I'd consider buying one. I'm still using an iPad Mini 2, which is working wonderfully still. So moving to an iPad Air 3, would be a nice upgrade.

I have two iPad Air2's. One with cellular and the other without. I use the cellular one all the time. I don't know what I'd do without it. If the iPad Air3 is going to be an improved version of the iPad Air 2, you bet I'll buy it!

If it has something really outstanding, I'll get one. If not, I'll get the current one at a discount.

I sold my 2012 iPad 3 when I moved recently and I was perfectly happy with its performance, so anything newer would be ok

Well, I'm running a nearly 5-year old iPad 2 (not Air 2) and I'm mostly satisfied.... It does seem to crash a lot (when opening a new website) and lags a fair bit but otherwise it's in perfect order. I don't have too many apps and try to keep only one or two open at a time. It plays a few games (the card games I like and plays movies perfectly.....) and browses the internet so it does what I want it to do. And it's paid for.

That said, yeah, I would consider the Air 3. I think Apple is smart to stop trying to update this device every few months and move to a longer refresh cycle.

My 2 is still surprisingly useful and with 9.2.1 it might be better than it has been in a while. It's in perfect physical shape so I have no desire to ashcan it yet.

If I'm not mistaken, only once has Apple updated an iPad in less than a year. A new iPad every few months was never a thing.

I've been waiting to buy an Air 3 for 9 months. I really hope it's released in March/April.

No. My iPad Air 2 is amazing and does everything I want it to do. In fact, it's unintentionally become a complete computer replacement for me. I barely use my rMBP anymore.

It should last me another year or two minimum.

Why on earth would they release two airs this year? That makes zero sense

What if people don't want the massive pro? Ram from 3 to 4 is hardly a deciding factor.

If air 3 has better speakers, more ram and has pencil support with a faster processor it will be a good upgrade
When has apple given anyone what they truly wanted in a upgrade. Common sense tells us all that the air 3 won't have pencil support, will remain with 2 gb of ram, include the a9 processor, a possible design refresh and a better screen. I hope no one is expecting more than that because if you are, you will have a rude awakening when this is announced.

Common sense tells me something different. It tells me that I don't know what the specifications of the iPad 3 will be. It seems perfectly plausible to me Apple could choose to include pencil support for the iPad 3. Or not! It's impossible to say as the ipad 3 is not out yet. Same goes for the other specs: 2GB ram, a9 procssor, etc.. We can speculate what those specs will be, but no one knows for sure at this point what Apple will do.

Some people only purchased the iPad pro because they wanted that pencil support..you think that Apple will give the only thing allowing the iPad pro to sell well to another device...when they are trying to compete against the Surface Pro 4; no way.....

What are you going to use that pencil for on an Air 3 ?
Mostly for drawing.

IPP is better for drawing, but it's way too large to be a general purpose iPad. For me anyway and for most people I believe. I carry a PC laptop and my iPad Mini 2 (plus battery charger and other assorted work stuff). A full sized iPad will fit and be better for some work-related activities. And, most importantly, it could fit in my laptop bag. An IPP will NOT fit and I have no interest in carrying a larger, heavier bag.

My Mini works well enough for my needs and the iPad Air 3 withOUT Apple Pencil does NOT provide enough added value for the cost. For drawing, the Mini is mediocre. But it's not the size that's the problem - it's the lack of a good drawing tool. I have several and the best is pretty mediocre - latency, offset issues, pressure sensitive issues, and overall functionality. Other people have used scribes like the Jot and Paper 53 to do some wonderful work. For me? They drive me nuts.

OTOH, the Apple Pencil is the best drawing instrument available based on all the reviews I've read and my personal experience in an Apple Store. Unlike current scribes, it let's you focus on the art and not fiddle with it. That's huge.

IPP way too big, but has Apple Pencil. Mini is small, but workable. But no Apple Pencil. iPad Air 3? It will be bigger and faster, but I don't see much added value there, especially for the money. Add Apple Pencil and it expands added value greatly for me. It's an immediate buy.

I suspect that a lot of people (like me) will buy the Air 3 because of the Pencil. OTOH, people who don't want the pencil don't have to buy one.

Dan.

They did this before.
They did it once to change release dates. The iPad 3 was a transition device so they didn't wait a year and a half to release a new tablet. If they released a new iPad Air in a couple of months, they might be going back to a spring release for the standard iPad.

Who is going to buy one in March when effectively Ipad Air 4 will probably come in October? We all remember iPad 3 and then Ipad 4.

Unless Apple start releasing the Air in March again yearly I would avoid. Given its probably just an Ipad Air with force touch and better cameras this is the Ipad kit worth buying.

Anybody who would upgrade is better going for a Pro as it has 4GB ram. Air 3 at best might have 3GB.

The iPad 3 and the iPad 4 was an extenuating circumstance. The Air3 will arrive in October .

The iPP2 will most likely be released Oct 2017. Pencil support won't come to the Air until 2017 at the earliest and it may come with a price increase of at least $100.

Of course, the Air3 will have a processor bump but RAM will be unchanged . And No, this will not be enough for Air2 users to upgrade, but Apple is hoping more ipad2, 3, and 4 owners will jump onboard.

It depends on what the upgrades are. My air 2 is still buttery smooth so I'd be happy to use it for another year. Unless the upgrades are significant I'm more likely to upgrade my mini 3 to the mini 4 than upgrade my air 2 to the air 3.

I can only imagine people who have something below an Air 1 (though, there are still those people who refuse to move on from iPad 2) or those who just have to have whatever is brand new will be all that interested in the Air 3. I suppose if I was due for an upgrade, I would probably go for it just for kicks...but my Air 2 is perfect and things like Force Touch, Pencil support, etc. just don't do it for me. My 53 Pencil works perfectly, my iPad doesn't need anymore RAM, and the display is awesome.

The iPad 2 is quite old now. Is it worth me "completing my iPad collection with the iPad 2/3 and Air 3?

I've purchased every iPad at release and currently am very happy with the Air 2. This time it depends on what new features the Air 3 has. My Air 2 meets my needs and has a great screen so I'm in no hurry to upgrade this time around.

I find it odd Apple has now "shown their hand" with the Pro, and now you're fully aware nothing is going in the Air 3 (or moving forward) that the Pro doesn't already have or is going to get.

There's no surprises coming for anything added to it. It's bizarre. It has now become "Oh, we tossed in 2 extra speakers and it's faster now like you expected."

I would buy iPad Air 3, but won't because of iOS. I own several iPads and I love them for what it is. But for me to upgrade, iOS needs to do more for iPad. I think it's time for iOS to be split into 2, phoneOS and padOS (joining 2 other iOS variants, tvOS and watchOS).

iOS 9 was a good start, but Apple needs to complete multitasking with:
  • Drag and drop between apps.
  • Mission Control view that shows currently running apps in zoomed out size.
  • Horizontal split view.
And furthermore:
  • Complete hardware keyboard support.
  • Better international keyboard layouts that match Mac's physical keyboard.
  • Pencil support on all new iPad models.
  • Smart Connector and Smart Keyboard for iPad Air 3.
  • Lightning to USB adapter, which should be updated to USB-C, should support wider range of accessories, such as external storage.

The problem with your proposition is that anything Apple can add to the iPad, they can easily add to the iPhone. It wouldn't make sense for them to add features to the iPad and then not also add them to the iPhone.
