If the rumor about the Smart Connector is true, maybe there will be a smaller version of the keyboard, too? I think this is much more likely than 3D Touch or pencil support and could give a massive sales push to the iPad

Wouldn't it be too small though - like old netbook size? Can't really touch type on those. Also if it looks as ugly as the iPad pro one I'd just stick to a Bluetooth keyboard and Smart Cover.

I think it could be still usable, but you're probably right. But what would be the main use of the Smart Connector then (if the rumor is true)?

oh it'd be for a keyboard - I just don't think it'd be very interesting for me :D

i will always prefer typing on a laptop (or even a smartphone) to an ipad. i don't personally want an added accessory that just makes it behave like the laptop i already have (with added gorilla arm whenever I want to move the cursor, etc).

i'll be super disappointed if the "feature" of the air 3 is another keyboard connector (when there's already a number of keyboard solutions for those who want them) and no pencil support.

well.. if they added all new features to Air3, it would be way too expensive and there wouldnt be anything left for air4. people would stay with air3 for a long time...

many didnt bought air2 because it didnt offer much for air owners and it killed all styluses. the reason i dont buy ipad pro is that it doesnt offer anything special for me (having air2). the pencil support isnt enough to get me buying pro. the gui is horrible, been playing with it... it feels cheap! a large tablet without an optimize os. i do like the idea, the size but again "pro" means only "bigger" rather than "for work".

They don't need to add all the new features but they will need to add some of them in order to differentiate the iPad Air 3 from it's predecessor. Also I'm pretty sure the iPad Air 2 has sold pretty well and has a number of updated features from the original iPad Air.

Logitech makes a keyboard case combo for the iPad Pro that uses the smart connector. I think it's a lot better then the official iPad Pro keyboard and they could make a smaller one for the iPad Air 3 if it also includes a smart connector.

It is much heavier though.

What is ?

The Logitech Keyboard

Yes I can attest, they make the iPad Pro as heavy or heavier than a 13" MacBook Pro, at which point I begin to wonder why I don't just use a 13" MacBook Pro....

You essentially trade portability for a fully functional keyboard... It's not really a tradeoff I want, but some people may really want to treat their iPad Pro as a laptop, so it makes sense for them.

I was so excited for the new iPad but leaks suggest that the dimensions will remain the same and it will be thicker. I was really hoping for an even lighter, thinner and with reduced bezels iPad. So i will probably stick with my mini 4.

Surely that is definitely a good thing by not making iPad Air 3 even thinner then it is now with the iPad Air 2 because if Apple did that again then it will be more likely be more serious problems like it will bend even more easily and distortions will happen more often and all so they going to have make the battery even smaller just like what they did with the iPad Air 2 which it is definitely bad!!

Yes I do agree being lighter, thinner and more portable is definitely a big welcome but being at 6.1mm the iPad Air 2 is already ridiculously thin enough and light enough and I don't really really think iPad should get even thinner then it is now with the iPad Air 2.

So why make it thinner where's at the same time the problems like bending and distortions will happen even a lot more often and making the battery even smaller so it won't last as long on a single charge???? I mean what is the BENEFIT of that come on????!!

Personally i am definitely glad and happy that the iPad Air 3 will be slightly thicker according to rumours so hopefully it will have a bigger battery even tho the battery life is fantastic on the iPad Air 2 but having even more battery life is definitely better and the best!!!! :) :)

Bending can be solved with the 7000 aluminium and i'm sure Apple has a solution for the vibrations by now. I understand people are saying the iPhone is thin&light enough, but the iPad can still lose a bit weight IMO :)

So does the iPad Air 2 have 6000 aluminium???? I don't really know....

What do you mean by the 7000 aluminium will solve the bending problem???? How do you know????

I thought making any any device especially tablets/phones thinner that it will bend more easily and all so the distortions will happen a lot more often.

Yes, the iPad Air 2 still has 6000 aluminium, and i never heard about bending problems with it. So the much more dense 7000 aluminium should allow quite a bit of thinning without any new problems.

As i said, i'm quite confident Apple will find a way to tackle that problem, but maybe you're right. In that case i'd still say it's worth it, but i could understand that others would rather have a thicker, heavier device with no vibrations.

The Logitech Keyboard

I guess that's the trade off. Either you get an OK keyboard which is lighter in the official one or one that is much better but heavier in the Logitech one. I've got the Logitech bluetooth keyboard for the iPad Air 2 which also acts as a cover and whilst it makes the iPad heavier it's not really noticeably so and adds a better alternative to the on screen keyboard. If I had a desktop Mac rather then a MacBook as my primary computer then I would certainly consider the iPad Pro along with the Logitech keyboard as my portable option. At least with the iPad Pro unlike a MacBook you can take or leave the keyboard. Also sometimes using a tablet on the go is more practical then a laptop.

The battery will most likely be smaller no matter what because they are adding the 4 speaker system. They might not be identical to the chamber with carbon fibre caps like in the Pro, but they will definitely take up more room than what's in the Air 2. The upgrade to an A9 allows them to make the battery smaller to fit the speakers but maintain the same battery life. Because the A9 is a lot more efficient. As we all know, Apple sets their sights on a specific battery life goal and as the A chips gets more efficient, they reduce the battery size to make room for other things all while maintaining their battery life goal.

Ok but what if the iPad Air 3 gets the A9X(instead of the A9) that is in the iPad Pro???? Which it is very likely, So Would it be different or the same????

It's such a frustrating dance that we are forced to endure.

Performance and features are going to be carefully restrained to keep the iPad pro attractive. And they tune their software so there is always a noticeable difference between their premier hardware vs older generations.

That makes the air 3 feel like it's going to barely make it half a year before the latest OS will make it start to show performance deficiencies.

I'll reiterate, if the main upgrades are speakers (seriously if you really care about audio, onboard speaker upgrades are just shades of crappy), camera (ugh, really?), and the privilege of more keyboard accessories... I just don't know what Apple is doing anymore and I don't think they have any real vision for the iPad.

I hope I'm wrong. :(

A9X is a very fast SOC though?

a8x is very fast too, but if they want to drive sales they're going to want to demonstrate that users still need more. But they will also want to demonstrate the benefits of stepping up to the pro, so there've laid out some clear performance boundaries. Air 3 is going to release with performance between a device released 18 months ago and another device released 6 months ago.

No.

Btw my 5S is faster than ever on the latest 9.3 beta

They will clock the A9(X) as high as possible while maintaining battery life. Which will probably be a bit lower than on the Pro, which has a bigger battery. No conspiracy here

Yeah but the device released 6 months ago also costs a lot more than what the Air 3 will!

i'm just very wary. my ipad 3 got outclassed by the OS very quickly. i don't even have an issue with its native performance, but it became a sub-par OS experience barely a year after its release. likewise my iphone 6 was a weak performance upgrade over the 5s, and it has started showing performance issues already.

the only thing that'd tempt me to update is its potential as a drawing tablet. but based on how core functionality like typing seems to be easily compromised by updates, i'm afraid that it'll rapidly become too laggy to use for drawing unless i never update and pray i never have to restore. which is fine because apple devices never get glitchy requiring a restore.

edit: as a note, i *want* to want this tablet. i'm just so scared that its longevity is going to be compromised by apple trying to strategize faster hardware turnover to pump sales.
