I have a PowerMac G5 1,8 dual, with ATI 128MB Radeon 9800Pro.
Dells homepage says the ATI 128MB Radeon 9800Pro needs driver update to work with the 2405FPW, but there is no driver update for macosx on their site. Will it work anyway?

Yes, it will. The Windows drivers for that card didn't support the correct resolution (1920x1200) out of the box. The Mac drivers built into OS X do. It'll work just fine =]

Has anyone tried the component input? How good is it? I'm thinking about getting this LCD and hooking it up to my mac mini, pc, and x-box/gamecube.

An xbox hooked up to the component input is absolutely awe inspiring. There is a 'source' button on the front of the LCD that allows you to quickly switch inputs, so thats effortless. And games running in 480p/16:9 look fantastic. I'm actually MORE impressed with its performance as an xbox screen than a monitor for my PC :)

Anyone using one of these with a Mini? Surely the std GPU isn't up to driving a screen at this res?

Cheers,
Adam

The Mac mini's gpu is up to the task. Take a look at clayjohanson's setup and explanation. His mini is driving a 23" Sony LCD of the same resolution as the Dell 2405.

thanks! I'm buying it

Yeah I have no idea why you'd think it wouldn't work with the Mini. I use my 2405W with my Mini and it's phenomenal.

I've found that the card reader is a little unreliable on my 2405. But other than that, its fantastic.

Has anyone else had this issue?

D

I have one.

I just got mine last week and it looks great. I have a 1st version G4 though and it doenst have DVI. The VGA resolution only goes to 1600 x whatever. So if you dont have DVI, you wont get the high resolution from the VGA.

Size is awesome. Price was $968 on ebay. No complaints here. I just have to get a new mac with dvi.

Not yet, but so far I've only been using it in linux (my Mac Mini gets here tomorrow!). Could it be a software/OS issue ? In what way was it unreliable ?

Can somebody comment on the color reproduction quality, view angle and such?

I have a 20" plastic ACD, but I'd love to upgrade to this Dell. I just want to be sure that the colors are as good as the ACD.

I have a Dell 1901 at work, but I don't really like the colors it produces, and the viewing angle is worse than in the specs..

The viewing angle is fine to me. 170 degrees I think. You wont have a problem displaying anything to 5 or more people. It can be tilted in all directions. The color pretty much matched my CRT. The highest res that I got from VGA is 1600. With DVI I would be able to max it. I'll try the card reader later. I highly suggest purchasing this monitor over others. Perfect size for a desktop. Video looks great.

Thanks for your reply. I have a more specific question if you don't mind, do the colors and brightness change when looking at it from say a 45 degrees angle? Left, right, up, down. The reason I ask this is because I've seen this on some lcd panels, it's something my 20" ACD doesn't have and I'm really happy with that. I also need to show color/brightness sensitive stuff to clients sometimes.
Thanks!

Brightness and color

No, they dont change. It would be hard to notice a change since the monitor is so big. You would have to stand up in order to notice a change, but NO, there is no changes in color or brightness on the monitor from simply looking at it. Other than totally on its side which you wouldnt do anyway.

Go and buy this if your thinking of it. I did get a max resolution on my PC with it at 1920 x 1200 with VGA. So that means that my old G4 graphics card cant seem to produce the res needed in VGA mode. 1600 is as high as I can get it. Anything newer than 1st version G4's should be able to max this out.

You WILL need to have it on a high resolution though. The monitor isnt good at all under 1600 resolution. Make sure that you can max it out. I am very happy with this purchase.

DVI

How about 1600 X 1200 on DVI?

This is the only WS image my 8500 can produce on my PC.

To be replaced by a Dual G5 next year.

With DVI you will have no problems. 1600 x 1200 will look very nice and crisp. VGA mode is also good at 1600+ resolution, but not lower than that.

It kept giving me errors reading the cards...and asked if I wanted to format, ignore or eject. Formating through the card reader it recognized my 1 gig flash card as an 8 gig card (that'd be really nice :D).

I bought a small card reader (lexar, same as the cards I was using) and it work perfectly. I needed a portable one any way for my powerbook.

And I used a couple different cards with the same results, and after a visit to the Dell support site, found nothing for a fix. Maybe they're going to get one eventually, but its not a big deal.

The same thing happened when I plugged my iShuffle into the monitor. Not a big deal, but it would be nice if there was a fix for it....

Dell 24" LCD Pricing...

amoildani said:
any signs of a price?

I am a major Dell reseller along with most other manufacturers.
List on these will be $1199.00 + Shipping and tax.
I can sell them for about $1060 and make a few bucks.

My main concern is that they will work with no issues with my new DP 2GHZ G5 and it's 9800XT DVI Video card?
