I will also be keeping the AppleTV. Airplay/airplay mirroring is unmatched by the competition. I also have a Roku, but the AppleTV is used on nearly a daily basis while the Roku sees use about once a week or sometimes less.

I should mention that I have ATVFlash on my AppleTV(2s), but even without being jailbroken, I prefer the ATV.

This isn't to say that the Fire isn't a fine device. However, I currently don't have a need for it.

No. It's not available here anyway. However I'd only get it to use alongside my Apple TV. The only thing it offers me over the apple TV is gaming, but then the selection of games pales in comparison to the app store.

This will drive people away from the Amazon Fire TV. I don't think Gary Busey was the wisest choice.

Boy did amazon screw this up. I don't know about you guys but I think gary was either stoned or drunk on that comercial. What a way to trash a promising product.

Not dumping my ATV simply because of the huge investment I have in the content and also the simplicity of the system. However, I am adding the Amazon FireTV since I am a Prime member and I have been wanting to take advantage of Amazon's Prime library in a simpler way rather than through my Smart TV or iOS device.

I'm still exploring it, and so far, so good. Good machine but not as 'simple' as the ATV. Definitely not going to replace my ATV. I wonder what Apps are in the works and also games that will be coming in the future.

And oh, one thing I've become spoiled with is the Voice Search. That thing is so damn accurate and EASY! I wish ATV had that.

I have little interest in Fire TV, but I thought the commercial was absolutely hilarious! Especially at the end where he screams "YEEEAAAHHHH!!!"

Gary Busey is a known nutcase. It would be odd if he DIDN'T seem stoned or drunk.

I dumped my ATV (which I received for a gift) and went back to an old ROKU. The Amazon Fire TV looks like it would be fine also for what I need at least if it gets plugins. The ATV is too tied into the Apple eco-system. I want Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex primarily.

Airplay of Prime and Plex work well. I gave away a Roku 3 because I wanted Airplay and the Apple ecosystem. The ATV has better quality video streaming too,

I find Amazon's prices cheaper for most shows I'm interested in. That is their price for the DVD/Blu-Ray version is often lower than the iTunes price.

Now if Amazon started giving away free digital copies (I know they do Ultraviolet - but that's an entirely different story) with the "physical" purchase of discs from their store then I would switch over in a millisecond.

Basically the question would be whether you'd want to pay more for just a digital copy (iTunes) than a digital copy (Amazon) combined with the original packaged version (DVD/Blu-Ray). No brainer this one.

I agree I've been comparing both streaming video and Netflix using both the roku 3 and a Samsung Blu Ray player and without a doubt the ATV 3 has the best image of the bunch, its sharp and clear, Netflix looks a lot better.

None of the current boxes compares to using an HTPC. HTPC *spanks* them all.

Except for a common user interface.

Plex
Hulu
Amazon
Hulu
Others I can not think of off of the top of my head

Yes Plex has channels for some of those but they are less than usable at times.

Hulu- XBMC addon. Works flawlessly and has the option to remove commercials (this feature isn't available anywhere else).
Amazon- Official Windows Media Center app
You said Hulu twice. 🙂
Netflix- Windows 8 Metro app

I guess I get what you are saying if you just want a simple box that has everything in one place just get an apple tv or whatever. If you want to do all that and more get a HTPC. Nothing is better for organizing and playing back your local files than XBMC IMO. Plus I can use madVR for better picture quality.

I love how FTV lets you side load apps. I have 3 ATVs. 2 hacked with XBMC. As long as I have to run Itunes I will not be buying another ATV. Once the bugs are worked out I will be buying a FTV. Most of my content is stored locally. I don't have much use for airplay because I don't store content on my I devices.

You don't have to store anything on you device to be able to use airplay. Where did you get that from ?

All my content is stored on a NAS and I can still airplay it either from an idevice or my mac.

Give it a few years and Amazon will be king. They are already selling most stuff in physical form (DVDs, Blu-Ray, etc.) cheaper than iTunes is with its download-only setup.

And if Samsung and Amazon were ever to merge then their market share would be so huge that everyone else would simply be fighting for leftover scraps... 🙂

Anyway, will be interesting to see what Apple has in store for us with the next Apple TV. Personally I miss the notion of having storage space in the device and having to store everything on my MacBook or external drives hooked up to it. Would be nice to be able to store content directly on the Apple TV or at least hook up external storage cards/drives to the box itself.

Yes, as long as Itunes is running and then it takes forever for the device to load the shared library. The best thing I like about ATV is the ability to shuffle songs and videos together which I cannot not do with XBMC. I've tried with a mixed playlist but I haven't had any success.
