Buying the 256gb version as my secondary machine (also have iMac 21.5 2012)

I had a 13inch MBA but ended up selling it since it was much heavier for me. My backpack is always filled with books, food and a big water bottle and I carry my back pack all day long!! so this rMB is perfect for me, smaller, lighter and thinner.

When I had the MBA, I used to keep it at home because how big and heavie my backpack used to be so I always brought my iPad...but iPad isn't good for word processing and few things that I couldn't do on it...

rMB is honestly prefect for me, it has a retina display (which I'm in love with). All I need this SECONDARY machine to do is surf the web, word processing, iTunes, photo management (no editing)..so core M is enough for me.

I REALLY want the new MacBook but I do edit photos in Lighroom, audio in Audition and the occasional Photoshop. Think it would be able to handle it?

I have been reading an awful lot of reviews and still can't decide.

I have a mid-2010 13'' MBP with a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo and want to replace it. I am a PhD student and in a year I will probably be living abroad so portability is key. However, I don't think that the rMBP is that bulky or anything.

I actually prefer having one USB-C port than having all those ports on the rMBP, and the Macbook is actually cheaper because if I buy the rMBP I will have to buy the 256 Gb version instead of the cheapest one.

I use my Mac to write articles, Keynote presentations, and as an enthusiast photographer I use a lot of Lightroom to edit RAW photographs taken with my Canon 7D. I would also like to play the ocasional game.

The ONLY thing that is currently concerning me is this: many times I hoped I had a bigger screen, and the Macbook is even smaller than my MBP. So I am worried about decreasing my screen by an inch. So I would say I'm probably 50-50 between the Macbook (Space Grey) or the new rMBP with 256 Gb of storage space.

Who's planning to buy one and why?

I think with the work you're doing, I suggest that you go with a MacBook Pro. Also because I'm guessing you use flash drives and such?

i am thinking about replacing a MBA, but i will wait until i read user experience after the 10´th of april. Also if the performance on the macbook is a downgrade compared to my current MBA (1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 8GB ram 128 sad) i will skip it.. even-though i really need a larger SSD.

Has any one seen an actual benchmark test of the new macbook?
please post a link.

All of my stuff is pretty much stored in the cloud. Lightroom is something I use every week and I'm about to start using Audition to edit audio for a podcast. I just don't know how heavy that stuff actually would be on this.

I'm not in the market for another device right now - but if i was i'd certainly consider one. I can't in all honest say "yes" i'd get one for sure as I've not physically see it, or used the new keyboard/trackpad.

This really looks like it was designed for Skylake SOC. Very tempting but I've bought enough Mac's to realize when one should buy and one should wait. A lot of new tech being introduced in this machine which will show up in the other machines and this Macbook will come down in price significantly a year from now.

It's the lightest laptop around.
It's the thinnest laptop around.
It's the most beautiful laptop around.

So... mainly because of the design and ultimate portability. I love that little thing.

And I love being early adopter. I like the idea of using and testing out the latest piece of technology. Thats just how I am.

I use mostly Bluetooth peripherals so connectivity won't be issue for me.

I'm currently on a late 2012 15" rMBP (16ram/500hd/2.7 i7) and im definitely moving to the 12 MBr. When I got the rMBP i was finishing architecture school and I needed as much power as possible on my personal computer to complete school work with rendering and drawing. Not that I'm done with school anywhere you work they'll provide you with a decent machine to work on, so my personal one hardly even sees any intensive work. Every now and then I'll render something, do a little photo editing and play some games, but overall it's mostly to surf web and handle personal data like emails, web browsing, office, and other stuff. So if I sell now I can pretty much get the higher MBr model with just a few extra bucks. ;)

That's the plan at least.

Oh and my choice would be grey.

PS: Before having the 15" I'd always had 13" and I always missed the ease of portability and comfort of a smaller notebook so I don't expect that to be a problem either. I've heard a few people say they'd never to down on screen size, and while on a phone it does make a huge difference, on a laptop not so much, IMO.

I'm planning on swapping my 2013 13" Air for a 512GB SSD, 1.3 GHz version.

Additional portability plus the retina display are big factors for me. My laptop is used mainly for school work. I also have a 21.5" iMac at home for more strenuous things.

I will almost certainly get one, can't decide which build I want.

Much like iPads, I'll probably do an annual upgrade, and sell the older one (or give to less fortunate family members, heh).

I fully expect a very different laptop line from Apple by end of 2016, so who knows what my next machine after this will be.

Maybe a 14" Retina MacBook?

Maybe a 13" Retina MacBook Pro (redesigned to be between the current 13" Air and 13" MBP in terms of dimensions and weight)?

But right now I have a heavy duty raging over-clocked Win 7 desktop machine I built, and a 15" rMBP from a few years back. The 12" rMB will be my travel machine, and I can't wait!

I would have very low expectations for RAW editing in Lightroom and anything too complex other than BASIC editing in Audition on this machine.

I'm planning to try it out. Doubt I'll notice the 0.35 lbs weight reduction over the regular Air (about the weight of an iPhone...) but I'll probably enjoy the IPS display it has and wish the more powerful Air had gotten it instead. Then I will probably be bothered that I can't use it with an external monitor or charge my phone with it and return it to Apple.

I'm getting one. Why? Because i worked for my money and have no problem buyong every apple product to use or atleast play with.

Going to go 512gb ssd in space grey.

Same here. I love my 15" rMBP but this will be a fun product to try out and use for word processing, browsing, grading, light research, etc. I'm getting the base model though. I guess I don't work for as much money :D.

I won't be buying on the day that's for sure. I need to try it out for myself in-store and read the reviews, I hope to have my mind made up by the end of April - hope that's enough time! :D

I'm still really happy with my 2011 MBA, but I'm tempted. The larger and better screen, the better battery, the reduced weight. It's all very tempting, but for the price.

I'll have a look in store, but I'll probably wait for v 2 next year.

V2 of the mba came 2-3 years later...

Go for the space. It's just a few hundred bucks.

Very true.

Am I right in remembering that when it did it had more ports?

Thats correct. However, I dont need/want more ports. The only thing I use ports for at this time is charging my iPhone/iPad....which means im not using ports for data transfer like I was in 2008.

I need to type on that keyboard before I consider upgrading from my (awesome) MBA 13 inch mid 2011.

I guess I would have to stomach a smaller screen too.

If it was 13 or 14 inch, two USB C ports (or one and a standard USB port) and a keyboard with more travel, I would be pre-ordering the Space Grey in a heartbeat.

This one not for me, but I'm sure it will find it's market and have success. Sexiest laptop ever made.

Yes

I will definitely buy one. I was one of the people hoping they will release the 12" model with this event and am happy they did.

Will be switching from the first unibody, the 2008 Macbook, which to this day works solidly and on the latest software. Upgraded the memory from 2GB to 8GB and 80GB HDD to 1TB over the years. The Cd drive stopped functioning like on cue when apple stopped shipping with CD drive. From Macbook 2008 to Macbook 2015.

The new Macbook suits my needs perfectly, light consumption machine and not creation. I have a mac mini for such purposes, including storage of photos and videos. Over the last couple of years I've consolidated my files/photos/videos on a central server (mac mini) running headless, to be accessed via consumption devices like the Macbook Air or the new Macbook. I'm looking forward to the new Macbook.

My favorite Apple product was the 12" PowerBook. I used that laptop to death.

The MacBook Air was a horrible sequel.

The New 12" MacBook is everything I always wanted the spiritual successor to the 12" PowerBook to be. Well, I still wanted an auto-stereoscopic screen. ;)
