Just upgraded my launch day 14" MBP M1 Pro to a 16" M4 Pro. It was more that I wanted a 16" but the M4 Pro is noticeably faster at many tasks, plus better battery life, 24GB of RAM, better speakers, quantum dot screen. Quite happy with this upgrade.

I bought that original MBP for ~ $1900 USD when it came out, and this one for $2600 CAD, so actually almost the same price!

I am jealous.

Congratulations on a terrific MacBook!

It is a heavy beast, the 16" but probably the best built MacBook I ever had the pleasure of ownership. I had an m1 max 16" MBP but I couldn't handle the weight.

I have a M2 MBA now but I really want a M4 or M5 when released MBP but I think I will get the 14".

I honestly don't think there is a better laptop available.

M1 Max MBP 16" 64GB RAM 4TB SSD is my "desktop" machine connected to a 57" monitor plus bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Too heavy to travel. I would like a lot more RAM. Hope the M5 Max (MBP format) or Ultra (Studio format) will be available with more RAM than what the M4s (resp. M3s) had. Then I think it's definitely worth upgrading.

Thanks! I find that the 16 is better bang-for-pound than the 14. I’ve been a digital nomad for the last 4 years, and for me, I don’t really see that much difference travelling with the 16 vs 14.

Yes it’s 600 g heavier, but that’s not all that much in the grand scheme of things. I used to travel with a full frame camera and two or three lenses, so that was an extra 3 kg I’m not taking anymore.

Wouldn’t you be better served with a Mac Studio or mini?

Once you get used to a 13.6" MBA it is hard to go up that much weight. The MBA has been a game changer partly due to the lack of fans, light weight, I use it so much that my iPad is almost redundant because the MBA for me, just works better.

Since my use is not heavy more medium use in terms of cpu utilization so I don't require the pro model. Luckily the pro models use fans sparingly so it isn't a big issue but the portability is hard to beat. However, the 14" isn't that much heavier but you get a much better screen and speakers and longer battery life although that is not an issue on the MBA.

That is just my BS I am thinking about.

When I had the 16" it was so nice I almost felt bad using such a nice machine. The detail in design, the performance and that screen was the nicest screen on a laptop I have ever used despite some issues. I wish Apple would develop micro led screens rather than OLED. But I am sure your m4 MBP is an amazing laptop and I hope you enjoy it for as long as you desire.

Apple Silicon first came out late 2020.
My MacBook Pro M1 Max was released in 2021.
Did Mac Mini ever get the Max processor?
Later, Mac Studio first came out in 2022.
My problem exactly. I had purchased a Mac mini “fully loaded” but it couldn’t keep up with my needs. I bit the bullet when Apple announced the MBPro as they were the only Pro/Max chips available and so I dove in to replace the mini. Perfect! Except that four months later Apple releases those wonderful Studios…

My MBPro will be removed from desktop duty next year when I get an M5 generation Studio as my daily driver. It will then become an actual laptop, maybe. Or a shelf dweller, on call for backup…

I have an M1 Pro 16 and, while the screen is great, it's quite the chungus to carry around. I bought a 14 inch Windows laptop which is thin and light and is comparable in performance to the M1 Pro 16. I was thinking of selling the M1 Pro 16 and considering an M4, 5, 6 Air 13 or, better yet, a 10 inch MacBook.

I just use my M1 14" as a daily driver. I haven't tried anything else. For me it's internet, multimedia (plex/youtube/netflix) and really that's about it. Have to admit I've been looking for a reason to upgrade and can't. I even have a $600 credit with apple and can't find a reason to get rid of the thing. I can't tell if I'm just old now and not longer always needing the new new or what. How is yours treating you or if you've traded in how's the new unit. Was it worth it or no real reason to upgrade?
Purchased April 2022.

My 16' MBP M1 Max (64GB / 4TB) is the best laptop I've ever owned and continues to be more than anything I've ever needed computationally. I run Parallels with W11 doing Visual Studio 2022 builds (C# / Oracle stuff) doing the week and game sometimes during the evening (Starcraft / World of Warcraft Classic / Age of Empires (Crossover)).

Daily driver is M1 Studo Base Max. Still doing great, and I have no desire to upgrade.

Ignore the marketing BS. If you need more horsepower based on Activity Monitor stats and memory pressure, then go for it.
Same here - love my 2022 Studio Base Max - use it every day.

Will use it till the "wheels fall off"...

32GB of RAM never slows me down with over 50 tabs open, dual 27" displays and DAC sound system.

The M1 Max is the craziest chip I've ever (and continue to) used. And I don't see that changing anytime soon lol.

I also have a Pro M3 14" MBP with 18 GB RAM, 12 CPU / 18 GPU that runs neck and neck with the Studio in most things for me.

Studio has long-term sustained GPU punch and at times, better storage throughput performance plus more cooling capacity (less likely to heat up and kick in throttling).

M3 Pro has more headroom and future codec/medial engine (ProRes, HEVC, HDR workflows) support.

I have never heard the fans turn on my Studio.

Always heard it with the Mac Mini which was annoying....

My first personal Mac is this M1 MacBook Air I bought right after launching. 8GB RAM/512GB SSD

Working fine for me so far, although some stuff started to stutter after Tahoe upgrade. I hope some bugfix release improves this.

I am still rocking the last Intel MBP 13”, which was released in 2020. Not too long before the M1 launch. The way this machine is performing it’ll be another few years until I need to move to the M-series.

Me.. M1 Max 32gb. It's fast enough for me and new macbook prices have really exploded.

I'll prob look to buy when I see the following:
- At least 2x single core speed vs m1 max (GB6: M4=4054, M1=2371), so M5 should hit the doubling number
- Want to see what custom AI hardware may get into the SoC
- Really praying that RAM and SSD upgrade prices get more affordable but doubt it will happen. 1TB is just too tight really want to be able to afford 2TB/64gb. (currently 1TB/32gb). I might compromise with less RAM though like 36-48gb.
- Would like to see some weight reduction in the 16" models where possible

I'm perfectly happy with Mini-led vs OLED. Cellular esim could be cool but don't really need it.

You may be on borrowed time. If memory serves me right, that was the last line of Intel releases. And looking at the trends for OS support, you're looking at a 7-year support cycle for the OS, meaning that whatever MacOS is released in 2027 will be the last Intel-supported OS.

Bought a M1 iMac about a year and a half ago and will run it as long as I get updates. It’s a base unit and I’m very happy with it for my use, which admittedly is very basic. I’m very happy how it syncs with my iPad and iPhone for a seamless ecosystem.

Apple announced that macOS 26 is the last update that will support Intel Macs, so Intel Macs will only receive 1 more year of feature updates.

Already, some macOS features don't work on Intel Macs. Anything involving Apple Intelligence or Live Transcription or AI-based edits in Photos etc.
