using an M1 mini 8GB/256 here, in combination with a simple USB3 4tb harddrive. Using it mainly for DaVinci resolve projects.
In theory, it doesn't have enough RAM. And in theory, the external drive is too slow to serve the video files.
The "theory" part here is the issue :) it simply works fine.
I also have an M1 iPad which is far too overpowered for an iPad.

Fortunately, the Bumble-Bee does worry about theory either

I have the same Mac, and I totally agree. I’ve been told by others in this forum that “8GB RAM isn’t enough for even basic use-cases”, and yet I can run Blender, run my professional graphic design software, emulate Windows games, and many other resource intensive processes without issue. The base-spec M1 is still solid. 👍🏻

know this post might get some push back.

I am actually pretty happy with the Liquid Glass update. It isn't perfect but I feel like my M2 MBA is a new Mac again.

My MacBook is over 3 years old and I am pretty amazed with how well it performs. I am impatient and as soon as a device starts lagging I am looking how I can replace it. Every laptop I have ever owned dramatically starts slowing down after 3 years. I am not saying my M2 is a speed demon but it hasn't showed its age yet.

I really hope the performance stays as good as it is now for many more years.

My all time favorite laptop has to be these new MBA. I also think for the Pro models they are the best laptops Apple has ever made. I am pretty hard to criticize and since the redesigned MBP and MBA have really addressed most of the problems I had with Mac's previously. I have had some really nice Windows laptops with superior hardware compared to my MacBook yet I find I use my MacBook the most. There is just something about the design, keyboard, and screen I just love.

My MacBook is an M1 MBA with 16 Gigs RAM and 512 Gigs storage. I bought it in late 2020 when they came out. It still feels like new. It looks fantastic and everything still works as it should. It performs solidly. These MBAs are great little machines.

I have the same configuration (and color :)) and i'm very satisfied so far.
But with the latest update on tahoe it seems to be a little slower. What OS are you running?

I haven’t updated to Tahoe yet. It’s on my todo list for this weekend, though. Will be interested to see how it goes.

You may be on borrowed time. If memory serves me right, that was the last line of Intel releases. And looking at the trends for OS support, you're looking at a 7-year support cycle for the OS, meaning that whatever MacOS is released in 2027 will be the last Intel-supported OS.

Oh, that’s okay. It’s not like the machine will stop working after the updates stop being supported. I still use my 2011 11” MBA which is stuck on High Sierra, I think. Outside of the tiny 4GB ram, it’s good for light use.

I have an M1 Mini and an M4 MacBook Air. The M1 is still a great chip! I can not tell too much a difference outside of Tahoe loading a second or two faster.

That's how I am with my mid-2011 13" MBA. High Sierra was too unstable and buggy for me, but is absolutely a tank on Sierra. I pull it out when I need to, but for it being a 14 year old laptop, it is a warhorse.

MBP M1 Max here: it's fast, silent (!) and reliable, and I feel no need to upgrade (yet). It's the heart of my studio. What I'm wishing for in a next upgrade is a whole bunch of Thunderbolt 5 ports. The three ports on the MacBook Pro are simply not enough, so I'm leaning towards an M6 Mac Studio in about 2-3 years.
Have a M1 16" MacBook Pro 32GB and 2TB SSD. Works great. Best computer I have every had (and have had MANY).

I do video work and it does the job. I am holding off for the M6. I WANT a M3 Ultra Mac Studio...but...just WANT for faster output.

But..want my M1 gem to last as long as it can.... NO need to update, but only considering updating because I WANT too (or have the funds).

After YEARS of dealing with intel...Apple should give us a break and allow the M1 to continue for some years before doing something (like maybe what is happening in macOS Tahoe now with the M1's) to force upgrading...

I there a way to bypass login on both M1 MacBook and Mac mini with Tahoe?
every option is grey and yes these are my computers I paid for..... not tim cook!

after I bypass log in I can really ROCK both M1 MacBook and Mac mini

With Tahoe!

thanks in advance!

Log in is only once after booting up, after that you keep your finger on the power button to unlock... that's not a lot of effort before you can ROCK 😄

Thanks, or if I turn off the file vault......which Tahoe turned on all by it's "whittle-bitty" self!
I will see if that works after my road bike ride this morning.

BTW: using the power button elongated on the mini is not fun!

EDIT UPDATE:
I still need to log in....

My  watch won't pair after 2 hours of who knows what
My  iPhone wont play music as 2023, plays an album form yesterday.
My Macs won't auto boot....yried and tried
My  home kits really sucks!
my TV is annoying for speaker source.
my iPad is okay but won't block porn sites pop ups from legit web pages.
perhaps  just sucks if you want to use  products they way you want.

see everyone on MacRunors in October with my MacBook Air 201O running Mt Lion!

i know... and i still have one really important piece of software that is still x86-64. worried that apple might end rosetta2 but we're good for another 2 years at least i think.
I've been thinking the same thing. But also, If Tahoe was the last update my M1 MBP got, I'd be ok with it? And that would mean keeping Rosetta2, too. I wonder if they'll still keep it around for when they dump Intel all together in macOS 27?

Just got an M4 MBA from work, but I'm still using my M1 MBA with 16GB RAM at home.

Performance wise I can't really tell a difference in day-to-day use (Office tasks).

The M4 does have a much better FaceTime camera, a slightly larger screen (it's noticeable), and feels a tiny bit lighter. The chassis, however, does feel a bit hollow if that makes sense.

The old style M1 MBA has much better speakers (the M4 was a bit of a disappointment in this regard) and feels more premium to me.

Sometimes we're always chasing the latest and greatest (makes sense, this is a tech forum after all), but the M1 is still amazing - whether you're using an MBA, MBP or something else.

It may be closer. Apple announced that Tahoe was the last OS to support Intel Macs, so it would make sense that next year's MacOS release would end Rosetta 2 support.

If and when I do upgrade, it will be for the 15" MBA. I do want the larger screen, but seeing how my M1 MBA is still going strong, part of me just wants to hold on to it for as long as I can and see how far the machine can go.

I hope they keep Rosetta 2 as it is useful for current and older programs.

I understand that Apple wants developers and companies to update, but the reality is that some don't. Also, some (major companies) want everyone to move to subscriptions for newer updated apps.

But..understand that developers and companies are creating apps for profit (and that is ok of course and not everything should be free), but SOME of the apps that have moved to subscription are terrible and their older apps are better and work better (like Adobe Elements).

AND...companies are not updating their apps ON PURPOSE Adobe especially) in order for users to buy their "latest and greatest", but their "latest and greatest" is not so great. Adobe wants everyone on subscription and their stand-a-lone apps are created so with every OS going forward you have to update. Wasn't like that before, but noticed over the last few years.

Not all of course, but especially Adobe..and a few others (not small developers).

Rosetta 2 unless it is a pain for Apple to update each OS is a service to us Customers and hopefully they will continue.
