I don't know.. in my opinion it doesn't make sense. Obviously the Air 2 is better than the Air but if I had the Air I wouldn't have upgraded to the Air 2. I won't go from Air 2 to Air 3, it just doesn't make sense in terms of getting value out of purchase.

So who is going to skip the Air 3 and keep their Air 2?
Your headline is baffling: "Who's skipping the Air 3 and keeping their Air 2?".

The wording implies that upgrading every year is the norm? I think that's actually far from the norm.

It's like asking: "Who's skipping a new wife/girlfriend this Valentine's day and keeping the old wife/girlfriend?" :p

(of course, maybe I'm just old and can't stand yearly upheavals in my digital life?)

It's a tricky one. The one aspect I like most about the Pro are those 4 speakers.

However, I bought a 128GB refurbished Air 2 last year. The price of the Air 3 will be a lot higher at launch. I'd have to downgrade to 64GB storage.

It's really only those 4 speakers that pique my interest amongst all the rumoured upgrades the Air 3 will be getting. Sure, the inner geek inside me loves fast processors but the updates to iOS 9 have really helped the Air 2 feel plenty fast already.

Not interested at all in Pencil and Smart Connector.

I'm definitely skipping the Air 3. My last iPad before the Air 2 was iPad 3 so I tend to like to let iPads stretch. iPad Air 2 is also the first iPad to get 2GB Ram. That, combined with the amount of time it's taking for a new one to come out, leads me to believe this hardware will be relevant for a fairly long period of time.

I think that this question gets to the heart of why iPad sales are generally not setting the world on fire. An old iPad is still a great product! I get every new model of iPhone but I skip a generation or two of iPads. I still have an original iPad mini that is great for what I use it for. I will plan on staying with iPad Air 2.

I don't really understand this whole Apple pencil hype... What exactly can do? What are the use cases?
Well the pencil is excellent, it feels just like a real pencil or pen from what I've seen from using it in the store. For people who like drawing, it really changes the game. It also makes it easy to annotate PDFs or take handwritten notes, or do math.

I no longer take notes on paper. The pencil is that good.

This!

I tried to do this a couple years back. Lasted for a month or 2 but was soooooo frustrating and clumsy. Now, with notability and the Pencil it's as fast, efficient and natural as pen and paper.
Note pads, either writing or doodling, is my life. These days, i literally spend my working days with my Pencil in my hand

I have an iPad 3. It runs terribly on the latest OS but still the only thing that could motivate an update is a fundamental expansion of the iPads utility. For me that would be pencil support, but it sounds like speakers and camera flashes are what's on deck this round, and I already have better solutions than an iPad can offer built in.

I have and LOVE my Air 2 - Have had it since it came out basically...

But I spent about 2 hours at the Apple Store enjoying the Pencil + iPP

If iPad Air 3 supports the Pencil, I'm ALL in....asap.

The iPP I had at home and returned...just too big, but the Pencil action I'm all over and would love to have and use on an 9.7" size.

I had the same opinion as you....and then I tried one in store....Amazing...

I did try one, I mean it works fine, don't get me wrong, but apart from drawing what's the use case?

So who is going to skip the Air 3 and keep their Air 2? I recently upgraded to the Air 2 from the air 1 and I really enjoy it. So thin and super light, the screen is amazing, and I love reading textbooks, browsing the web, watching NHL, playing games, etc. on this thing, it is truly a wonderful device and I don't see the need to upgrade anytime soon. The upgraded speakers and cam don't interest me, and the Air 2 is so plenty fast I don't see the need for a processor upgrade either. Who else feels the same way and will be keeping their Air 2 for a while and skipping the air 3?

I have a iPad Air 2 and only had it for a couple months since September last year 2015 and am very happy with it.

So I will be skipping the iPad Air 3 as I have the iPad Air 2 it is so powerful and 2GB of RAM is plenty enough and lots of apps/games are still NOT taking advantage of the power of the A8X chip and I am very very happy with the Air 2 especially with IOS 9. :)

And I think the iPad Air 3 won't be much of a upgrade from the iPad Air 2...
I most probably will wait for the iPad Air 4 or 5 which it will definitely be more of a upgrade then the Air 3 and that's where I think I will upgrade my iPad. :)

I am looking to use my iPad Air 2(bought it and have been using it since September 2015) for a least 2/3 years before I upgrade.

That and note taking/marking up PDF's...

You have to remember that you're dismissing "drawing" a little bit - There are a LOT of people with interest in that use case and nothing has ever done it as well as the Apple Pencil does it currently...depending upon which App you're using I noticed.

I agree, got mine in September and hopefully will use it for a while. A great device.

I'd consider selling my Pro and get an Air if it has Pencil support, but otherwise I'll just keep my Pro.

This is totally not getting Pencil support just because of all of the people who will only upgrade for it, just seems that's the way Apple works.

Because it is your opinion that it is a "stupid" move. There is no compelling reason why Apple would withhold support for the Pencil from other iPads. Of course there is an argument that claims that the Pencil needs to be exclusive to the iPad Pro in order to provide incentive to buy the iPP. The implication is that absent the Pencil there is no reason to buy the Pro. That too is opinion and quite a simplistic one at that. Simply being a larger iPad in and of itself is reason for some/many to buy one.

Apple may limit support for the Pencil for now... but we won't know (unless Apple states it) what the reason for that decision is. It could easily be for exclusivity for the Pro. It could just as easily be Apple's inability to manufacture the Pencil in large enough quantities to meet the demand that would result if support was expanded to the Air.

I agree - the pencil is hopefully NOT the only reason people buy the iPP. I hope not anyways. That's be pretty silly IMO. The iPP is geared more towards the "pro" user although how effective it is at that role remains to be seen and is for a different thread.

As for the Air 3? I have an Air 1 so an upgrade is very possible but they have to make it worth my while. As always.

Guys, the Pencil is a great tool and will absolutely be moving down market through the iPads.

It's amazing for note taking too, not just drawing.
That usage will be VERY nice on the Air & Mini sizes.

It's in Apple's best interest to bring their best features to as many of their products as they can. That advantage is FAR larger than trying to lock the Pencil to the iPP only as there are so very many people who will never buy the iPP simply due to its size.

Apple wants those people still buying and using the Pencil.
