My Nokia 7650 from about 7 years ago could send MMS. There is an app in the app store that lets you send use mms if you are on O2.

To be fair, that app is a (well done) internet fudge round the issue rather than true MMS.

However, Swirly isn't, so I just cannot see a limitation in hardware.

Your right, but it still works.

I just think its funny that I can download music through itunes over GPRS, but not an MMS according to Apple.

The comments are read from the bloggers weren't clear. They made it sound like you could also send your location over MMS. The way it was worded may it seem like the sending your location over MMS wouldn't be available on the 1st iPhone for obvious reasons.

I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet. Pretty lame if Apple doesn't getting working on the 1st iPhone as any free phone can do MMS.

It's definitely pretty weak. Hopefully with enough feedback they'll change this (unlikely).

I'd love to see the announcement if they do: "And wait, our engineers worked all summer to provide a way for you to send MMS not only from the 3G iPhone, but the first one. This will be released in September" (loud applause)

Left feedback as well.

And I too. Why couldn't they have just said "We will not be supporting MMS on the 1st generation iPhone"? What is the worst that can happen, they take flack over MMS? *rolls eyes*...

Coming up with an outright lie is just disturbing.

Mms

I think the big issue, for me at least, regarding MMS (apologize if someone said this already) is that if someone sends you a MMS message and you have an iPhone 1st gen you simply won't get the message (right?). If a friend takes a picture and sends it via MMS vice email b/c they are either to lazy or don't know to send it as an email then you will never know that message was sent. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. Plus i have t-mobile and haven't gotten the t-zones edge plan yet.

You'll get a text message saying you have been sent an MMS message and to view it, you'll need to login to T-Mobile's site.

MMS would be useful on the 1st gen iPhone because we don't all have push mail and so the MMS will instantly be recieived rather than having to check for it in mail. Although, does push in 3.0 mean you can get any email to be push mail? Not just using mobile me?

I think it's outrageous that MMS and A2DP won't be supported on the iPhone 2G. There's no extra radio needed for neither. There never was. This is purely a software update and right now it's just a move to try and make people upgrade...

LOL at those of you who think MMS is the KILLER feature to convince 1st gen owners to upgrade.... MMS? Please. Give me a break...

Heh, good point. For two years Apple doesn't think MMS is a feature important enough to include, and now suddenly it's supposed to be an incentive to upgrade? A dur...

If you really want an iPhone with MMS, just upgrade to the 3G in the summer.

Also, if you're concerned about leaving the aluminum back for the plastic, get an incase slider. You won't be disappointed.

Sad... but I cant update my iPhone anyway otherwise I would have to reunlock it again and 3.0 OS is not yet supported :(

I guess Id have to sell my iPhone 2G and get an Xperia X1 instead :(

Did they mention if MMS will count as a text message?

This might have more to do with AT&T than Apple.

1st gen phones have 200 text messages as part of their $20 plan, but 3G phones have to pay for messages. If MMS is billed like SMS, then that's the reason they're not allowed for 1st gen phones. To paraphrase the Godfather, "It's not hardware... it's business."

MMS is a big deal

MMS is a big deal in the real world of average joe phone users.

Where I work there are roughly 175 employees...

*I do not know of ANY that don't have a cell phone.
(might be a couple)
*I only know of 6 or 8 that have web or email access on them.
(might be a couple more)
*3 have an iPhone (counting me)
*Almost all use MMS at least some, and some use it almost daily.
*3 have told me they did not buy an iPhone because of no MMS.
*Several more simply can't tolerate ATT's bad coverage area here.

It's pretty embarrassing to have to to explain that my fancy iPhone can not forward a text or send or receive a pic message that their $19.00 - $50.00 Verizon phones do all day long.

All I can say is "Oh Yea!... but can your phone do this?"

That shuts em up!!!

Wrong. 1st Gen iPhone support MMS just fine. See Swirly MMS, a jailbroken application available since 1.1.1 software.

Apple just doesn't want to add support, pure and simple or using MMS in EDGE is too slow to be useful.

Exactly... Sometimes you just want to say FU Apple, why can't you just support the original hardware i paid YOU for? If they did that id be more inclined to buy an iPhone, use it till it died then upgrade. Instead they want you to throw away (makes a good argument for attacking them from an environmental angle) your original iPhone and upgrade upgrade upgrade....

Have they removed some feature that was originally included? Does your phone no longer work?

When your contract is up, choose another vendor and then complain to them that they do not have all of the features of the iPhone.

yep. i don't see the point of MMS. i can email pictures for free. people who say they have older phones and can't get emails on them... well if you MMS'd them wouldn't they then have to email it to themselves?

i think it takes a step out of the equation - plus... it's free. i bet AT&T will be slightly upset if push notifications work as well as they are made to do. who would pay for texting with AIM running 24/7?

People are sometimes on the go and they don't have a data plan.

Ah yes, another issue why you would want MMS vice email. I'd be curious too to find out if the new push means everything will be push...my guess is no though.

Jesus, people will bitch about anything these days.

Apple wants you to buy a new phone if you want to MMS. Or just wait and buy a used 3G when others upgrade come June. Problem solved.

If not, no MMS for you.

Well now you can tell all your friends at the old age home that you can do MMS.

IMO this is a step backwards, but if folks like it then so be it. However, I don't understand people who gripe about a feature they consider critical for 2+ years.

If you think MMS is so critical, then you should have been on a 5 year old Nokia years ago.

MMS is completely and totally useless backwards garbage. If I get an MMS from a friend, my response will be "send me a message in an email you mope".

Why should I subsidize my friend's cheapness by having to pay to receive their mms messages?

I was thinking of getting the new iPhone and putting my 3G up for sale... now I can see I can do it here lol
But in all, the 1st iPhone will be 2 years old, I don't know anyone who keeps there phone longer than 2 years. With me, after the 1st 18 months, I can't wait to get a new phone.
