Because the typical consumer nowadays is a spoiled brat who complains about a slight color change in the dial pad of his smartphone.

People will whine about anything and everything. Geez, give it a rest already. Don't like it, go to Android or Windows Phone. Otherwise, quit yer bitchin! :)

1) People don't understand what the update brought.

These. And more. Ultimately, even for the most ardent techies, change turns them temporarily into luddites. Until they familiarise themselves with their new surroundings. It's human nature. People don't really like change, not least of all when they don't know they need it. But SOME reviews of the iPhone 5 have said the thing which dates is is the software. So iOS 6 is a step in the right direction. I love the new music app, shared photo streams, better social media integration etc. I hate maps. But I (with the help of my friends - commercial 3rd party operators) will find work-arounds.

Have you not used Maps in the UK? It's almost useless. Not just because of the black and white aerial photos but because A roads aren't named.

If you don't see a problem you're blind, friend.

Why don't you find a work-around mate? Just like this chap suggests. I am also in the UK, but getting away from google maps is a good strategic direction if you are invested heavily into Apple's ecosystem.

But why wouldn't you download the many transit apps or Waze or use the maps.google.com trick? I mean you are on MacRumors. It's not like Maps or the doc connector is a big surprise. I'm not saying this doesn't suck nor am I saying you aren't right. Just confused how many people who are treating Maps like it's the ONLY app to use for directions. Does it suck that its not all integrated into one like Google Maps. Yes!

I think the idea here is that he/she shouldn't have to find a workaround, because it worked just fine on iOS 5.

Granted, I don't use Google Maps for public transit directions since I know how to use the metro rail in my city, but the poster in question seems to find that function useful (or did, anyway).

Actually, this "ardent techie" takes one look at iOS 6 and starts thinking that the good strategic direction is not investing heavily in Apple's ecosystem any more. The native apps have a huge advantage over using other apps as a workaround -- I can't look up a contact and have the address pop up in Waze, just like I can't click on an address in an email and bring up Safari and Google Maps.

Apple managed to keep all of the things that I disliked about iOS 5 (crappy skeuomorphism, awful UI for iPad Music app, Contacts app that doesn't support groups well and is clunky to use, poor To-do/Calendar integration), while wrecking one of the functions that I depend on the most (maps and discovery of local businesses). Don't get me wrong, I like the new emoji and all, but I don't really see how any of the features of iOS 6 actually benefit my use of my tablet or smartphone.

Well my upgrade process to ios 6 on my 3 gadgets was smooth, no errors at all. I didn't even plug it to my mbp or my pc. I did backup to icloud and then just did the update by wireless.
Functionality not so much different. The new maps app in my country is not so good compared to my garmin or sygic, so no biggie because i have alternatives.
The new app store is good, i like it so far. I bought couple apps and it's good, no error so far.
Battery life i think is a little bit better. 8 hours standby on my 4s and 1 hour usage for updating apps and received 2 calls, the battery is still at 92%. Not bad at all.
Wireless sync still functioning well on my iphone and my ipad, no problem.
System usage is pretty good, i'm using system status to check and control the usage. CPU usage is a bit better than ios 5, meanwhile memory usage is higher around 10%.

But as we know, if it runs perfectly on someone it doesn't mean it will work well on everyone else. Let them seek help, advice and opinion on this forum, because that is the function of this forum. Stop thinking like an anti social and get out from your cave.

While I was downloading iOS 6 earlier, I read all kinds of negative nit-picking reviews about iOS 6 like "it's a huge download" and "Maps app is a disaster."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! It's flawless! I haven't noticed a single negative 5.1, the Maps app works perfectly, and I LOVE the additions they've made.

It's time for people to stop whining and crying about everything Apple releases in hopes of being the next Apple-gate!

You should probably go look up YMMV. Just because it's going well for you it doesn't mean that other people aren't having problems.

The maps app works perfectly? Really? Today I needed head north from where I live (north of London) and it suggested a car route that involved going south into London zone 1 (right in the centre!), turn at a roundabout and then go back the way I came, past my house, and to my destination.

It also doesn't show a bunch of annotations such as tube stations and isn't anywhere near as sophisticated as the Google maps version. Not to mention for an iPhone 4 user there's not much to gain from it (no flyover) while Street View is lost.

There are also numerous bugs in the OS itself. The most annoying one for me is the iTunes store. Never mind the fact that the iPhone version is awful (try searching for something and quickly moving through the results), half the time it won't even connect properly.

Karsal has spoken. Guess no one else is allowed to voice their opinions now? No, it isn't flawless, apple maps pales in comparison to google, and there is a host of other poor design decisions that were made. App Store searches are pathetic, and what's up with the ugliest dial pad I've ever seen in a smart phone? It's one thing if it didn't have all the features you may want, or even have new features that are buggy, it's another to break things that were working perfectly fine.

It's time for people to stop willingly take it up the rear just because you're a fan of the company. Not all of us are sheep. It's great if you like it or are so willing to ignore its flaws, but we don't all share your opinion.

As a person who used to rely on transit directions, I really dislike the new Maps app...not sure why they would release it without any kind of replacement. The rest of the the OS is great. :)

I agree! And the point of direction on the litte arrow. Hopefully, it won't take long for Google to bust out the Google Maps app.

Yeah, because who cares if they removed features and replaced maps with a significantly worse data set. Oh, maps happen to be OK near where you live? That doesn’t make what they have done acceptable.

Sorry that I haven’t been brainwashed into thinking that Apple can do no wrong.

It is not a good strategic decision if you cannot offer a comparable alternative.

So far the solution seems to be “use the Google web app” which is a poor substitute for the native iOS 5 maps app.

If you have to “find a work-around” clearly Apple screwed up big-time.

It's people like you that give Apple fans the reputation as sheep. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, something that Apple definitely need after this release.

Did you all really expect Apple Maps would turn out to be just as good as Google Maps straight ahead? It seems like it.

For me it was obvious it wouldn't be as good, Google have been working with Maps for ages. I think it's a step in the right direction, give it some time and it will surely become better. Going away from Google Maps is IMO the option for both Google and Apple. Now both can update their respective apps whenever they want. It might be a pain in the ass for most, but if you really find it that horrible, use Google maps until you think Apple Maps is working well enough. Luckily we can choose.

I didn’t expect that, but to go against Google, they should have been.

It’s not just the maps app that is affected. Most apps just use APIs that use the system maps data, so they are also using Apple’s maps now.

Flawless lol.
Try the App Store, this company can't even fix a button (refer to the ''more reviews" button)

I don't deny that it's a good thing to move away from Google Maps, but Apple shouldn't have done so until they were more capable than they are currently. If it takes (for example) 5 years to get to the level Google Maps are, they should have worked on it for 5 years and then released it. There's no excuse for dumping a substandard application on users that makes the user experience worse!

Complaining about the workings of something that is completely free really shows the lack of respect to those people who work day and night to make that product work for everyone on every device. Will it be perfect? No, because every system and every app is a work-in-progress. It will never be complete until every customer on this planet stops reporting an issue.

Some of the changes initially confused me. But once I sat down and figured out how everything worked, the shock has worn off and I'm back to being content with a couple new perks like dnd & iCloud tabs.

Completely free?

Wow. Sad part is, your thinking is the norm for most of these apple apologists.

You're confused. No one is expecting perfection, we just don't want it to be WORSE than what it replaced. There's a very clear distinction between what you think we are complaining about and what we are actually complaining about. If you we're not a die hard fanboy you'd have easily recognized this reality.

I'm starting to see the Maps complaint. After reading this thread last night I decided to use the turn by turn navigation to get me home. I work in the Valley (North West Los Angeles area) and live in the West LA area (Santa Monica/Culver City). I said "Siri, take me home." She calculated the route and I was off. She got me 90% of the way, but for some reason she wanted to take me to Inglewood, even though my address in my contact is correct and if you click on that contact address, it'll show up in the correct place.

I'm going to try again today. I have a weird feeling it might have been the Facebook integration which I turned off. When it tried to sync my contacts, it for some reason changed my home address to a general "West Hills, CA" which hasn't been on my facebook account for around 3 months and is no where near where I live now.

My whole point really is that while I understand the complaints about the Maps, I don't think, even with all it's problems, it will be that big of a deal for me because when I search something or use any program for directions, I look first to make sure it's correct or try to use deductive reasoning to make sure it's correct.

Google maps was completely free too.

Well, maybe some people believed Tim Cook when he said it was going to be the best thing since sliced bread.

"In IOS6, we have built a brand new mapping solution from the ground up. And it is beautiful... World wide effort... Beautiful, beautiful maps".

Sounded like a finished product, didn't it?

Stupid them.

Really though the product is only as good as majority of it users say it is. It might work just fine for 40% of users, but if 60% are having 1). Issues with maps
2). Connectivity to wifi issues
3). Battery issues
4). Shut down issues
5). App store issues
Then I think all the complaining is warranted. You just don't release something to the masses with all the bugs that iOS 6 does. When people are wanting to DOWNGRADE to the old firmware,I think their complaints have a solid base

The Siri & Maps integration is outstanding. I've used it, it worked perfectly well, and I don't miss Google maps or 5.1
