You paid for the hardware, the software and all its upgrades come for free. iOS does not guarantee to come with the best apps, there are more than enough customers who've purchased apps they find superior to the ones Apple ships its devices with.

No sir, you pay for the "experience" and the software is part of that. If I paid for the hardware, my iPad would have cost half as much as the Android tabs with better specs.

Apple's financial filings say that I do pay for the software and the upgrades are not free.

So who's right? Because if it's you Tim Cook is going to prison in the Enron wing for a very long time...

The App Store is busted and the Maps app is busted.

Everything else? It seems to work *GREAT*.

But App Store and Maps app? Why didn't they get this crap sorted out during the beta? People noticed HORRIBLE FLAWS back then. When pointed out, people said "WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? IT'S A BETA!"

Well, now it's not beta. It's still terrible.

What problems have you got with the app store? Seems good to me.

ive had no problem at all updating the wifes iphone 4 to the new iOS 6 same with my iphone 4s no problem iam awaiting the iphone the wife will be getting my 4s and iam selling the iphone 4 if your having problems installing just back your iphone 4 and do a factory reset then it will install the new ios 6 then all you need to do then is install your back up job done this happened to a friend of mine

My phone issues turned out to be because the phone was jailbroken. Ended up having to use my old mac to do a restore then update to ios 6 worked fine. But thank you any way.

I like everything about iOS 6 except for maps. I need some time to get used to the new appstore but I don't hate it.

I think Josh Topolsky's Verge review sums up the issues with iOS perfectly:

"Overall, though, this is still the same iOS you know, and all the steps you took to get things done in the last OS, or in iOS 4, or iOS 3 even — well those are pretty much the same too.

And some of those steps are maddening, or poorly thought out. In particular, Apple's implementation of "unobtrusive" notifications while you're using the phone stands out as one the weaker components of the system. Originally I saw Notification Center as a welcome relief from Apple's pop-up messages and alerts, but the way the company handles these beacons can now be nearly as annoying as the previous version. As I mentioned, instead of utilizing that new, taller screen to give you notifications removed from areas of the phone you regularly need to access (you know, like menus in apps), the notifications continue to pop down over the upper portion of the screen. The result is that you feel trapped, waiting for the message to disappear before you can access buttons you need to get to, or forced to swipe to the left on the message — a hidden function which scurries the dropdown away.

Elsewhere, Apple is still making users jump through hoops to perform simple tasks, like switching to a private browsing window or clearing the cache in Safari. It takes no less than six button presses and home key taps to make that happen while browsing...

...when taken as a whole and spread across multiple applications, it makes the OS feel claustrophobic, mysterious, and downright unhelpful at times."

As a person who used to rely on transit directions, I really dislike the new Maps app...not sure why they would release it without any kind of replacement.

Because they are Apple and they know what's best for you. They know what you need and what you don't. Apple does not make mistakes. Every product and every decision is perfectly correct and not to be questioned.

Maybe should have been iOS 4.5 to reflect the backward step from iOS 5 in one of the most important apps.

If you're talking about maps, I don't know anybody with an iPhone who has used it more than two or three times since they've owned an iPhone, including me.

Then you need to hang out with a better crowd. I use it all the time, esp. when away from home. It's a great way to find food / drink / gas / sleep in an unfamiliar area.

So, a "better crowd" relies on a technical gimmick? People have gotten around without Google maps for centuries, and if you ask nicely you'll be recommended a good place to eat, shop or sleep, even meeting some new - what I call - people.

Acquiring a mapping company and developing an in-house application was free to Apple, right?
Cheaper than begging a multi-billion dollar company like Google to agree on anything.

This is one of the stranger comments I've read. I would say the maps app is a top priority app for a majority iphone users. Not everyone uses it routinely, but when they do its expected to work reliably and accurately. People depend on it for directions. A lot of people with smartphones have not used a map in a car that wasnt on their phone for a long time. Some people probably use it several times a week.

I think the new maps app is working fine for me so far but I understand others that are very pissed off. Im hoping that maps is working much better 3 months from now.

While I was downloading iOS 6 earlier, I read all kinds of negative nit-picking reviews about iOS 6 like "it's a huge download" and "Maps app is a disaster."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! It's flawless! I haven't noticed a single negative 5.1, the Maps app works perfectly, and I LOVE the additions they've made.

It's time for people to stop whining and crying about everything Apple releases in hopes of being the next Apple-gate!

</rant>

its only those die hard apple fans acting like lil babies

That's funny because most people I know still own a TomTom or have cars with built-in navigators. And for those planning a trip, they usually do it on their computer with google maps (or some similar site) or they go old-school and pull out a foldable paper map.

The smartphones are mostly used for calls, SMS, emails and looking up things on the internet, as well as the various trendy apps and games.

I might want to add that I talk from a European perspective, since roaming can be very costly. I (literally) paid my dues.

Because of the change, Apple wil need to start from scratch, so people need to give them time until they are up to Google's standard. It's like when a department store is working on a new in-store brand. The products will feel second-class but improve as the brand (and the design team) grows.

However, the majority of people has little patience in this demanding consumer world.

For me the new app store introduces some annoyances:

  • Can only see one app at a time in search on iPhone
  • Scrolling between search results is horizontal, slow, and jerky
  • No way to quickly jump back to the beginning of a search list (like tapping the status bar)
  • The "What's new" arrow on updates is impossibly small to be able to tap resulting in a lot of back and forth from mis-taps

Only people I know that print out maps are my grandparents. Mom, Dad, Friends, etc all use their phone or in car gps. If you live in the city almost all younger people will use their phone for walking directions. I use it all the time when visiting other cities. If you relied on this service and it was taken away from you and replaced with something you can't trust as accurate I think you would be mad too.

All will be better once google gets their map app approved. Then we can have our reliable maps while apple beta tests.

as for myself, I am very satisfied with this update so far, looking forward to what apple will bring us in iOS 7.
