I think you missing the point.. It's the experience that matters. I'm sure an ASUS Transformer can do plenty compared to an iOS device. But a fluid experience across the board is what makes the iPad a great tablet.

MS put forth a huge effort in marketing the heck out of their mobile OS while recruiting devs, but still couldn't pull it off. I like Windows platform, but devs is not lining up to support their platform. They made a huge mistake w/ Windows RT. And now they are attempting to find a solution for a lack of app support... Only time will tell if it will help.

Apple hit a home run w/ the iPad.. And it's hard to sustain such a level. But, at this point I'd bet they wouldn't want to trade their position with any other company.

I agree about RT. THAT is the example of half-baked.

Now the Surfaces (Non RTs) are very fluid to me. The give you ALL the options. I think OSX will touch support on top of what it has now would be very fluid as well, with already good cross-platform support for iOS.

Hell, they have 90% of what I am talking about in the Macbook. Just drop the attached KB for a fully wireless BT one, add touch and make sure there is a good range of power. I even think the 1 port idea may be OK. Just put it on the bottom for docks.

Maybe YOU need that. I've done that (Windows on a tablet)... it's not good. OSX on a tablet would not fare any better.

How is that possible? It is a full computer with touch capability. Maybe the touch is less than stellar, but you can still use a mouse or stylus. A full laptop with touch added. How the hell can that NOT work? Now, it may not be worth the money, but.....

Plus, if Apple wants part of the "Pro" segment, THEY need it. Then again, sheep will be sheep.
Apple adding a couple inches and calling this a pro is insulting to customers. What is next, an iMac Pro? Apple watch Pro with a 4 inch screen?

I'd doubt Apple will add touch support to OS X until they absolutely have to... That is what iOS is for, the way iOS handles multi-touch along w/ how the apps respond to touch. I'm sure Apple already experimented w/ touch support for OS X in their labs.. and decided against it.

There is no telling what will happen with this upcoming iPad Pro... although it won't have OS X, but it could provide some compelling features that's missing from iOS.

Just curious, what are the specs on the "inevitable Air 3"?

Well, we'll never know until Apple releases the product and our friends at iFixit, AnandTech, and so on rip it apart, but here are some reasonable guesses:

iPad Air 3:
  • 9.7" Retina display, 2048x1536 resolution
  • A9/A9X chip with 2 GB RAM
  • Touch ID
  • 8 MP rear camera with 1080p video recording and 240 fps slow-mo video recording at 720p
  • 1.2 MP front camera
  • Improved speaker design
  • NFC?
  • Pressure-sensing display? (Force Touch?)
"iPad Pro":
  • 12.9" Retina display, 2732*2048 resolution
  • A9X chip with ≥2 GB RAM
  • Touch ID
  • 8 MP rear camera with 1080p video recording and 240 fps slow-mo video recording at 720p
  • 1.2 MP front camera
  • NFC?
  • Pressure-sensing display? (Force Touch?)
You'll see these are effectively the same just like iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are effectively the same. People will pick which one best fits their needs and buy it, and screen size often factors into that decision. I didn't buy a 27" iMac because it was cheap—I bought it because this display best fits my needs.

Who "needs" an iOS device that big? That is part of my point. What is Apple going to ask for the size premium?

I assume the size classes will allow for two regular-width (iPad) apps side-by-side in landscape in Split View. We'll see what else.

Took the words right out of my mouth. The iPad Pro in portrait and the iPad Air in landscape are supposed to be the same width. This could allow the above to happen, albeit with less width than the current apps as it would be 3:2 instead of 4:3. Might even provide us with the opportunity to have a third app open. Also, the keyboard is another thing. Having that big iPad landscape keyboard in portrait mode, with lots of space above it. And that full-sized keyboard we saw the other day in landscape.
Oh, and nobody should forget that extra row of icons on the home screen. Huge deal breaker for me.

You won't see any iPad Pro at any local Apple stores. Apple wants to sell an iPad Pro to Forbes 500 companies with big money.

At this point, the iPad Pro is nothing more than a gadget unicorn... a mythical device that only lives on in the imaginations of believers. Without knowing if the Pro is real and what it will have, it is impossible to consider that over the inevitable Air 3. And even at that, the Air 3 may be a very minor bump from the Air 2. (as the Mini 3 was over the Mini 2)
I thought the Mini 3 vs. Mini 2 was just the addition of Touch ID? Are you counting the Touch ID itself as "a minor bump"?

Hi sracer.

So, the iPod Pro "is nothing more than a gadget unicorn....a mythical device that only lives on in the imagination of believers".

Just curious, what are the specs on the "inevitable Air 3"?
I think sracer's point was while the so called Ipad Air 3 isn't known either, it's much more believable that they'll make a successor to the Ipad Air 2, then to come out with some "radically different" Ipad that includes stuff like a larger screen stylus, and whatever the rumor mills have been churning up.

So like Microsoft's Surfaces that costs $10K, and were the size of a large dining room table that seats say... 8?

Yes. I don't see why people think that it is a major deal. The lack of the inclusion of Touch ID on the new iPod Touch 6th gen was enough for some to say that they wouldn't be buying one.o_O

Others argue if you're going to charge +$100 for a new Ipad Mini, then it really should've included a lot more than just Touch ID. This coming from several user opinions, user reviews, and editorial reviews. It's still a good device, but unless you're really into Touch ID, the Ipad Mini 2 at its cheaper price point compared to the Mini 3 is definitely the way to go.

I did hear from some folks here on MR who would've preferred to have Touch ID the IpT6. However, if they pulled the same stunt there by including the same IpT5 specs, but added Touch ID and another $100 to the price, fans would've been pissed for sure!

Me, it still comes back to the lack of 4.7" screen.

After playing with a Surface tab running Windows 10 I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. I love my iPad Air. It is awesome and I use it all the time, but I always find myself switching to my MBA when I need to get work done. The reason I went with an iPhone was because I was tired of carrying and switching between a phone and an iPod all the time. Now I'm at the same point with my laptop and iPad. I want a device that can blend both experiences together. Right now only Microsoft is doing that. I hope Apple can do something similar this fall or I may be going back to Windows (gasp). I think OS x on an iPad would be terrible but I want something more productive than iOS.

I'm with you on that. If Apple doesn't come through with some type of tablet that closes the gap, I'll probably just pick up a Surface 3 (give away all of my other devices) and call it a day.

Apple is on track with iOS 9... It all comes down to devs finding creative ways to implement multitasking in their apps.

I had tried Surface Pro 3... And I agree Microsoft has done an incredible job with Windows 10 & the Surface line. But it falls short of a tablet & more of a laptop due to developer support.

Obviously in terms of functionality the Surface line wins hand down when comparing it to the iPad line, but the seamless experience amongst the iPad & iPhone is unmatched.

Thank you. For the longest time I've felt like a lone voice crying in the wilderness.

I think iOS 9 is a step in the right direction but there is nothing that will make me upgrade devices at this point. Split screen multitasking is nice, but I want something that will blend my laptop and tablet into one device. That means there must be some hardware changes as well.

If I remember correctly, Windows 10 now runs full Windows apps on all devices (laptop, tablet, & phone). I guess time will tell if that is a good thing or not. I could see devs only developing for their preferred usage (tablet or desktop style).

The functionality of the Surface is the lure for me. I just want one device to work on and carry with me. If Apple can offer that then they have my business, if not, I'll be going for a Surface.

I think that is a misstep on MS's part. They should have ONE OS. Then the devs can do whatever they want. If I want to play a game or "app" on my surface or Lumia with touch, fire away. If I want to use photoshop or play Killer Instinct on my gaming mutt or Mac Pro, get in the horse stance. I think their only separation should be between XBO and all other HW. I should not have 2 versions of Hexic. One for Win 10 phone and one for PC.

On Apple's side, I see no reason why we cannot have 10.11 with an iOS imbedded all wrapped up in a 12 inch bow.

I also cannot see how OSX would be any different on a tab than a laptop? Touch vs touchpad? No bid deal to me. Unless you think Apple would release such a device without usb peripheral support.

I agree with some. Personally I hate the idea of an iPad Pro's size. Heck, I hate the size of the Air. I feel like for my uses, the iMac is perfect size for working on heavily detailed work, MBP is perfect size for working on less detailed projects, iPad Mini is perfect size for more casual work and play, and iPhone 6 is perfect size for even more casual work and play + calls. To me, the Mini is perfect, the Air is too much, and the Pro would be way too much.

This gets into that interesting area of "well if it's so big, I want a keyboard built in", but that's called a laptop. Or the idea of an iPad+detachable keyboard/Surface hybrid, which doesn't seem decent to me.

People talking about the size and the need for OSX on the iPad Pro I feel are missing the point, if you have tried IOS 9 public beta you will see why these multitasking features would be GREAT on a bigger iPad. Since trying the public beta I've found that I use my iPad more, yes I also use a Mac as well but I do find that I can now us my iPad for more
productivity, I think that is Apple"s point.

Personally I don't think they will put OSX on the iPad pro, but hey I could be wrong, after all I didn't think they would do an iPad mini :)

I'm not in the market for an air 3 as I have a 128GB air 2 so I couldn't justify the upgrade. However I agree with others on the iPad pro. I can't see how the pro would fit into my set up as its just too large.

Everybody is talking about OSX for the iPad pro. I don' t think Apple will ever release a touch based OS X.
Perhaps it will introduce iOS PRO , with a few added features, with a possibility to create apps in which you can arrange a filing system (for each app separately) and the ability to open these files in other compatible apps.
And more features for adding keyboards/trackpads and the ability to hook it up to a larger screen, adding stylus support. That' s it.
If you combine that with the ability of split screen and other multitasking for iOS, what more could you wish for?

It depends on what you need for "productivity." Multitasking by itself doesn't close the gaps between, for example, the iOS versions of Word and Excel and the OS X versions.

That is true, everyone has different needs! Personally I like the multitasking features on IOS 9's public beta because it helps with writing in the notes app and I'm sure it will be even better with Pages and 3rd party apps when IOS 9 is officially released. However I don't think it will replace a laptop fully, but can a Surface Pro? I'm not sure, I've never used one. But I don't think that the iPad Pro is going to have OSX, but like I said I could be wrong.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple announce in regards to the iPad Pro (that's if it's even announced). Personally I think I would buy one for the bigger screen and to see the multitasking feature on a bigger screen. Maybe IOS 9 on the iPad Pro will have more features? I'm not sure.
