Why are Apple so obsessed with thinner phones?

I strongly advise a case because it is thin. The 6 will be slippery to begin with considering the material it is made from. The thinness on the ipod Touch 5th gen had me fumbling it many times.

It is Apple who is obsessed, not people.

They'd rather be obsessed with thin watches.

Not sure on that, there was an audible cheer and lots of clapping when they announced the thinness of the 6 and 6 Plus at the keynote. As long as they keep hearing things like that, thinness will be king.

That said, we're reaching a place where thinness is becoming harder and harder to attain. Appears they've reached the place where the camera can't get thinner, so this generation may well be as thin as they can get in the immediate future without bumping the camera further and further out.

I've always been interested in horology, especially the mechanical watches that have been crafted over the years. The thinner the mechanical watch, the more skilled and accomplished the craftsman. Even to this day, thin mechanical watches are perceived as more refined and better crafted than their thicker brethren.

For me, the thinner the phone, the better. Larger and bulky items always struck me as lacking refinement and craftsmanship, hence my preference for the 6 over the plus.

They cheer everything at those events.

It might not be Apple at all, but the MARKET that wants thin. If MARKET wants it, then sell it!

I don't feel the market is driving for thinner devices as much as Apple is pushing it. When comparing phones the thickness of it rarely comes to mind.

If I said but phone X has 5 more hours of battery life, a good counter argument wouldn't be "but the iPhone is 3 mm thinner".

Besides for all I'm concerned the iPhone 6 is 7.6mm and the Plus is 7.8mm with the camera. Who measures depth but ignores the deepest part? Lol

That's true.

However, when the iPad 3 got thicker, many people threw that down as a "con", even though it was so subtle. My guess, there are far more people that would like thinner versus thicker when it comes to shiny new tech object.

I'm definitely in the camp of retain current models thickness to increase battery like. Imagine how large a battery Apple could have put it the iPhone 5 if it was same thickness as the 4. But that being said, it does make sense to reduce bulk for the 6. Wonder which iphone model will be the thickness of the current iPod touch? Also wonder how soon for flood of posts about bending the 6?

Apple only give what they think WE want and will buy. It is the users who are pushing thin to the point it will bend in your pocket!

For the record, I don't mind going thinner as long as I don't lose something crucial (ie, battery life) from the prior generation. As long as Apple doesn't start pulling out things I need, or losing battery life to save a couple MM, I'm fine with it.

Everything Apple does with iOS is driven on the idea of improving the user experience and delivering the best user experience.

And locking you into thier eco-system ;)

A great example is the Apple watch. If you want the Apple Watch, you need to buy the iphone.

A great user experience is not forcing someone to spend a fortune to use a watch ;)

You can't even watch the keynote if you don't have Apple or Windows (PC).

But realistically how many folks would buy an Apple Watch and a Samsung phone anyways? Very few and very far between. Features of the Galaxy Gear don't work without the Galaxy phone.

Apple does not care what people want, they do whatever THEY want knowing that fanbois will buy it anyway.

True to an extent, but like I said, what they want to do is with a clear vision in mind. It's just not yet possible to realize this vision with limits imposed by the currently restricted miniaturization of certain components. They are pushing the limits to show where they are heading though. And when they get there, it's going to be as big a game changer as the iPad and IPhone have been to how we live and communicate now vs. a decade ago.

AFAIK, Apple hasn't done anything first, but when they get it going, they do so in a way that integrates technology into our lives in a huge way. Then other companies like Samsung and HTC add their own flavors. And maybe those other companies will be the ones to beat Apple to the goal for once.

But the thing is, Apple is striving to build tech that will be on us pretty much all the time and will be so incredibly all-in-one, that with one device or two working in tandem, we will be able to unlock doors, control our homes, provide identification, provide payment, and do so much more that we are only beginning to explore now. It will be a bit like being a cyborg, extending our abilities and our control over our environment that goes beyond mere texting, web surfing and making phone calls.

It's visionary. And sometimes inconvenient for us. We consumers aren't all blind fanboys or in my case, fangirls. I'm not thrilled about the poor battery life. I'm not thrilled about the protruding camera ring. I think those choices were awkward compromises and I don't know of I would have made them at this stage of the game. But I do get where they are going with the focus on thinness. Which is what this topic asked...why are they so obsessed with thin.

If I really thought competing manufacturers were putting out an overall superior user experience, I would switch. I've looked at their products. I've talked to friends who made the switch. I'm just not convinced I'd get a better experience if I were to switch. So I'm going along with Apple. I do believe their track record is a good one and that they're going to get me where I want to be, eventually.

iPhone 6 isn't quite it, no...but I'm still excited about it anyway. There will be some benefits to the new direction they've taken with the expanded screen size that I want to try.

The ******** though

Pretty sure android wear is not OS agnostic.

Currently my Android device is a Nexus 5. When i bought the phone i ordered Spigen's Neo Hybrid to go along. The phone was so much better as far as one-handed operation was concerned without the case when used with the case. The iPhone6 even with some of the thinner cases is slimmer then a naked Nexus5.

I think the thinner 6+ would be a big hit among users that use 5+ inch devices given that its 15-20% thinner than the Note4

I am buying an ip6+, but can't help wondering why apple didn't decrease the bezel size, ok the bottom one is fixed due to the touchID, but the top one?? It must be due to them wanting it thinner again. But why?? Was the 5s too thick? 7.5mm is way thin enough. Wish they would either reduce bezels & keep 7.5mm or increase battery & keep 7.5mm
This drive for thinner & thinner is holding back the design

It's not just Apple. It's an industry-wide phenomenon and it grabs customers' attention. It's more marketing hype at this point. In the real world, few people would even notice if a phone was 6mm or 7.5mm thick.

I'm a fan of the thinness and love the lightness, now they just have to work on the bezel, find a way to get Touch ID on the screen like the S5 so they can get the screen to the edge, I hope this is what their working on for iPhone 7, not sure there is much they can do for the top with the camera.

Source?

For me the thinner the better.
