please explain to me again about this so called "widely accepted concept", does a 5 years old mac retain its value better than a 5 years old pc? and exactly why do you think so?

Spend 10 minutes on eBay and you'll figure it out

PS, Let me know your 5 years old leopard machine, spec and detailes are appreciated.
?

Not me but here's a writeup about it
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2007/11/looking_into_leopard.html
Since so many of you asked, I put Leopard on a computer that barely met its system requirements--a Power Mac desktop with an 867 MHz G4 processor. (A sticker on the back reported that the Post bought it on July 10, 2001.) Here, the install took almost two hours--but the computer was surprisingly responsive afterwards. Leopard did shut off some of its flashier visual effects, though; for example, the background of the Time Machine interface was a static picture of stars instead of the usual animated starfield.

There have been several other published accounts of Leopard actually running better on old hardware than Tiger did.

As to your original post: Because the market allows for it. Honestly if any of the Macs in Apple's line up meet your needs exactly then the hardware is a solid value. If they don't, then yes you'll be paying more for the hardware just so you can run OS X.

Can you run MacOSX on your so great $1299 PC???

you can actually but you wouldnt be best friends with steve anymore. (hacked OSX can run both on x86 and X64 systems)

Why you need soo many USB ports, if you want speed:
- One FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 port; 7 watts each.
Go wireless.

USB Scanner, USB Printer, USB Flash Drives, USB Headset (for skype), USB Ext HDD, USB mouse, USB Keyboard, USB peripherals in general. (maybe even USB Speakers? they have less electrical noise than conventional)

Ahh! I get it, the PC comes with so many USB ports to try all of them when troubleshooting over the phone with the IT PC guys, more time to have "fun" trying to make it work.

ubuntu needs next to no setting up, you install it thru a graphical interface, and your ready to go.

The fastest Computer to Run Vista is a Mac.

lol no.... the fastest laptop to run vista is the Eurocom/Sager/Clevo 17" beast with SLI video cards and tripple hard drives in Raid 0

If you want an Office Suite: NeoOffice.
FREE.

yes ubuntu comes with open office preinstalled on 1x 695MB CD

Best Things in life are free.

then i guess mac isnt that great then

Opening your new mac stuff is priceless.

?????????????????

Comparing Mac Specs with PC specs is like comparing s and Oranges.

i can see maybe if it was a G4 or G5 but... the new macs are INTEL based

Probably because a 5 year old Mac can still run a lot of current software, including the most current OS? Show me a 5 year old (stock spec) PC that can reliably run Vista.

for new years in 2003 i built myself a computer, specs are

Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2.2 GHz (overclocked it from day one)
1GB of PC3200 Ram
GB Ethernet
Dual 80GB SATA in Raid 0
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

that computer is well above the vista min spec i sold it to my x coworker and hes still using it today... and its still overclocked lol

Don't we get one of these threads every day here at MacRumors? Really, there is no point in arguing Mac vs. PC. If you like Mac, great. If you like PC, great. It doesn't really matter.

well im just trying to understand why ppl pay so much for a MAc.. so far ive learned

Macs have better resale value... (yep because they were more expensive in the first place)

OSX is a better expirience than Windows, well i use linux AND windows, and sure, its easier to use but like windows you have to buy all the optional software to make it work. with linux its all on 1 CD (not DVD)

In that case, I don't believe you've learned anything except to troll this forum and this thread has served its point.
