Some people are just pretentious and foolish, learn to ignore those people and you'll prosper.

However, you neglecting a terrific computer purchase because some zealots or people you don't approve of them use them –*people you likely will never interact with in real life –*is a pretty stupid decision, no offence.

We aren't jackasses, we just understand that our Macs makes us superior to our fellow Windows-using brethren. Don't hate us for being better

Typed from a Windows 7 PC, while my mac sits ignored in a corner

It's simple. If there are elements in the Mac community you don't like just ignore them.

As far as the community belittling new users, where are you seeing that? The Mac community in general is very friendly to new users and willing to help them out.

There are a TON of PC users "poking fun at everyone else and just talking bollocks", ever been to a gadget blog? It's full of people like that.

Usually if you see a Mac user poking fun at something it's usually at Windows and not Windows USERS - Something that MS's PR team couldn't seem to figure out when they came up with their 'I'm a PC' message. Mac users tend to make fun of Windows they've suffered a lot of pain having actually used Windows, whereas most Mac haters on the other hand seem to never have used a modern Mac.

Yes this is a rant and yes I'm a Mac user but I'm sick and tired of so many Mac zealots belittling new or non-Apple users.

It seems to me that Mac users are like BMW drivers - in general, they're complete and utter dicks (edit: sorry, I got carried away, perhaps I shouldn't have targeted BMW drivers). For some reason many Mac users seem to think they're better than everyone else (apart from fellow Apple veterans), spend their time poking fun at everyone else and just talking bollocks.

I became a Mac user about 6 months ago but before that I was a PC user of about 15 years. I'd always wanted to make the switch because I work with PCs every day & they drive me crazy but the pretentious attitude of the Mac community put me off. 6 months ago I needed to upgrade my Windows laptop and so I decided I'd ignore the Mac community and take the plunge.

I'm very happy with my iMac and don't want to switch back to Windows but the obnoxious behaviour of the Mac community is starting to drive me back.

Rant over.

I couldn't agree more, a lot of Mac users think the world revolves around them. Im a PC user currently mainly because I can't afford to get any sort of new computer (This one cost me $300 :( ) I prefer to use windows desktops and after windows 7 was released I wanted to switch to a Mac even less! But if I could afford it I would use a Mac laptop like a 15" Macbook pro mainly because they seem simpler and look better then most PC laptops. Shopping for PC laptops is like shopping in a supermarket full of 10000000 types of essentially the same thing, with Macbooks and Macbook Pros they all have brilliant battery life, and all are fast enough for laptop uses whereas with PC laptops and the introduction of the Netbook it has became FAR more complicated, and I have apprehensions about how fast any netbook would run, so that is why I prefer Mac laptops/notebooks whatever you like to call them.

Reasonable and agreeable Mac users or BMW drivers are usually simply not noticed, because using Macs or driving BMWs is just one of many unimportant attributes that they carry. They don't let it become part of their character or anything.

It's like asking: "Why have people with rolex watches absolutely no taste?"
That's not actually true at all, either. It's just, you only take notice of the ones that actually do have no taste.

Welcome to life. People are jerks.

That's why they made headphones and gameboys. So people can ignore those who are annoying.

Welcome to MR OP. Hope to see you around.

If only they kept the volume low enough it wasn't spilling out of their headphones like they are loudspeakers. Grrrrrrr.

I think Mac users are usually more snobby because rich people are usually more snobby, and rich people usually use Macs because they can afford them.

I also think that people think Mac users are complete jackasses mainly because PC users portray Mac users as complete jackasses. I see PC users bashing Apple and Mac users FAR more than I see Mac users bashing PC users.

Go to a general technology website like Engadget and read article comments. Almost every article comment section I've seen has at least one person talking **** about Apple or Mac users, regardless of if the article has anything to do with Apple at all. It's like that at pretty much every other forum/blog I go to. Mention ANYTHING about Apple and 90% of the time it turns into "OMG APPLE SUX," "MAC USRS R GAY," "EVRY1 WHO USES MACS R FANBOIS," etc. And anybody who says something about Apple without bashing them is instantly a fanboy/zealot.

You probably think that most Mac users are pretentious jackasses because that's what everybody else screams on every non-Apple-related tech website. If you pay attention, you'll realize that a majority of the pretentious bashing (outside of MacRumors) is done by PC users.

I've already gotten in trouble for calling someone a jackass once, so I am going to word this very carefully:

While there are some members of the mac community who are over-zealous to an extreme on occasion, one has to wonder about someone who signs up for a mac oriented forum just to call members of said community jackasses.

Hmm..I just noticed that since you pointed it out. No other comment.

Now I've had time to think about it, what I was really getting at is that many Mac users come across as bullies.

We should have a zero-tolerance against bullies and I hate it when users think they can bully (with personal attacks) simply because they see others as somehow lower than themselves. Of course this happens in every online community but it seems worse on Mac forums.

I've been lurking around Mac forums for about 12 months and I've tried to ignore it, but I got fed up & posted this rant.

Anyone who has used Macs for a significant amount of time will tell you the BS flies both ways.

You'll find just as many Windows users who want to shove their preference down your throat as there are Mac users. Probably more, just because there are more of them.

really? I mean...really? Guess there's no point to argue with what you perceive to be true, but I rather doubt that this issue is worse on Mac forums than in other online communities... Do you have an example that you're using as a point of comparison ?

In fact, on most online messageboards, you will get hazed for mentioning that you even own a Mac.

I think at a certain point, everyone gets tired of the prejudice and misinformation and decides to hit first.

hi I'm a mac and I am a victim.
See that all the time in forums

I can see what the OP is saying, but I think the very simple fact is human beings have not yet progressed from living in small tribes, it doesn't matter if you pick cars - Ford v GM, BMW v Audi - in fact only the other month Clarkson made the point that in the UK at least it's now acceptable to buy a BMW again, because all the "pricks" - his word not mine have moved on to buying Audi's. Or you pick OS's or brands of jeans - Gucci v Armani, sports teams, whatever, I find alot of people are so pathetic that cannot define themselves in terms other what they buy or who they support, geeks simply add a layer of Betamax is better than VHS to their self definition.

I grew up in a small town in England, where my parents owned a small shop for 18 years, so I had to serve in it after school, it taught me that about 10-15% of the people who came were just selfish and awkward, everybody else was OK. Life has just adjusted the percentage a little dependant on situation.

Do not let other people's stupid behaviour control you.:D

So, do you plan on coming in the forums often? Have you been lurking? You really just have to learn to ignore the ones you refer to. You can even click "ignore" if you didn't know it.

This. If you think mac users in the real world are a pain just wait until you meet them here. There are morons everywhere, but i do agree that i see a larger percentage of morons clinging to the teat of steve than i see most other places.

I gotta agree with this (especially Engadget). It even happens on this forum at times.
