"Call Molly"

Molly Smith or Molly Doe?

"Smith"

Home or mobile?

"Cell"

Calling Molly Smith, Mobile

Of course I could have just said "Call Molly Smith Cell" and saved a lot of needless back-and-forth between me and my phone.

Hopefully you'll be able to say things like "Text Molly Smith, tell her I'm running late and I'll be there in 10 minutes." Which will be really handy while driving.

And maybe integration with other apps, so I can say "GPS, find the nearest gas station." after it texts Molly.

More likely, based on what the SIRI app will already do-

"Send Marry a dozen long stem red roses whith a note saying I can't make it tonight."

Tell me that this video didn't make you cry at the end. :D

It didn't - since it wanted to install some proprietary plugin in order to see it.

What's with Apple's "HTML 5 forever, death to Flash" stance when they're pushing their own poison?

My PC is Apple-free, and will stay that way. Nothing has given me more headaches than Apple software.

* Android needs more CPU because the damn OS is a resource hog unlike iOS.

If this speech thing is the killer feature of the new iPhone, it's the worst "killer" feature ever. I don't see people using it. I won't.

I use voice dial all the time. I could see myself using speech to text as well, if implemented in a reasonable manner.

I was just reading up on the history of Siri. It came from the CALO project ( Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes ). It was a DARPA funded program. I wonder if this means that other companies should have access to the AI technology of CALO. Siri itself spent time releasing the app and within two months Apple bought it. I do not see many iterations in AI that Siri has gone through beyond CALO. Just a thought.

It also looks like the Speech Recognizer itself is not the biggest deal. It is modular and so Nuance ( another SRI spin off ) engine itself can be replaced with something else. ( not that Apple needs to do it ). But the message is, what happens beyond the speech recognition is what is interesting about the Siri Assistant.

my only thing is I wish I didn't have to press and hold down the dang home button to use speech stuff. But I do like the ability to talk to text feature when driving.

I do have to question... you seem so distasteful of Apple products yet you post on an Apple forum, why? I realize you can play the opposing viewpoints card and that's all fine and dandy, but really, what motivates you to post since you seem firmly in PC-land? (which is fine, really)

I think you are in the minority. Truth be told, I don't think the average consumer will use icloud either.

Try

'Get me a taxi'

Then the assistant does all the work and a cab picks you up.

And it calls the most expensive cab company with the worst customer service. You really want something like this to be able to make a mistake like that?

Do you expect us to swallow that?

Nm. Too Easy.

Or, crazy people buy Iphones, the rest of us buy good phones.

Where "good phone" is a phone that is good at making voice calls, and doesn't drop them right and left....

"Magic" is fun when you're watching a Harry Potter movie, but it doesn't do diddly for you when your phone drops an important call.

Really you are taking your own ridiculous trolling to amazing new levels (Congratulations). I realize you want to believe the 80 or 90 million iPhone 4 owners are all delusional lunatics, but that is pretty unlikely.

Why are you here?

Ask yourself why only Apple has this "cult" following of "stupid" users and Samsung/HTC/Nokia can't seem to swing that?

My comment was that even if there isn't anything but a name change, people will still be camping out to by the iPhone. It won't matter to 99% of the public, as long as they think it's a new iPhone, they will be like sharks on a feeding frenzy. What does that say to you? And we both know that it would happen this way.

What % of iPhone sales are these fanatics who camp out all night in front of Apple Stores?

I have a screenshot of you saying the same thing about the iPhone touchscreen back in may 2007.

With way over a billion phones sold per year, "the rest of us" is more than 90% of the market.

Sounds impressive, but when the iPhone 5 comes out I'll be buying an iPhone 4. Seems strange that it would be an A5 only feature but that wouldn't be the first time Apple has only support certain features on the newer phones only. :)

Touchscreens were an easy logical leap -- many people had grown used to using touch tech in trackpads on their laptops for years.

This you should post.

That being said he does have a point. It is not going to be something used that much. Kind of like the "killer feature" known as facetime. We all know that it is a fairly unused feature and even made fun of.

Voice control has been around for years and still not wildly used. I sometimes use it on my phone but it mostly so i can get a text off faster and easier at a stop light. Other wise it goes completely unused and I see this being a lot like that.

That is next to useless and sucks battery.

4.3" screen.

Which makes the device bigger and not very one-handable.

Faster CPU.

More memory.

And yet, the apps are crap and the UI is slow and clunky. What good is a fast CPU and lots of RAM, if the end-result is still laggy and slow?

Fast CPU and lots of RAM are a means to an end. They are used to accomplish things. If you can accomplish same things with less RAM and slower CPU, then what benefits does that extra RAM and CPU-cycles bring? Nothing. Besides, Android probably needs more RAM and CPU due to the architecture (Dalvik...)

No walled garden.

Which means that the apps are spammy and crap.

I cAN mAKE pHONE cALLS wITHOUT tHEM dROPPING!

I cAN mAKE pHONE cALLS wHERE i aM - i dON'T hAVE tO dRIVE tO bE uNDER aN AT&T tOWER.

So the problem is AT&T, not the iPhone?

There's no user manual that says "you're holding it wrong".

No, but there's HTC tech-support that says that:

"Then I could go on to say it doesn’t have an antenna issue like the iPhone 4. That would be a lie, because it does. If you hold it wrong then you’ll be constantly losing your signal and wonder why. I emailed HTC’s support team about this and told them that it really needs to be fixed. The man told me “Hold it differently.” It seems that any way I hold it causes a problem with the signal, no matter if it’s on 4G or not."

For some reason, some people insist on trolling Apple-related discussion. Like Mr. AidenShaw here. He brings nothing constructive to the discussion, he just wants to come here and annoy people. It's about as constructive if I marched to a middle of a gay rally, and started telling them how they are perverts and sodomites who are going to burn in hell. Yeah, that's basically what he does here. He's hell-bent on annoying people.

Which is quite sad really. He basically hates Apple and their products, yet he spends his time here. He has nothing positive to do, so he spends his time acting negatively here, with zero positive contribution. If I were him, I would spend time with like-minded people, trying to achieve something positive. But no. He's on some kind of anti-Apple crusade, and he has determined to make people understand the depth of his hatred towards Apple. Instead of building something up, he wants to tear things down.

Like I said: sad really. Hopefully he eventually finds some positive meaning for his life.

Actually I know lots of people who use facetime.

I think these features are more for adults.. so maybe that is why some of you are having a hard time finding purpose in them.

Voice control and assistant are not related any more than a pencil is related to a touchscreen.

That is next to useless and sucks battery.

Just like 3G was useless according to fanboys when the first iPhone came? 4G is not useless, but yeah, it drains battery.

Which makes the device bigger and not very one-handable.

I don't find the iphone very one-handable as it is, and I got pretty big hands. Using it with one hand really strains my thumb, very awkward angle.

And yet, the apps are crap and the UI is slow and clunky. What good is a fast CPU and lots of RAM, if the end-result is still laggy and slow?

Complete BS

Which means that the apps are spammy and crap.

It's perfectly clear that Apples review process is anything but a quality assurance check. Any app will get through as long as it doesn't conflict with Apples interests, no matter how crappy it is

This is probably the first post ever from you where you start a sentence with "I think..." instead of "This IS the way it is", but then you resort to your usual arrogance

Just like 3G was useless according to fanboys when the first iPhone came? 4G is not useless, but yeah, it drains battery.

3G was not useless, in fact it was the number one requested feature. 4G is useless, since the availability is so low and it sucks battery like there's no tomorrow.

Complete BS

it's not. Every single Android phone I have ever tried has a laggy and crappy UI. Even the ones where the phone is loaded with megabytes and megahertz.

It's perfectly clear that Apples review process is anything but a quality assurance check. Any app will get through as long as it doesn't conflict with Apples interests, no matter how crappy it is

keep dreaming. Malware is a real issue with Android. iPhone, not so much.
