Damn. Now I wonder why should I get the Nokia + WP7.5, but with Apple Assistant, that means I'd be using a clearly inferior device! I really want Metro UI + this!

Given the right sounding voice and the right running commentary, such an "assistant" could inject a whole new level of excitement to the experience.;)

As long as the assistant recognized the richness and diversity of human gender identity and expression, and didn't assume that you were a white exclusively hetersexual male only interested in the missionary position.

Search for the various "my TiVo thinks I'm gay" and "my TiVo thinks I'm straight" comments on the interwebs to consider the possibilities of how this could go awry....

(When my husband and I (avid SCUBA divers) got our first TiVo, we put "tropical island vacation" in the preferences list. The next weekend we checked what was on the list, and it had recorded half of the "Gilligan's Island" episodes ever broadcast!)

Call me skeptical but I don't think a software featured is going to drive gazillions of sales to a phone that looks identical to existing models. The average consumer likes Apple because their products are sexy and it's easy to tell them apart, an iPhone 4S with some new software is too geeky to differentiate for the average Joe.

It won't matter, people are dumb. They will by the phone in record numbers even if there are no changes. The average person just zeros in on the name, iPhone, I want one.

Ask yourself why only Apple has this "cult" following of "stupid" users and Samsung/HTC/Nokia can't seem to swing that?

Will history repeat itself?

How many remember?:

Clunky speech interfaces are a thing of the past and something for Android/WP7 users to suffer through. If you want to live a beautiful life, buy an iPhone 5.

Some questions have no answers....

That Iphone 5 will go on sale 16 months after the Iphone 4S, in March 2012?

Maybe THE most obvious answer is Apple creates magical devices that provide the most easy/intuitive UX compared to everything else and that's why people are so crazed to buy iPhones.

Or, crazy people buy Iphones, the rest of us buy good phones.

Where "good phone" is a phone that is good at making voice calls, and doesn't drop them right and left....

"Magic" is fun when you're watching a Harry Potter movie, but it doesn't do diddly for you when your phone drops an important call.

Explain why your Android phone is superior to the iPhone 4.

4G LTE.

4.3" screen.

Faster CPU.

More memory.

No walled garden.

(Actually, this describes my husband's Thunderbolt - I have an old WinMo 6 phone that's a much better *phone* than friends' Iphones.)

I cAN mAKE pHONE cALLS wITHOUT tHEM dROPPING!

I cAN mAKE pHONE cALLS wHERE i aM - i dON'T hAVE tO dRIVE tO bE uNDER aN AT&T tOWER.

Friends with Iphones ask to borrow my WinMo phone when they need to make a telephone call and their Iphones are getting no signal.

There's no user manual that says "you're holding it wrong".

Larger screen, thinner, sexier, faster processor, more RAM, better camera? I'd buy one.

Same old look and feel, but a little faster with higher resolution photos? Just not sure I'd buy it. And I think the competition loves that fact.

I love how in the first sentence it's stated "faster processor, more RAM," and in the 2nd sentence it becomes "a little faster," even when two will have the exact same speed improvement. Does the newer case make the phone go faster too? :p I know I know, I'd love a newer design too! :D Just one more day and then we can all begin speculating on the iPad 3!

* Android needs larger screen due to lower pixel density(no Retina Display).

* Android needs more CPU because the damn OS is a resource hog unlike iOS.

* Apple's "walled garden" keeps out trojan/malware that infests Android market.

oh and this idea that IP4 drops calls is ridiculously overblown FUD.

I hope it activates quicker than Voice Control does. Holding down the home button and then waiting for the beep is nearly 5 seconds.

Voice command comes up in three seconds on my iP4.

But how will this technology assist people in their consumption of Internet porn?

Assist? In iOS 6 this will be updated and given the ability to read your mind so that Apple can brick your phone when you merely think of using it for internet porn.

I know, I took some creative liberties with that statement to make my point :)

All that voice stuf is cool at first but get's old quick.
I can talk to my android and "write" entire emails, text messages (very accurately once you get used to it) and whatever I want to yet I use this feature once every chinese year. It's out there for ages but nothing groundbreaking in my opinion no matter how apple will make it look.

Did you read the article? Siri is several iterations ahead of the next best VRS. Whatever you see in Google Voice Commands or MSFT TellMe is primitive by comparison. The Apple PAL will allow you to use natural language and conduct a conversation with you about virtually everything in the iOS. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if you can edit settings with this!

The article didn't even scratch the seface, even now Siri will make reservations, buy movie tickets, and order a cab for you. I am eager to see what they've added since Siri came out.

apple always says this "needs" crap to get you to spend $300 on a new phone but fact is in ever case you can run all this carp on a jailbroken iphone with some simple code tweaks..lol Most folks only use facetime BS 5% or less so booo

Could you please stop using bold and headline font sizes? The rest of us would appreciate it. Thanks.

so if this AI was so revolutionary why did it not get implemented in desktop computers first? why is it implemented in the devices with the least processing power first?

i guess we will be very underwhelmed with this feature........

Because they implemented it on the device you always have with you. Your Mac can't get you a cab when you're away from home.

I still don't understand how this differs from WP7...

"Call Molly"

Molly Smith or Molly Doe?

"Smith"

Home or mobile?

"Cell"

Calling Molly Smith, Mobile

Of course I could have just said "Call Molly Smith Cell" and saved a lot of needless back-and-forth between me and my phone.

Try

'Get me a taxi'

Then the assistant does all the work and a cab picks you up.
