Fair enough. Ive exhausted myself on this one, wshoo. Good sparring with you mate. and for fatguy, i feel you. Im about to hop to germany and ill have two days to get the macbook here and refitted. Talk about a close call.

Now i guess when i get there ill have the "chasis shocks" from using european wall sockets. Better pack my rubber gloves (of course, that is if only .001 percent are solely experiencing that problem) ha ha, alright i wont start back up. Ciao

Chassis shocks are the worst, unfortunately they're going to be unavoidable if you use dirty power and aren't grounded. A friend brought this problem up very recently, so I'm curious to see if my suggestion to route the ground connection of the power adapter to some metal object in the environment of the computer would actually work (I don't see why it wouldn't but I don't know how the ground connections are made in households).

Also, the class that met right before one of my classes this summer was second-semester German, which I'll have to pick up at some point if I keep studying math. I envy those who speak the language, I think it's actually quite beautiful in its own ways...

I originally had a Samsung screen that had a white spot in the lower third, right of center, so not all samsungs are immune. Had it switched with a LG display (they switched the displays since I didn't want to wait a month for my custom build to be swapped). So far no issues, nutlike others have said, time will tell. Hopefully I'll get to put it to task this weekend.

My first rMBP had an LG screen and also IR problems. The replacement has a Samsung and no issues thus far!

Having said that, my previous primary TV [ now in the basement ] is a LG [ 55" LH90 ] and it's PQ will still kick any LED TV that Samsung puts out, except the discontinued Samsung B8500 from 2009.

Bottom line is, LG screens are no worse than Samsung. It is rather unfortunate that the majority of IR issues being posted on forums are of LG screens!

CCFLs are usually top and bottom as far as I'm aware.

Your acer has a TN display. The issue they exhibit off-angle is inversion - it'll be apparently even on non-dark images. The IPS issue I'm talking about is visible only on near-black images. Everything else is near perfect.

PVA displays have an off-angle issue where the apparent gamma changes.

Yeah CCFL is one lamp (bottm) and 2CCFL there are 2 lamps straight or bend shape it is just neon lamp

God, these quality control issue Apple has been having with their high res IPS displays, both on the iPad as well as on the RMBP, are pathetic. This is my third try at the RMBP, the first one had ten dead pixels when I first noticed them. I don't know if it had an LG or Samsung display, and I can't tell whether it came with these defects or whether they formed over time. The second one had an LG display and initially no dead pixels, had 3 dead pixels after two weeks of use, and has 8-12 dead pixels now (with some it is a bit hard to see if they're one or two in a cluster...all I see is 8 white dots scattered all over the display on a black background). Now I got a Samsung display for a replacement. It has no dead pixels at this point, but two light bleeds at the lower left and right corners, that effectively look like dead pixels. I'm using this image to check for these issues:

Pretty frustrated at this point. The Samsung display is overall pretty uniform, and has no dead pixels (yet!) in areas where they would be most noticeable, however the two lower corners worry me as they are also clearly brighter areas beyond the full bleed.

I am planning to buy rMBP tomorrow in store.

What things should I check when I get it?

Those comments scare me because I cannot get replace after 2 days, because I am leaving US

I wouldn't worry as much about the difference between Samsung and LG. I would worry about dead pixels being created. However if you develop more than ten dead pixels (I did over the last week) you can always return it I believe (double check this though), even after the 14 days.

Returning and warranty in my country just sucks. They offer it in 30 business day.

They probably request money too, whether you get it 14 days ago or not. Whether it is under warranty or not

Well to be quite honest, while it saddens me to say this, based on my experience with three RMBPs I can honestly not recommend getting one unless you have the ability to return it.

That said, from all I know >10 dead pixels has traditionally been considered a serious flaw by Apple to the extend that they repaired screens or replaced computers for free under warranty. So I'm a bit skeptical of your claims that it would be impossible to do anything about it.

Either way, if this third RMBP I got will develop any dead pixels before my 14 day return window is up, I will return it for good and settle for an Air until they get their act together with the RMBPs. I just don't have time for this.

Actually that is normal so I wouldn't worry about it. I tested all the demos at my local store. They all displayed similar bright corners under certain black backgrounds.

My experience with LG vs Samsung is the same: LG had yellow tint and weaker contrast than the 2 Samsung panels I've had (the first was returned due to damage on the actual laptop). My latest Sammy panel is very nice - no backlight bleed, dead pixels, or yellowing.

I never saw IR in any panel.

This is what I call a Russian Roulette :D

As you like gambling, here are some quotes that apply to retina gamblers:

* Luck always seems to be against the man who depends on it.

* Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

* Luck sometimes visits a fool, but it never sits down with him.

* In gambling the many must lose in order that the few may win.

* A gambler never makes the same mistake twice. It’s usually three or more times.

"Why can't apple stop using lg screens and just use Samsung."

Maybe because the LG screens are better?

The only test I have seen so far comparing the two said this (higher contrast and color accuracy for the LG).

Excellent post.

Just for curiosity I tested my 2008 MBP Unibody. That display is flawless. Turns out it's an LG.

I wouldn't be worried if I had either panel to be honest.

Open it uP at the store, download a black background a look closely, and lastly get a piece of paper and put it in front the display and make sure the paper is white.
If you would like you can do the terminal command to see which display.

LG display in my late 2008 MBP runs circles (side by side) in many ways around any of the rMBPs I returned. Brightness, color uniformity, white point - the old one wins. The new one was better on contrast and black level (to be expected with a new display ...).

In fact, without having to be able to benchmark the 45 month old display against the brand new one, I might have been less upset about the defects in the new rMBPs.

White paper is to understand whether it is yellow or not?

it is JUST piece ... like all products .. they are made in series on the line and that piece will be perfect but the piece behind it or befor it wil be crap .. it just production . and it s about luck who got the immaculate piece in to hands ..
same is with cpus .. they has same specs but for example first cpu on the production line will be better tan second one if u guys got me

with regards to OP, since when are samsung TVs/displays universally better than LG?

i've never heard that

the thing about samsung (i thought) is that their color representation appears more "vibrant" so it looks "better" to the viewer but isn't actually any better.

also FWIW i have become so used to a "cool" bluish screen that "true white" seems almost yellowish and harsh to me

just like i thought natural scrolling was completely counter intuitive and now i instinctively do it on all trackpads (even though it typically doesn't work)
