And ALL that time it was beautiful and protected what were you holding in your hand?

An iPhone in a case.

You say it's looks won't last long without a case. I say you cased it and never got to see it's good looks.

What I wonder about people who use cases, particularly the Otterboxes is this. You guys are all so wanting to protect the dang phone, when do you ever enjoy the natural beauty of the phone?

If it's cased all the time, is there like a once a month viewing where you pull it out and look at it for five minutes before the paranoid itch to put it back in it's case lest the air scratch it becomes too much? And then it goes back in the case? Or what?

Or does it stay in it's case all the time and the only satisfaction you get about it's looks is the "knowing" that it's perfect when you sell it?

This is another thing about those who use cases that I've noticed here. Seems to be the only reason to case a phone is to protect it so that your resale value does not diminish.

I have to assume that buying an iPhone is only about the resale value and iOS. Because when the phone is cased iOS is about all you can see of the phone. You never see the beauty of the phone because you have it cased. Unless you bring it out for a viewing every so often.

There are believe it or not, those of us who do not sell our phones. I don't need a case because of resale value. I don't resell my phones.

You talk about the iPhone like it is a fashion statement, I use mine as a tool.

To each their own.

I can understand not using a case. I can understand using a case. I can NOT understand why it would bother someone else that I use a case. What a strange thread.

I use my phone for those uses. But I bought it because I liked how it looked.

Come on. If we all operated on this mentality that it's only a "tool" then there would be no need for competition. No need for other handset makers. If it was only a tool, there'd be one standard, one maker and no one would care.

Nope... I buy Craftsman because of the warranty, some buy Dewalt because of the flashy yellow, others by Kobalt because of the price...

=================

Turn on iPhone. Use it for its purpose. Close it down until needed again.

Its a phone people. I don't look at it as a piece of art, a family member or something to show off. I use it as a personal tool, nothing else.

The iPhone is a tool and should be used as one, but Apple spent a lot of time, money and effort, to make it beautiful. I would argue a piece of art, you aren't wrong to not think of it in that way, but those of us who do appreciate the iPhone as artwork aren't wrong either.

All of which do the same job. And are differentiated by what the manufacturer does or offers.

In your analogy, Apple is Dewalt with a Craftsman warranty.

Still a tool, but a beautiful tool (or flashy if you prefer).

Note that there do not seem to be cases or covers or anything of the like for the items of the brands you mention. :)

I have a case on mine because the metal is slippery... I don't find metal a nice material for a phone. It's slippery, hard, and the edges are sharp. It rattles (such as in cup holders), it slides (off a seat or bed), when it vibrates it makes a terrible noise if left on a hard surface (desk), it's less easy to hold onto (slippery when dry), gross when hands are wet (or sweaty)....

Some people would rather fix all those issues and others rather than stare at it all day. It's just a rectangular piece of metal. And like OP says, once it's scratched, dented, or even just worn a little, it looks a lot less attractive.

Do as you wish with your own phone... But don't judge others when they have solid reasons for using cases. Maybe they just don't want to mix up phones in their house.

Incorrect, Crafstman ALWAYS come with at least a plastic case for protection! :) Dewalts come in a bag, and Kobalt is in something classified as a plastic case...

If you do not put something on it to prevent scratches it's good looks will no last long. Anyone who say different is in denial. I used a Sedio Surface on my 5 and it looked like new with zero wear when it went out of service for the 5S.

I used my previous iPhone 4S daily for two years with no case and not a single scratch (despite being dropped on one occasion). Your statement is not only offensively arrogant, it is also wrong.

I currently have the iPhone 4 and I use an otterbox defender on it because I hate scratches and because that case kept the phone on my car as I was driving down a busy road for a mile until I realized it. The case paid for itself. And cases are cheaper than the cost of a replacement through applecare

I see it this way... ( no offense to you ) but if you or anyone puts their phone on top of the car and forgets it being there deserves their phone to be smashed, broken, stolen... destroyed etc. etc.

Exactly. I mean, I'm always curious why someone who works in an office buys the biggest, thickest Otterbox case to sit behind a desk, but to each his own.

I use a case because I tend to drop small gadgets a lot, so a case it is for me. I love the look of the lifeproof case on my 4S.

I use Otterbox Defender cases because they get bumped getting in and out of my car, sitting in a chair with arms, hitting them on a doorframe, etc... Yes, I work in an office, but my phone still gets bumped!

I can't believe people are arguing over using a case vs not using a case. I love arguments over personal preference/opinions. Makes a lot of sense! It's like arguing over the best color.

Well crap like that happens when you have severe storms with hail and tornados coming and the priority is getting people into the car to get home before it hits. Crap happens. The otterbox worked beyond its described purpose

My iPhone 5. No case. No scratches, no scuffgate. Some wear, yes.

Use a case if you want to because your phone MUST be pristine and life happens and whatever. I'll just enjoy using my iPhone 5 without a case.

When Most people are gonna put a ugly case on the phone . iPhone's Beauty is Naked but nobody wants to have a scratched/broken expensive phone . So imo the Premium build has no aesthetic at all.
Because subjective preference, differing priorities, etc. Why are you worried about what others care about? Do whatever works for you. Others will do what works for them.

Ugly and beauty are subjective as well. You can't assume that what you find ugly or beautiful is exactly the same as everyone else.

In any case, build quality and aesthetic are two entirely different things.
