I think it's simple.... it's to throw off the competition.

I'm sure developers at Samsung are in a meeting right now trying to figure out how to duplicate the new iPico. :p

Or, look for the iBurrito with ApplePico sauce coming to a TacoBell near you!

Why Did Apple Register ApplePico.com?

Because it was there.

Seriously, if I had more cash than the US government, I'd register any domain name I could just for the heck of it.

people keep saying "ipod pico" as in "ipod nano" etc., but wasn't pico the os powering the classic ipods?

According to about.com, that was Pixo, not Pico.

LOL MR hesitates to read too much into it, but makes a massive post about it on the front page.

Good point. But they add in the disclaimer so they can have it both ways. This is just how the rumor business goes (at least among good rumor sites).

* If it turns out their guess was right, they can take credit for it: "As reported on MacRumors back in 2011..." (win)

* If it turns out to be something they didn't predict, they can still point to this article as showing they knew it was something worth mentioning, even if they didn't know why yet. (win)

* If it turns out that nothing ever comes of it, then it either just goes away quietly or they can say they were clear that they never said anything would come of it. (no harm, no foul)

It's only the rumor sites that come out and say "Powerbook G5's tomorrow 100% sure!!" that end up looking foolish in the long run. I trust MacRumors to say what they do and don't know, which is what matters IMO.

Maybe we'll see an iPod Pico (since Pico is smaller than Nano)...

Interesting!

AppleTV + projector? No TV Needed!

Hadn't thought of that. I don't think it will happen simply because projector images are not as aesthetically pleasing or bright as a regular Plasma/LCD TV under regular conditions and more importantly, most living rooms are not setup for projectors.

However, a pocketable projector with some Apple magical extras that worked with all Apple products would be fantastic. Hook a Bluetooth equipped keyboard to an iPhone that is connected to a projector and you have a 'laptop' with an adjustable display. Great for projecting onto the rear of a seat in a train or aircraft! Hmm....

Don't forget about picocells...

They're typically an extension of the mobile network and are slightly different from femtocells due to how they connect to the mobile network.

Wikipedia has a nice little write up on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picocell

Think of an airport extreme or a time capsule with pico / femto capabilities to boost your wireless coverage.

It's already been unveiled and it's "magical."

socrammtz is right.

New low-end phone. It's not being called the iPhone: iPhone means gold standard of phones and Apple don't want to tarnish that. The new phone will be the Apple Pico.

The pico projector by Microvision: http://www.microvision.com/pico_projector_displays/index.html

Apple should buy the company, miniaturize the projector even more, and put it into an iPhone!

Think the article was long enough?
