Ok, I foolishly wandered into the 5th Avenue Apple Store around Xmas time. This being my first time in a flagship store (the only other I'd been to was Chicago), I was dumbfounded. I immediately purchased a Black 2.0 MB, despite saving up for a MBP, my rationalization being "How bad could this GMA thing be?" I was quite impressed with it, but that shameful GMA 950 forced me to buy a 2.4 Ghz 15" 6 months later. I can say I'm very pleased with the MBP, much more than I was with the MB.

Agreed, I personally as well do not like integrated graphics as well, which is why I manly went with the MBP, and 15.4 is still very portable.

I had a G5 iMac but just recently replaced it with a midlevel Macbook since my old sucky PC laptop died. I'd seriously thought about a MBP but the size was the sticking point - no way did I want to go bigger than 13.3'' considering I'm not even 5 feet tall. :p I'm not a gamer so the integrated graphics wasn't a concern, and while I had some reservations about the glossy screen I found myself loving it - my iMac's while larger looked fuzzy and gray in comparison. Performance wise it's a substantial improvement in all but boot/shutdown time (possibly due to having boot camp installed?) and that's with the original 1Gb RAM. I'll undoubtedly upgrade to 2Gb at some point when I have the cash to spare, but I haven't felt the need to yet.

And all this for $1100 (educational discount + no tax state). Pretty sweet. :) It really does do all that I need.

1) I need a light notebook for my travels.

I got the Macbook for portability. I have the MBP as well and I don't think the extra weight is worth it unless you MUST have the larger screen size.

I thought they both weighed the same. I should really check that up.
You are quite correct. The difference is only 0.2 pounds, or 3.2 ounces. If one can notice the difference, then I suggest the following:

:p
The things i love are the light p keyboard, the smooth feel no sharp edges, the case is so nice macbook scratches, and the power :)
I believe the question was why get a macbook over a macbook pro ;)
Though all of your points are correct.

Apple gave me a MB free as a replacement for a fried PB 12 inch......i was quite pleased....to say the least...the integrated graphics have never bothered me in the least.....

The sharp edges bother me a bit tho.....

i like the plastic construction more, as it is more durable.

really? Im looking at a MBP (waiting for updates though) because the plastic on my MB is cracking on the sides. Its annoying as hell and I've had to crazy glue part of it. I really need to take some pictures of it.

Im thinking about selling it just because I dont like the plastic anymore, and also.. that backlit keyboard is sweet! Power suits me just fine, but the better GPU would just be icing on the cake.

Price.

When I got my macbook, I was a poor college student. I needed that extra $500 to pay for gas and textbooks. I needed a laptop at the time and so all I could afford was the black macbook.

I still love it ^_^

Price...next time I may get the Pro if I can afford it in approximately 2 years...

I chose the the Macbook Pro because i run CS3 and the animating program After Effects. No games.

I'd say anyone creative or who likes gaming should go with the Macbook Pro. If you just have a computer to surf the web, email, chat, run smaller programs, then get the Macbook.

yeah i agree ^.

Got the macbook because of the size, and I am not into the aluminum thing...it's a little too flashy for me.

Also because I wanted to be able to mod my macbook easily. Memory and hdd are accessible, and overall cheaper for me to go with macbook.

This is just what I'm trying to choose between ...

We've just been paid our bonus this year (at last!), so I'm trying to decide between blowing it all on a MBP or going for a MB and putting some money in the bank.

The main thing about the MBP is the screen quality. It looks so sharp and clean ... but other than that, I'm not sure I can justify spending the extra cash. I need a machine mainly for work stuff (presentations, documents and all that) and apart from that I'm just going to be browsing and emailing and I think the MB probably fits that role better than the MBP.

That and the fact that it's smaller - and I plan on taking whichever one I get, everywhere with me :D

I order of priority... for me...

1) I like the smaller size of the MB. The screen size, the footprint, etc.
2) I like the MB specs. I don't need more "power" for mostly surfing the web. Of course, I occasionally do other things too
3) I like the MB "look" a lot better. I don't like the MBP look (looks old). Maybe it's the cool "Apple white" that I like vs. the battleship gray.
4) I like the flat keyboard a lot more.
5) Price is much better. With savings I bought iPhone at original price.

Would I ever buy a MPB?

This would have to change... in random order.

1) Style. Flat keyboard. Not look like an old computer.
2) Size. I like the smaller size. 15" is ok... but 13' is really portable.
3) Cheaper. I really can't justify the higher price for what I need.

Regrets regarding my purchase?

I ordered with extra memory (2GB total) and am not sure I really need it. But, I'm installing Leopard and parallels soon. So, I think the extra memory will be good for me. I also bought .Mac at the discounted price. So far I haven't used it. So... for me... a waste of money.

Getting use to a 13" screen was a challenge at first. I use 17 - 20' dual flat panels at work (PC environment), so my usable desk space on my 13" mac is about 1/3 of what I get at work. It took a month to get accustomed to 13".

Overall, I'm very happy I got my MB. I'm excited to see what future upgrades will occur (with MB design) next year. I hope they don't go battleship gray!! haha

MB has a sharp leading edge on the wrist rest which bugged the hell out of me when I tried it out in the shop. MBP doesn't.

MBP has a sharper, higher res, brighter screen (even before the LED came along) - the MB screen looks quite soft by comparison.

MBP looks the dogs.

So you chose the macbook for these reasons?

-Not just price but the much better value for me - I could have afforded the MacBook Pro, but as a second machine I couldn't justify the extra money. And I have used a loaded Pro and know how lovely it is, but the difference is too much. I think the difference between the blackbook and the pro is pretty steep, let alone even the top-end white model (the model I own).

-Easy to replace the HD. I had a HD fail on my old iBook and it was a right pain to replace. I find it downright odd that it's not as easy to replace a HD on the Pro as on the standard MacBook.

-Smaller physical dimensions - I like my portable to be portable. As others have said, a 13 inch Pro would have made it a much more difficult decision. The 15+ inch machines are just that bit too big to feel such a portable product IMHO.

That said, there are of course things about the Pro I wish were incorporated into the MacBook too e.g. backlit keyboard, FW800, Matte Screen option, dedicated graphics card/memory...

My ideal portable would be a 13-inch (or even smaller) thin aluminium or black MacBook Pro with a hi-res matte screen and the easily replaceable HD of the MacBook.

For now though, I love my white MacBook with 2GB that cost me less than a 1GB blackbook, and far less than my equivalent G3 iBook did years earlier.

It's amazing how this 1 minor detail is the 1 thing which is stopping me from getting a Macbook, if only it were backlit :(

It isn't that big of a deal. For the most part, it's only useful in a handful os situations, and turning up the screen brightness by one or two notches usually does more than enough. Remember, you only need to get your fingers onto 'f' and 'j', and they have raised bumps;) (those bumps are for the blind to be able to type, and if you are in the dark, I think your ability to see is compromised).

Hey guys!

I'm stuck between Macbook and the pro, I like being able to max out the macbook, get 2 software packages and the 2 year warrenty for $2000, instead of just picking up the lowest end macbook pro.

So I'm curious: How many of you own a Macbook? And why did you choose the macbook over the pro?

Thanks,

Josh

It is cheaper. That is the reason.
And, actually I just like a screen of 4:3.

like what everyone else here is said the price. i would have loved to buy a pro but i was paying for most of the computer and the rest was a graduation present. but when im done with college i plan on buying the newest mbp before i leave. other than that i love this thing and have no regrets what so ever!
