I was very close to buying the MB for many of the reasons stated in this thread (price, size), but the extras of the MBP proved hard to ignore (excellent graphics card, superior keyboard, timeless aesthetics). I ended up with the 2.2 (my first "pro" Mac laptop), and I absolutely love it. In fact, I love it so much that I may end up getting the 2.4 before too long.

I don't care if they update it; the computer I'm typing on is essentially perfect (which is likely why it has largely remained the same for so many years now).

Why I choose MB over MBP:

I wanted a MPB. It would have been nice but overall it came down to:

1. Weight and size: It's small and light enough for me to carry around in a bag and take with me wherever I go

2. I don't do any graphic intensive work or heavy photoshopping so the money spent for a MBP would have been a waste.

3. Macbook can handle basic photo editing, video editing.

4. I only use it to store music, photos, watch movies, post the occasional blog, surf the internet, chat, and write reports. So I did not need the extra power of a MBP or needed the extra firewire slots.

5. The Macbook and iphone combo have been a chick magnet. :D

Again, the weight is only off by 0.2lbs. Very few people can discern the difference (and if they can, they need to lift some weights!). The size is a valid comparison, but the weight is a moot point.

The average consumer is not going to care. Some individuals will see a metal cast laptop and naturally think heavy. This is what I did and I would much rather carry a laptop that is even slightly less heavier around than something bigger. And im not interested in paying another 500 - 1500 dollars for a few more ounces and extra power i have no use for.

The rest of your post was correct, but the weight really is a non-issue. And most customers pick up both laptops or read physical descriptions before making such a large purchase, so I'm guessing that with the macbook/macbook pro, they realize that weight isn't a significant factor.

My Macbook pro (intel core duo) beats my buddies Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo in just about every spec we tested. And with the new upgrade of leopard the start-up, log-in, log-out times have seemingly decreased.

I haven't had an issue at all with this machine, besides my comma key being a little stuck everyone once in a while and my ethernet port a little worn out (that is definitely my fault though). The only way the next laptop I will get will not be pro is if they don't upgrade the airport card, because I really lose on wireless compared to my friends macbook and even my brother's iBook!

Also I'd love to have a 13" MBP soon, I am getting a little tired of the 15" widescreen, especially now that I have spaces! I really love that program, and find myself cluttering the iMac's huge screen with out it. haha

If money was really and option to everyone here, you'd all buy Dells or Toshibas. Just save up a little more if that is the only thing stopping you from a pro laptop.

Agreed, I carry around a MacBook Pro around, and it isn't that heavy to notice. The stuff I carry in my backpack is considerably heavy than what I have in my laptop bag :D.

Ya me too. If you don't keep an eye on it you could get bitten!

With time and effort you can tame it.

These days i only buy Tamedscreen laptops!

I just wonder why so many company like to use a wide screen. I have never sound somebody like it.

You see the world in wide screen. It is more comfortable for your eyes. Maybe if you were a cyclops/one-eyed then 4:3 would be more comfortable.

Well, I haven't actually upgraded yet (still using my PowerBook), but the MacBook just looks better. More compact, lighter, and it's well... cuter. *Shrug* I like cute.

I probably just neglected weight then. Overall the Macbook was the better choice but had I enrolled in Graphic design courses at school or worked in a field where the power is needed I probably would have went for the pro. Both computers are good in the long run.

I do have some cons with the MB:

Plastic casing is cheaper and after a while may start to peel in some areas. Mine has done this near the track pad.

Sometimes I wish there were more than 2 usb ports and the cd rom speed was faster

I'll be getting a white MB at the first of the year. I'll be getting it begrudgingly though. I would really like something more along the lines of an MBP, but I can't deal with the aluminum. My laptops take a beating and a MBP simply isn't a true portable in that regard. I need the wireless to be good too- aluminum isn't so great for that either.

Just watch though- they'll update them next month and all the laptops will be aluminum. :(

I'm fortunate enough not to have had any mishaps with my MBP, but when I had my 12" PB, one time I managed to drop it a few feet onto my hardwood floor. It didn't leave a dent but I think there was a small scratch IIRC. I don't think they're quite a delicate as you may think. It takes a bit of a shock to do any damage.

Regardless, even if Apple do release an AlMB by early next year, you could always save a bunch by buying a refurb plastic MB. I bought my Core Duo MBP after the Core 2 Duos were released. Saved quite a bit of money that way.

1 - not everyone actually want to sit on their own money waiting for that moment
2 - dells and toshibas don't have OSX

reasons why i chose it.

1. price- enough said on this. i didn't need the extra power, as i wasn't doing high end stuff.

2. design- i've always liked the macbook design better, felt fresher than the pros, especially the keyboard that didn't feel as cramped and flimsy as the pros. all the ports on one side, alot simpler than having some ports on one side and some on the other. and the smaller size won me over as well, 13" was perfect for what i wanted in a notebook.

3. hard drive- replaceable in a macbook (without voiding the warranty) in case the first one fills up. i intend on installing leopard on a new hd when the time comes.

Unfortunately, I also know how my laptops get abused. I dropped my iBook 7 times now, amongst other abuses. I don't think a MBP could handle that. I have a tiny crack on the corner of my iBook, even with all that. My other issue with the MB is the glossy screen.

the only 2 reasons i see are price and size.

here's a third: durability. here's a fourth: heat transmission. here's a fifth: wi-fi reception. i'll stop there, but i could go on. any of these were enough for me to choose the mb over the mbp.

1. Size
2. Easily upgradeable
3. Laptop Gaming?

Lest we forget.

I only got the MacBook because there wasn't a 13" Pro model.

If they make a lighter 15" or introduce a 13" MBP in January, I'll be dropping this like a hot potato!
