People buy new phones every year or two... Therefore they don't want their new phone to look exactly like their old phone.

If that were true or a factor the 3GS and 4S would have sold poorly compared to their respective predecessor.

The refresh cycle actually makes sense on many levels when one sits and thinks about it.

Could Apple perhaps be worried that a class of iPhone with a bigger screen might cannibalise iPad sales?
Apple is not worried about one of their products being chosen over another. Apple maintains fairly consistent margins across their line (ignoring accessories), so it is not an issue.

i think it's going to look like this

but i prefer this

This tapered design with pill shaped home button was obvious in the final stages, or at least really being considered. I wonder what happened to this idea?

Hi All, I did some 3d renders comparing the iPhone4 and iPhone5 (model inspired from leaked parts) Hope you guys like it :)

I assumed the new gorilla glass will be thinner and flushed to the metal frame. I added more colors options since the back is metal like the iPod nano.

I am totally on board with this, can't wait to be amazed by Apple!

I seem to distinctly remember "parts" that turned out to be a sham pretty much every release after the first iPhone. Frankly, it wouldn't be hard to fake an elongated backplate byt actually making a physical item yourself. For some reason, not sure why, but likely the publicity and hits it provides, people seem to enjoy spending countless hours trying to convince fakes are real. As I said, I am not saying what we have isn't real, but just because we had someone show us a couple parts of what looks like nothing more than an elongated phone (again, this would be the easiest fake to fabricate) I am reserving judgement. Frankly, we cannot be sure. You say you are 99% sure. That still means you are not sure. :)

We've seen the same parts from several sources. I see where you're coming from, but that is most definitely the phone.

Apple actually needs a 7" tablet, otherwise its ambitions in the publishing market will come to nothing. I don't find the iPad at all pleasant for reading books on as it's just a bit too heavy.

I agree. I don't like reading on my iPad 2 or Xoom because of their weight. I know a lot of people that are Android tablet and/or iPad owners that have got a smaller android tablet or kindle (or whatever) just for reading books. I think Apple could have really scooped up that market.

On the same note that definitely would have had an effect on iPad sales. However it shouldn't effect iPhones sales so apple still wins. You'd have an iPhone and some sort of iPad plus most of the people getting the 7" version wouldn't have a Android or kindle.

Perfect? The iPhone 4/4S has serious flaws. Glass backing that is slippery. Stainless steel sides and a flat back that make it awkward to hold to your ear. A small screen.

I like my iPhone 4 a great deal but it has serious room for improvement. Unless Apple has a huge surprise in store this fall, you should not expect anything beyond a 4" screen, LTE, a different backing material, and a thinner device. You need to determine if those changes are enough to satisfy you or not.

All of these are your personal issues. Not flaws at all.

It would be nice to have an aluminum back in line with the iPad etc. I have a continuity OCD

Please ......

It'll be bad for business if they keep the same design for 3 phones.
It will be a redesign,%100 Guaranteed.
My old Power Mac still looks the same as the current generation of Mac Pro's (with the exception of an additional drive bay). Apple isn't going to change just for the sake of change. I was hoping for a radical change as well, but am getting used to the longer form factor in the recent renders. I'm in no matter what, though. Well, as long as it supports LTE, which should be a given since it's included in the new iPad.
