Well OP. Where are you ?

Have you...

1. Deleted all that junk you saved over God only knows how long..

2. Done a complete Restore and Clean install, not a restore from a back-up

It is almost like Apple has a magic switch and it flicks it on after about 18-20 months that causes the phone to slow down, so people start thinking about an upgrade even if the don't want to.

My iPhone 4 which was fine until recently suddenly seems to have slowed down for no reason. Maps, Safari, opening apps everything seems to take a second or two more. This happened to me with the 3G and it is now happening again on the 4. I haven't done anything to my phone out of the ordinary. I've just been using it like always do.

Well for me, I'm running ios6 beta and the phone has gotten FASTER. Safari web browsing is close to 30% faster.

I think a big reason for this effect is because as phones get faster and faster, we get used to how fast they currently are, and when we are using an older product, such as the iPhone 4 that is 2 years old, it doesn't feel snappy like the 4S (obviously) or any current high end phone out, that is probably dual core, etc. And plus, as you use a phone, especially over a couple years, all the stuff that has been downloaded, texts, voice mails, emails, music, apps, app info, etc will accumulate and cause it to slow down. It's just like any computer. Clean it up, do a fresh restore, get rid of some stuff. You want to feel slow, get your hands on a 3G, lol.

Well u all have a choice.

Want your phone as fast as new?

3gs stick with ios 3
4 stick with ios 4
4s stick with ios 5.

It's your choice, fast device with less features or more feature but less performance.

U don't expect to put more things in a truck and expect it to run as fast as there is less things in that truck.

It's that simple!

Sorry I cannot concur.

The iPhones can handle the firmwares as confirmed by the apple site.

If a firmware holds new features and specs and apple confirm your particular device can run it then why would one stick to an older firmware.

When ios6 is out of beta I fully expect my iPhone 4s to comfortably run it without issue.

Newer iOS are more complicated and slow down your phone. I would do a clean restore every couple of months if you notice slow downs.

They have to do it. Otherwise, who would buy apple's overpriced crap?

Exactly! Operating systems never increase in size, apps don't ever get new features, and nobody expects more out of the same hardware than they did when they first bought the device.

I suppose you'd say it would be reasonable to expect that all modern software should perform well on an ancient Sumerian abacus?

Because your suppose to upgrade every year!:p

I've noticed that if I don't clear my safari history, caches from settings I can get up to 1GB of wasted space freed up.

It's just perception. You grow accustomed to how fast something is and then something faster has to come along to give you the new feeling.

If you had a 200hp car for 2 years and then you got a 400hp car you would see the difference. Then when you got used to that one you move on to the next one and the next one until eventually you're in a truck with a rocket attached to the back.

breaks down? in what way?

I don't mean literally breaks down as in, as someone put it, disintegrate. i meant more like.. it starts to break down as in it's not in its new condition anymore and cause problems and become sluggish because of all the years of usage and your phone not being able to handle the new updates.

My i4 handles the updates fine and doesn't feel 'slower' by comparison.

Clean restore sounds great in theory, but as far as I know there is no way to restore your txt messages. Kind of a big deal to a lot of people.

No, it actually does get slower over time.

How does that happen? in terms of years usage causing it to slow down?

While that can be true to an extent, I would say the bulk of decreased performance is that the OS and software becomes more demanding than what it was when the phone in question came out

You know what, I'm not a computer expert so I can't tell you exactly how that happens. I can only tell you what I've experienced in the past and what I know is, both my iPhone 3G and my macbook that I've had for 6 years have significantly slowed down. No, I am not just imagining it. And I tried factory resetting it and it did get faster. twice. But I noticed it slowed down again at a faster rate than before. I dunno exactly what happens inside those computer chips but all I can tell you is that through MY experience, my iphone and my macbook never went back to how it was when I first bought it. Therefore, I'm deducing that the performances of these gadgets deteriorate as time passes. And as I posted before, it can also be that the phones and laptops can't handle the updates.

It's because the OS and apps, etc bog it down. The actual processor is still performing how it did when it was first used. The fact that you restored it and it got better proves that.
