I have mine naked in my house when I'm using it or it's lying around. I want a skin for the back to prevent that awful scratching sound when it moves on its back.

I use my heavy duty case for when I take it to my parents house or work. I slide it in my car or in my messenger bag for work, and it's just too risky to not use a case.

Because I don't want to break it! I am clumsy, I drop things, and I paid $500 for this and don't want to mess it up. My phone is in an otter box. I dropped it down the steps not once but twice now, without the case it would definitely be toast. My iPad is more minimalisticaly covered with just a smart cover and a clear Belkin shell on the back. I like the feel of the rubber/plastic of the Belkin better than the aluminum and I like the functionality of the smart cover. I also have a little neoprene bag that I use when I take my iPad out to work or Starbucks or whatever, makes it much easier to carry when I'm not carrying any other bag.

Why do you care anyway? If you don't like cases don't use one, some of us do.

The iPad looks great but it is not the most comfortable device to hold over long periods of time. A case gives extra grip and the one I have is designed to be used for long times. I'm usually anti cases and anti screen protectors but the iPads sharp corners means its not that comfortable

I hate cases, never used on iPhone, but it's must have for iPad, not just for safe reasons.

Carry an ipad around naked for a week and you will see why people use cases.

Sounds funny... like a naked person carrying around an iPad :p

Seriously though - I've been carrying naked iPad around for over a year with no problems. Just gotta be careful where you set it and how you put it down!

I'm away from home quite often and the thought of not having my iPad in something protective fills me with dread. Simply putting it into my rucksack along with my keys and other things could potentially lead to scratches on the screen and back, not mention more severe damage. I currently have a red leather smart cover on my iPad and this slides inside a neopreene Belkin sleeve and I then put the whole thing into my rucksack. I also like to keep a microfiber cloth in the front pouch of the sleeve along with my pogo sketch stylus. I wouldn't be able to if I didn't have a case.

That said, I would love to leave my iPad out of a case and carry it around unprotected. Sadly, knowing my luck, if I did this it would end up scratched to pieces. Money down the drain, and a limited resale value when I want to upgrade next.

You're right though it is a thing of beauty. All I'm doing is protecting this :)

Why do you cover up your beautiful body with clothes?

Because its not socially acceptable in 99% of the modern world.

I don't use any protection other than the smart cover, but that's mainly because I don't take my iPad out of the house often.

I agree that I haven't seen any case that isn't completely ugly, but that sort of thing is objective.

If you feel the need to put on a case then rock on.

Whilst I completely agree, Apple devices are designed so beautifully, and it's criminal to 'hide' their sleek lines away, if you use one of the better thought out 3rd party smart cases like those from Invision, that put a close fitting shield on the rear and leave the front glass completely exposed whilst in use, your not really losing the beauty of the device!

Every now and again it's nice to just hold the device 'naked', but since I don't spend much time admiring the metal rear, I don't feel I'm missing out having it protected properly. I also feel its vulnerability when it's not in some sort of protective case, and with a £700 investment I think it's worth just looking after it for when I'd like to upgrade to the next version.

Having dropped my iPhone 3GS and wrecked the LCD (despite it being the most ergonomic version of them all with its contoured back) and subsequently dropping the less ergonomic 4 a couple of times, I pretty much always have my 4S in at least a bumper with rear protection type case, and so far it's protected the new phone from a few dings!

The simpe truth is that Apple portable devices are designed to look gorgeous, shiny and slick, but they are not really designed to withstand much more than careful admiration! - a great example of this would be the mirrored chrome rear on some iPods, and the iPod touch - you only have to put it down once, and the back is marked!! - shiny yes, but only when you first open it, then it's shiny with imperfections :]

Ditto on the mirrored chrome iPod back. The biggest mistake I made was to take mine out of its case. Totally ruined now, covered in scratches.

iPod touch and classic backs are a joke. U pretty much look at them wrong and they scratch.

True that! I need a new iPod and at the moment the only thing suitable would be another iPod classic (need lots of storage). When will Apple give us something less scratchy!

For grip mainly, and secondarily scratch protection. While the iPad does look nice, it's more of a tool to me than a thing of beauty. My old iPad 1 has a tiny dent on one corner, but that doesn't make me like or enjoy it any less. No way could I hold onto the iPad for very long if I didn't put a cover on it.

The ability to angle the device for my viewing comfort is one reason. The fact that I tend to upgrade early and seldom keep any device longer than a year is another. Electronics that are kept in pristine condition hold better resale value.

Go and put your naked iPad in a messenger bag along with your bundle of keys, a can of coke and many other bits n bobs. Am sure everything will be fine

If you bought a tool and not a work of art, you shouldn't be afraid of your tool being used and scratched ;)

I understand a stand adds something though, that is why a smart cover seems like enough as far as protection in my mind.

You really can't conceive of someone using their iPad differently from you, can you?

The inside of my case is suede, which keeps the iPad from sliding around. I often use it propped on my lap, or holding with one hand (which I can do by just resting it on my hand rather than gripping it with this case) while dealing with a wriggly baby. The bare back of the iPad is annoyingly slick and hard to handle.

Also, in terms of looks, I like my faux-leather case better than the non-leather smart covers and didn't want to pay $30 more just to get a leather smart cover.

I agree with the OP, all cases just make it look rubbish IMHO. I get that they can be functional and that some people prefer to have the peice of mind protection-wise. But I just prefer to have the device as Apple intended it, not covered in leather/plastic when I'm using it.

I do, however, have a sleve inside my bag and I use a smart cover so I can take it out of my bag remove the smart cover and use it just iPad and me! :)

Because I bought a tool, not a work of art, and my case/stand makes it a more useful tool for me.

If you wanted a functional tool you should have bought an Andriod to be honest. They are far more functional, iPad has far more flair though....

Use mine naked around the house, and a Jison case when I take it out. iPad 1&2 were used similarly, sold for great prices as they were both in perfect condition. Much much nicer piece of engineering naked, a case is only essential to me on the road.

Not really sure what you mean by this. I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7, brilliant piece of kit, but the app selection is frankly pathetic. Excellent for what I use it for - rss feeds, browsing, reading and video (for which I find it better than the iPad 3 due to the super Amoled plus display) - but utterly pathetic otherwise in terms of apps.

Guys,

The ipad is a beautiful device, but I see everyone putting ugly sleeves or cases to "protect" their device. That is so weird to me... why would you buy such a beautiful device only to put it around ugly plastic or neoprene ?

The ipad is a mobile device, it's made to be used on the go...

You wouldn't buy a plastic case to protect your car... why do you feel like doing it with your ipad ? I've never protected my phones, ipods, or laptops, and I never had any problem with that.

What is your reason for buying cases or sleeves ?

I actually didn't buy a case to "protect" my iPad. I use a case to enhance its usability. I can't imagine trying to type or even view anything for extended periods without a case.

I imagine that is exactly why Apple came out with the smart cover, they realized that it is a lot harder to use the device without one.

I have an Armour skin on the back and use the smart cover. I am very careful with my stuff and drop things. If I was clumsy that way, I would certainly have a case.

Same here.

Some people treat their iPads like it's something to be preserved in a museum. I see the iPad as a tool like a wrench, a pen, a truck. As such it gets used often and is used in situations where it can get beat up so I try to protect it the best I can. When I know I'll be outdoors, I take it in my Otterbox for when I'm surveying sites. However if I'm indoors often, I'll switch to my Zagg Folio so I can type on the excellent bluetooth keyboard.

FWIW the iPad 3 should not be used with any screen protector from what I can tell "if" you care about benefiting from the retina display quality. The screen protector on the Otterbox turns the Retina display into an iPad 1 display.

I throw my iPad in my backpack, which contains other potentially sharp items such as keys, pens, an umbrella, etc. I also want something to hold it upright for viewing movies or at an angle for typing. Right now, I have a smart cover on my iPad for a minimalistic look, and I put it in a padded sleeve before it goes in my backpack.

This. As someone else said, you can't compare an iPhone to an iPad here. I don't have a sleeve or any other kind of cover for my smart phone, because it 'lives' in a separate pocket when I'm out and about. My iPad lives with my keys, pens and so on in my bag. If I didn't give it some protection, I'd just lower the resell value for no good reason because it would scratch very easily.
