iPad 2
new iPad

newer than new iPad
it really is new this time iPad
we're serious you'd better believe it's new iPad
holy cow this is amazingly new iPad
iPad 9

Can't wait for the iPad 9T (for thinner):D

Why do people keep calling the newer iPads, iPad 4 and iPad 5? When their names are iPad (4th Generation) and iPad (5th Generation), 4th Gen and 5th Gen for short.

5th Gen is what I think the next iPad will be called.
I don't think Apple will go back to the past and call the next iPad, iPad 5.

Even the editors here insist on using the very much less likely of the two possible names.

I fail to understand why people simply refuse to name the product properly. This is an Apple fan site with some pretty fanatical Apple fans on it. That is cool. But for people who are that into Apple, they are pretty stubborn on using the incorrect name for the iPad.

Yes we are Apple fans here but we aren't worshippers that have the need to post about a naming convention that is so obviously short hand. Have fun typing out the entire name while we save time and do something with our spare time.

The names should be like the lap tops. iPad late 2013. When you're up to 5 and putting out 1 per year, it doesn't make sense to use the numbering system.

I don't think the OP got the response he/she was expecting.

Actually I did. Apple fans only take seriously what they want to take seriously. They think the names Apple give their products are a joke. This is evident by their refusal to use the names Apple gave them.

'freedom of speech'
Very correct. It's not illegal to call it whatever you want. I was just trying to find out why the people here do this. And it seems the answer to that is "they call it whatever they want to no matter what anyone else says no the subject.

as previous posters have said, it's easier to call the it the 'ipad 2', 'ipad 3', etc instead of '2nd gen ipad", etc. no one is just making up names off the cuff.

if you're going to post a rather pointless thread, at least take the time to draw the correct conclusions. if you've been a member of this forum for as long as have and with the # of posts you have, boy you sure waited a heckuva long time to ask this question.

I did make the right conclusions. They made up a name based on the names of the previous models. You can justify what ever name people use however you want to. And I've been asking this question off and on for years, I just decided to make a dedicated topic about it now.

People have been doing this with other electronic devices with multiple generations for years. Don't people call the 2nd generation Nexus 7 the "Nexus 7 2" or "Nexus 7 2013"? People wouldn't be doing this if companies completely changed the names of each new generation, but that's never going to happen, so we tack a number on the end to quickly show which generation we're talking about. Why would we say iPad 5th generation when everybody knows what we mean when we say iPad 5?

As someone who used macs "back in the day" where they labeled them like SE, SE30, IICI, IISI, IICX, IIFX, Centris 650 ;) and so forth, it was confusing for all but the hardcore nerds. When Jobs came in he phased out that kind of naming and made it simple. There was just iMac. You have an iMac and I have an iMac. For most consumers that is good enough. No need in confusing people with iMac Rev A vs iMac Rev B.

It's about simplicity.

OP, would you please make a report on this thread using 100 words or less, why this really matters to you so much as to make a thread to those that don't give a hoot, and instead make your rant to Apple, and see what they say.

when you post comments like:

"Apple fans only take seriously what they want to take seriously. They think the names Apple give their products are a joke. This is evident by their refusal to use the names Apple gave them."

then it is evident that your conclusion is incorrect. lots of us do it for the sake of convenience, not because we necessarily think that apple's name is a joke. that's what i was trying to point it - the joke park you allude to is your own inference and a bad one at that.

ps. why do you keep asking this question over and over then? it sounds like you don't accept the answer and are hoping to get a different one more to your liking each time. good luck with that.

I can't speak for any other Apple fans, but iPad 4 is common shorthand usage; especially since Apple still uses terms like iPhone 5S, not iPhone (Sixth Generation, Late 2013). Its a trivial matter and not worth getting agitated over. But if you want to see it as something malevolent, go right ahead.

Too much free time? Surely you can use your brain power for more productive meaningful ideas then what people nick name a product.

I can't believe this thread was made.

Wasteland please.

Yep.

I'm waiting for a topic claiming that the next iPad will actually be the iPad 6, because! With the same ridiculous arguments we got last year about how the iPhone 5 would actually be called "iPhone 6".

HAHAHAHA oh man, you jokesters... always getting me...

Oh. OP is serious. I uh. Well. Uh. Hm.

Cocaine is one helluva drug.
