It's Apple, it's people, and it's the Internet.

Apple have always been a polarising company, and the serial litigation between Apple, Samsung and Google puts the 'hate' in overdrive. But it's not just phones, anti-Apple sentiment goes back as long as I remember. How about the GHz Wars? Windows vs Mac OS? Pentium vs PowerPC?

Everybody knows the Internet is a place where normal people come to fight, because they have anonymity and a large audience. It's human nature to be aggressive, and the internet is the perfect place to let loose, usually with no repercussions. (Obviously not always, ie. cyber-bullying).

Personally, I enjoy a good internet flame, as there are so many examples of stupid posts without any basis in logic or reality, just begging for a schooling.

As a member of this forum, Phandroid and Android Authority and a frequent reader of both I can tell you there's far more vitriol on this forum than the Android forums.

The android forums are much more informational, maybe because there's far more phone choices.

I know two people like this. They legit will get made at me for liking iPhones iPads iPods and macs.
I really don't understand why they care so deeply about what I use and like

A guy I follow on Twitter responds to anybody who mentions an Apple product with "You don't want that" and promotes Samsung mobiles (despite not using one himself) and Chromebooks at any occasion.

In one instance he actually outright refused to tweet "iTunes Store" instead he stated he "does not use that service that you mentioned" in reply to a tweet about iTunes.

I'm not entirely sure what Apple did to him or his family, but he's very, very aggressive towards them and their customers.

An example
Tweet - "I think I want an Apple Watch!"
His reply - "No you don't"

I agree with the OP and its something I have noticed across a range of sites. Of course there are fans of iOS that do this to Android users but I would say its definitely worse going the other way. There does seem to be a large dislike for the iPhone amongst techies and this is reciprocated on many of the tech sites like Engadget, Gizmodo, Tech Radar, Tech Crunch etc etc. Perhaps people who are passionate about tech feel every device they use should be totally customisable and free? I think iOS gets on peoples nerves because its pretty locked down and it annoys people that others are not bothered by this?

I'm an Android defector in effect and I've been interrogated many times as to why I chose to go to a different platform. Something I don't really have to justify and its something that really is about as insignificant in life as what toaster brand I have in my kitchen. We all enjoy gadgets and for different reasons. The hate we see is just arrogance that others don't all share the same opinions. :)
I would say it's more Samsung users than Android users. Samsung users hate on anyone who isn't Samsung. They not only troll apple articles but HTC articles.

I would have to agree with the OP. Now are there Apple fanboys who run there mouth in the comment sections on tech websites? Of course but not nearly as bad as android fans.

For example, take a look at techno buffalo. There comment section is trolled by the SAME android fanboys and will comment on any apple or android story and revert it to Apple being in superior and anyone who likes Apple.. Has to be an iSheep.

It's pretty ridiculous. I have tried several times commenting only to come back and see my comments being attacked. I have nothing against android devices. I had the G1, my touch 3G, Evo 4g before sprint finally offered the 4s. I went to a galaxy s5 for a week a few months ago and really disliked it. Went back to my 5s.

It's all about preference but for some reason, many, not all, but many android users can't fathom why people would use an iPhone which is spec wise 2 years old.

I've always said.. Experience. iOS is not perfect, but it runs really well.. And doesn't require the latest specs. I enjoy the is tightly interpreted and the Apple closed system has its benefits as well.

When I claim its preference, the attack starts with claiming my intelligence is at question. It's usually the same guys in the same comment sections on techno buffalo. Honestly it makes me not want to even visit websites like that which have been hijacked in the forums and comments with the same people attacking anyone who likes Apple.

Insecurity ?

People that notice the difference in human behavior based on purchased material are generally dealing with their own mental issues, mostly stereotyping.

A material object doesn't actually change human behavior. If I'm an angry Android user and I get an iPhone....I'm an angry iPhone user. The iPhone isn't magical, it doesn't change the internal wiring of my brain.

You just aren't noticing the angry iPhone users out there because of your own bias. They are saying things you want to hear so you over look them. Plus you are generally looking at things that revolve around what you like so you see the people that criticize those things. Go look at things YOU don't like and you'll see people saying the same angry things that you less angrily agree with.

I enjoy Android and iOS a like and I see just as many angry people that are very vocal on both sides.

That could well be true especially considering some people feel obliged to back one manufacturer over the other in the recent patent wars. I would imagine Samsung consumers have more reason to dislike Apple and the marketing from the company reflects this. I've heard so many times that Apple is a cult and we are being forced to like what they say is right but some Samsung owners don't half soak up the anti Apple marketing from what I have seen. If that's not failing to see the irony in their own propaganda I don't know what is? :)

See, once again. A lot of this is based on your own person bias.

You are looking at Apple tech ads then feel you see more Android fans attacking. If you only read reviews of Android products then you only see Apple fans attacking and thus feel there is more of them.

Here is my example which means absolutely nothing.

This is MACrumors which has an alternative phone OS section. So obviously there will be quite a few Android users here. And we see them get defensive.

On android forums that have NO Apple/Mac/iOS sections at all the Apple fans get just as defensive. There is no reason for them to even be there at all yet there are just as many waiting to pounce on anyone that mutters the word Apple in an even slightly negative light.

Of course most people here wouldn't know that therefore assume it doesn't exist and say "Oh its Android users with the problem, I'm tooootallyyyy open minded, I know exactly how human nature works durrhh durrrhhh durrhhh"

Before anyone else comments about it being mostly Android users look at the iPhone 6 vs 6+ threads. They same applied and still do to the Mini vs full size iPad.

I agree with the OP. Apple iPhones (it's not as bad with laptops or desktops) bring out the ugly in a few of the Android users I know and hang out with. Definitely not all of them, but there are a few that treat the very idea of the iPhone with distain. I've joked that the next world war would likely start over Android/Apple!

There is most certainly something to it which inspired the OP to post this question in the first place. I think that our phones have become a very personal thing now. People are attaching themselves with these devices - and it "says" something about them.

The posts here saying that it's all in our heads are both true and false, but not adding much to the discussion because the are pretending not to know this exists at all. Any Psyc majors want to chime in?

No, I would have to disagree.

You see there are many Apple fans and android fans that read any article on any technology. I for one enjoy reading anything related to Apple android Windows or BlackBerry. Anything that is really technology driven or relevant. I enjoy technology regardless of who makes it. However I do have a preference.

Just as everyone else has their preference as well, but it's one thing to attack a certain group of people based on their preference. I have seen from A number of text sites where it's usually the android or Samsung and attacking Apple fans but we've yet to even comment on the story. Regardless if it's an android or an Apple Story. I find that ridiculous.

I really could not care what someone buys. Yet these guys seem to care when I resent, and judge their intelligence on their purchases.

----------

They don't. Not where I live. Is this happening in high school?

I have to wonder the same thing if this is a bunch of teens who take it from high school into the comment section of these tech blogs websites.

I have to wonder if the comment section on these tech websites, is basically what happening in high school with people and their devices? Definitely insecurity.

Because some Apple users live so far up Apple's *******, that they believe it's their duty to bash every competitor even if that competitor is superior.

I suggest you guys read other tech sites like CNET, BGR, Cult of Android, Techcrunch, Mashable, 9to5 Google... and the rest. The OP is correct. Android fanboys HATE the fact that not everyone loves Android.

I agree that most Android forums that I visit don't seem to have very much animosity amongst themselves. It's when you visit tech sites and forums that are neutral where I see the intense hatred anytime an Apple related article is posted.

Why do some people LITERALLY get SO MAD at iPhone users for liking iPhones?

After 3 Android handsets and a tablet, I have long since left Android (and it's buggines) behind with no present desire to look back. I used to swear by Android and even went as far as to mock Apple fans for merely liking the iPhone, even though I had never owned one at that point in time.
My first iPhone was the 4S and it's been every model iPhone after that since. My experience with a smartphone has never been as good as it has been since converting to iOS. I've owned Windows, BlackBerry's, and Android devices and they allbpale in comparison to the iPhone in terms of stability, fluidity, and plain old esthetics.
Can't wait to have my 6 Plus delivered this Thursday.
No reason for either party to get angry by me merely posting about my experience.

It's because iOS is locked down with restrictions ("what if I want to just drop an MP3 on it?"). You are seen as willingly perpetuating the downfall of freedom in computing, and thus, an enemy of computing and all it stands for, according to many many geeks.

Personally, I appreciate both. Android is good when I want a computer in my pocket. iOS is good when I want an appliance in my pocket.

Appliance isn't a dirty word - it's an alternative way of doing things. I am a >10 year experienced IT technician, I know perfectly well how to unlock a bootloader, flash a ROM, use sed to substitute options en masse in text files at the command line, keep malware off of an Android phone or Windows PC, etc. But I spend all day doing that already, so I do see the merits of a closed system. It is less flexible, but is predictable, dependable and keeps me focused.
I also, perhaps due to how interested I was in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) at college, see the beauty in a system that is easy and enjoyable for people of all skill levels to interact with.

A lot of geeks just don't see it that way - they see it that it's either completely open and flexible, or it's evil / dumbed down / the enemy and must be destroyed before it destroys the other. And not that the two types of computing can coexist just fine.

I went from iPhone to HTC and my geek friend literally cheered and patted me on the back haha. I was just in the mood for a pocket computer at the time and also the bigger screen sizes were in and Apple were still dragging their heels on that. I was also a bit annoyed at how quickly Apple drop update support for previous models (little did I realise how much worse the situation can be with non-Nexus devices on Android). Now that I'm switching back to the iPhone (6) yyyeah I don't think I've witness the extent of his and other geek friends' disappointment yet!

Identification. They are so identified with Android that they take criticism towards "their" OS as a personal attack against themselves as persons. This is a psychological mechanism that often begins with having some insecurity in one's personal emotional life. So you "team up" with something strong, in this case the total number of Android users as a group, backed by a powerful corp like Google - in order to feel stronger and more safe, to feel that one belongs to a strong group. This is a well known survival mechanism.

With iOS being the main competitor to Android, then, Apple is perceived as quite literally the enemy. In extreme cases this grows to actual hate, for those with a particularly strong feeling of insecurity. It's much the same thing as football fans being prepared to use violence against fans of another team, or nationalists wanting to kill citizens of another country based on no rational reason at all. Quite common obviously, and always disturbing at any level.

"Fandroids" hating "iSheep" or vice versa, it's all the same and goes equally both ways. It is at this level that any interesting, constructive discussion in the forums comes to a halt, and petty bickering takes over. The remedy is to notice the anger when it arises, take a moment to look at it and realise that this is after all only about who prefers which phone or OS, and just let it go.

Well said..and true

To some degree it's human nature to divide up into tribes, and psychology shows that once we've made a decision we tend to see things in ways that support that decision. There is almost as much of this kind of thing going on for video game consoles and cars and just about anything you can name. If it's more pronounced with Android fans it may have something to do with the kind of personality that's strongly drawn to Android (and that actively posts online -- the vast majority of Android users are not "fanboys"). I suppose these would be people who value openness, power (as they perceive it, anyway) and customizability over things like user experience and refinement of the hardware. They can't understand why anyone would accept a phone that seems to do less while cost more, and of course anyone who does buy one must be an idiot or a sheep who has been bamboozled by Apple. When they see millions of iPhones getting sold it must be infuriating, since to them it's obvious that there are better, cheaper options that these poor fools are just too stupid to appreciate.

But of course we don't all value the same things. I have an older Android tablet (Nexus 7) and while it's not a bad piece of hardware, I really never warmed up to Android and have no interest in using it when I can use iOS.

Sensed a tad bit of hostility in the part where you ranted about Apple users, while giving your reasonings why people who use iPhones are idiots. Very interesting, very interesting indeed. Thanks for the feed back!!

Never experienced anything like that.

Quit living on internet forums.

Thanks for participating on a internet forum

I like how most Android users that i run into try to convince me why I shouldn't like the iPhone and wasted my money. Some may be right, they're envious? jealous? or?

Why else would they care so much? or even bother to say anything?

I don't care about their android device or what phone they or anyone else uses.

Why do Android users LITERALLY GET SO MAD when iPhone users talk about, and use/like Apple products such as iPhones. I mean, they literally get SO MAD when someone likes a iPhone over a Android device. Oh, and NOTHING makes them more livid as when a iPhone user goes to Android, only to go back to iPhone after a couple weeks, month, or whatever it is. There must be a ailment of sorts for this when someone doesn't like what they like. They LITERALLY GET furious at the thought that someone would like a iPhone over Android. This release of the new iPhone has made it even worse with the haters. They are going to any blog, video, and comment sections just to dog the iPhone. They are spending so much time to read all about something (they think) they hate. It's so interesting to me as to why??? Does anyone have a serious explanation?

Because Apple isn't bringing anything new to the table anymore. It's just one, big, walled ecosystem.

Remember, the majority of Android users were most likely at one point, part of the initial iPhone user base, and only shifted once Apple stopped with the innovation while Google and other hardware makers have continued to experiment.

Personally, I've gone from Apple, to Android and the Note series, to the Blackberry Passport, because those were the avenues which offered what I was looking for - bigger screens, stylus options, customization, security, etc.

As a former fan, it's not that I'm mad at iPhone users for liking iPhones, I'm mad at Apple for resting on their laurels, seemingly to worried that they'll screw things up by being innovative, that they don't even bother. I'm mad at iPhone users for accepting this mediocrity, when Apple could, and should, be pushing the smartphone industry further into the future, and not playing catch-up.
