Analogue output?

They specifically say the new dock is 'all digital' in the keynote so how is it supposed to output analogue audio to speaker docks?

Also the adapter says "This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Video and iPod Out not supported."

Apart from charging and digital iPod audio connection the adapter isn't good for much?

I don't hate the new dock connector (although calling it 'Lightning' is moronic), it's a great idea as the devices get smaller and sometimes a re-design is necessary.

What I *do* hate is the extortionate price of adapters, it's just profiteering on their imposed change, knowing people will have to run out and buy loads of these to suit all the places they use their iPhone.

If it's true that there is no longer any analogue audio out (as indeed seems to be the case), there will be a lot of people who will be annoyed who use large Hi-Fi headphones and have traditionally used the Line-out capability of the current 30pin connector along with a headphone amplifier. If that is taken away I imagine people might be slightly annoyed.

Just found in another thread that it WILL have analogue audio out.

The 'iPod out , is actually to do with showing the iPod interface on car dash displays and that is being replaced with apples new eyes away or whatever it's called!

Presumably the adapter has a DAC in it to convert the digital to analogue which is why it costs so much

I dont hate it.....yet. I will have to see how it holds up. Thats the one thing i liked about the 30 pin connector. It fit snug into the phone and didn't wobble around like ordinary phone chargers that use micro-usb. I never had any problems with pins getting bent or the charger not working, which was a completely different story with old phones I had using micro usb.

Only time will tell, Apple may have constructed it very well.

$29 adaptor....talk about a complete rip off. Thats probably a 2800% mark up.

I'm guessing it's a great snug fit. Watching the video where they insert it looks like it snaps into place and if you look at the connector itself, there are indents in the side of it which will serve as a locking/retention mechanism.

I like the new connector, it's long overdue. I really really like that it's double sided. I hate flipping around while trying to connect it in the dark or in the car. What I hate is how they are rewarding their customers who have invested in charges, car kits, docks, radios, speakers, etc. but screwing them over on adaptor prices. I'm just glad I won't need a single one. My car is USB and I don't own any docks.

It's my understanding the memory in the iPhone isn't fast enough to take advantage of the Thunderbolt connection so it isn't work the cost in R&D a cord. A thunderbolt cord is a relatively complicated piece. I don't have a massive issue with a $50 TB cord like I do with a $30 Lightning adaptor.

It isn't a matter of "hating" the new connector as much as it is annoyance at having 9 years worth of accessories that now either need to be replaced or need an adapter to continue working with the new iPhone. In my case, I have very few, so I'll probably get one adapter for the few situations when I need it. Apple needed to replace the adapter at some point. Now is as good a time as any to do so.

Thing is though, how long do people expect accessories to last and be compatible with future tech? 9 years is an eternity in the tech industry.

I hate it because I already own like 10 30 pin dock connectors and now I would have to build another collection of the lightning cable...

Personally I like the new dock connector. It's long overdue.

I'm all for making the connector smaller if it frees up more room inside, which it has done.

It's not as if people with docks are going to be stuck, there's adaptors available to allow them to continue using them.

This. I'm liking it too. As you said it has freed up some space inside it. It's reversible too!

I agree that the 30-pin is past it's prime, and I welcome the new tech. However, it comes with compromises. Most I can tolerate. Losing the ability to hook it up to my car, with full iPod display support, is totally bumming me out. Since the adapter will be useless in that respect, I have no need to spend the money on it.

That's entirely true, and Phil Schiller reassured people yesterday that this is Apple's connector for years to come. However, the fact remains that sooner or later ports change and people's accessories need to be replaced. Whenever it does happen, people get annoyed at first. To use another example, USB was a massive improvement over serial and parallel ports. However, some perfectly good printers and mice had to be replaced (or people had to buy adapters) when USB-equipped computers came out.

I'm cringing at the thought of how much it's going to cost to replace all the 30 pin cables my wife and I use. 1 in each car, 1 at each job, and one attached to our Mac. That's $100 just in cables. It would be worse if we get the $30 adapters. I really thing Apple should include one with the phone. I'll trade out my ear pods or whatever they are called now for a 30 pin adapter.

Everything I've owned for years would require a $30 adapter, I believe video out is no longer an option through the dock connector, and it looks fragile.

I don't mind that they did it, but I don't like that Apple calls it a "feature". It's a dock connector.

It's a feature in that it allows them to make the phone smaller. Over time, it will be more flexible. I'm guessing the "adaptive" design will let them add USB 3.0 at some point.

Just to correct you here, almost all of the accessories made pre-iPhone don't work with the iPhone. Some do, but certain aspects like power won't work because of the pin change from firewire to USB. This happened back in 2004, and there wasn't nearly as big of a fuss as this new connector is getting. That is mainly because most people who bought iPods were after the switch to USB.

So basically I would say most of the accessories that people use every day are no older than 2005. While the vast majority were probably not purchased until after the iPhone came out. This basically puts most of the accessories out there at no older than 2007.

Basically when you say '9 years worth of accessories' you should really say '5 years worth of accessories.' That isn't a huge difference, but being ignorant to the fact that Apple has and will continue to evolve their standards as needed is just silly.

Again this isn't directed at you, just meant to be informative to people who seem to think Apple should never ever change it (because they already have a few times).

It seems to me to be an utter failure.

It's smaller size has been wasted making the phone thinner rather than providing a better battery, and nobody seemed very interested in a thinner size anyway.
It delivers no speed improvements.
It locks out third party cables in future with it's ID chip.
Making it even more proprietary.
It's dropped the pins that made the old dock better than USB such an analogue out.
It has a longer, thinner section to be inserted than the old one which would seem to be more prone to breakage.
The adaptors are badly designed and incredibly expensive, and won't even work in many cases due to the removal of the analogue audio pins.
The removal of analogue audio means speakers in future that include a dock will need to be more expensive.
EDIT: Oh, also forgot that it seems like it doesn't have enough pins to enable an HDMI adaptor, and one is conspicuous by its absense in the store.

Lots of downsides, no advantages.

Apple totally sucks with their changing connectors all the time. I have the StylewriterII and I can't even plug it in anymore. Talk about cash grab!

i like the thing a lot BUT there are growing pains. growing pains that may cost a fair bit of money! the adapters should be cheap to keep people happy.

Like others, I believe the change is overdue. That said, I think there would be less complaining if they had gone to micro-USB like almost every other phone instead of something proprietary.
