Simple: People are too cheap and feel like it's worthless. What they fail to realize is

If they just buy one of the converters... they can use ALL of their old docks and chargers with it. Folks are moreso concerned about their cases, which are void anyway since the phone is longer.

I'm cool with the new connector. I don't really have any accessories that will need replacing, so I'm not even going to need an adaptor.

I love the new smaller charger, but like the rest of the fanboys here, I have a ton invested in 30 pin cables & accessories. If I only had to buy one adapter for $29, that is one thing, but I have chargers...

- In my car
- In my wife's car
- At my office
- In my home office
- In my kitchen
- In my bedroom
- On at least a dozen other docks or accessories

Take most of the docks & accessories out of the equation & that means that I either need to carry one adapter with me at all times (impractical), I need to replace all the cables with lightning connectors (impractical as my wife does not plan to upgrade her iPhone 4), or I need to buy 7+ of them. At $29 a pop, I could buy a brand new iPhone 5 with that scratch.

Only reason for me not really feeling it because now I'm forced to start over my collection of usb chargers due to the change.

One for home, one for office, one for car. You should be able to make do with that. If you are switching cars for the day, grab the one from your car and put it in your wife's car. Inconvenient, sure, but worth $29? You decide.

My car has an aux jack, so no worries.

It's beneficial in some many ways.

Think about how happy all of these accessory company's are right now? They get to sell there product twice!

From a business stand point, Apple just boosted the accessory industry x 2.

It's a new reason for everyone to go out and buy new accessories they may or may not already own. Its a win-win for everyone.

On a side note, I'd be interested in seeing if Apple seeded this connector with larger, trust-worthy accessory company's to allow them to be prepared for launch day. I understand that's like pissing in the ocean when considering the security, and confidentiality of the product, but shows that Apple cares about those who support there products.

I wonder why nobody thought about the possibility of a 3rd party creating a similar adaptor and selling at a much cheaper price

Heck, most of them should be able to make a cable out of the adaptor, like Lightning <-> 30pin or Lightning <-> USB.

Though i'm not 100% that both the jack and plug are available in the market, or is apple the only one producing them.

Mainly because everyone has docks and cords and other accesories laying around and they don't want to buy adapters or new ones which is understandable.

My girlfriend wants the iPhone 5 because she likes the new connector, she think it looks cool haha that's her main reason.

If I'm willing to spend hundreds a year upgrading to all the latest and greatest Apple stuff (I cycle both my iPads and my iPhones with each new upgrade) I can't honestly complain about the cost of a few new accessories and cables.

If Apple had a history of changing these things all the time, I could see some frustration, but upgrading the connector to something more modern for the first time in basically 10 years... I think everyone is just gonna need to roll with it.

It isn't a matter of "hating" the new connector as much as it is annoyance at having 9 years worth of accessories that now either need to be replaced or need an adapter to continue working with the new iPhone. In my case, I have very few, so I'll probably get one adapter for the few situations when I need it. Apple needed to replace the adapter at some point. Now is as good a time as any to do so.

Added to this is my complaint that the adapters are already pushed out for October delivery. Surely they could have anticipated the massive demand for these things, given the number of current iPhone users and the number of anticipated upgraders.

Edit: Unless, of course, it's not a lack-of-supply issue and Oct. is when they were always slated to ship. In which case, that's just dumb.

Errr... except for customers.

And those accessory manufacturers might not be so happy when they find out that they have to pay mandatory licence fees or be locked out of using the dock even for playing music, as Lightning appears to have a security chip blocking access otherwise.

The licencing for the dock connector to do anything apart from music is notoriously terrible and incredibly expensive, so that doesn't bode well.

It was like that with the Thunderbolt FireWire Adapter, when "ships in July" meant it was released around 11:59pm in Cupertino on July 31st. My guess is that the main products are high on Tim Cook's priority but peripherals are not. Hopefully that will improve.

The connector never bothered me, I actually liked the old one, having a new one doesn't bother me either, I'm just worried about the accessories and stuff.

I already ordered 2 of the cables. Wondering how hard they will be to come by after launch... After that, I will wait for a decent quality knock off. I had found a really good one on Amazon that was affordable. I'll be watching for them to update the design.

Licensing Fee's are no surprise for any retail manufacture. That's just the way it goes. Totally off-topic but my line of work we use a off-the-shelf parts cleaner in massive quantities, and because of our high usage, we have to buy EPA Credits. So basically my point is there is a fee for everything, sugar-coat it all you want, you're going to pay up in the end.

If you want it, or need it, you're going to buy it. Referencing the average track record of a Apple customer, I think its safe to say, its not going to stop anyone from replacing out of date hardware.

Got to spend money to make money!

Another side note, I was planning on buying the iPad, however tossed that idea once I found out about the new connector. So I wont be buying the iPad, or any other Apple product for that matter, until it receives the connector.

Call it a double edged sword.

I would just buy the USB-to-Lightening cable at $19 for your chargers. And then re-evaluate your need to have a charger in every room in your house.:p

Err... there wasn't a fee yesterday. Or the nine years before that.

So yes, it would have been quite a surprise.

On it's own? Probably not. Will it contribute along with various other things? Quite possibly.

RIM and Microsoft were both invincible once.

This. I'm liking it too. As you said it has freed up some space inside it. It's reversible too!

Yeah forgot about it been able to be inserted any way around. The amount of times I've messed around down the side of my table trying to plug in the 30 pin connector and it been the wrong way around, thankfully from next Friday this will be a thing of the past :D

Yep. I've done that a lot too. When in the middle of the night for example if I get a call I'll need to unplug the iPhone. Also the new dock will be much easier to when in a car, you'll no longer need to faff about with the wire!!

sometimes I really think half of you guys don't read what you post & if you do then idk what to say. apple ether makes adaptor or another company will make 1 and at the end of the day, you will have an adapter! now I don't like new charger because old one went with everything of mine. all my iPods, iPads, iPhones had same car and wall chargers. If I went somewhere and battery was low I can easily ask someone with an apple product and boom use their charger. I think adapters will eventually should be free! someone sue them for monopoly just like the cases and well get them for free. Lol

If they lowered the adapter price by 10 dollars I don't think it would be as big as a deal, at least to me. These adapters look like they cost pennies to make with a mark up a hotel manager would be proud of.

The adaptor is included for FREE so not a big deal.

Should have been USB 3 speed at least, dont see the point of changing it if its the same speed...

There are good things about this change and there are bad things. I agree that we will find the connector on the cable end to be very fragile. It's in effect a pcb card edge. it's going to break if you torque it. The broken end will be stuck in your phone. I'm sure that is why there is no phone dock, there is no way to make a low price plastic dock using this design that will not break off all the time. You'll see more expensive speaker docks as announced during the keynote where they can provide a more stable support for the phone. Then there is the issue of all of the cables and accessories that people already have. Not sure how well the adapters are going to work out. Change is always going come and I did find it reassuring that Apple stated that this will be the connector for some time going forward.
