As a current Sprint subscriber, I can say the speeds are abysmal in my area (Abq, NM) with my Evo 4g. Strangely, we have wimax here despite it not being listed last I checked. I can get around 6mbps on wimax (yay my battery lasts five hours now) or I can opt to have my phone last through the day and get between 200 and 500 kbps on 5 bar 3G.
When I first moved to Sprint from AT&T about four years ago, I got about 3mbps on my... what was that thing? Samsung slider phone, android 3.5" screen from around four years ago... Anyway, I found that perfectly acceptable for 3G but since then the speeds have just been going down and down. Last time I was visiting in Portland, I speed tested my 3G at 500kbps in the same neighborhoods I was getting 3mbps four years ago with a far inferior phone.
Basically, my Sprint service has been slowly declining over the years and I find it unacceptable. Now that AT&T offers that 1gb shared plan (since I'm almost always in a wifi bubble except when driving I rarely use more than 60-70mb a month) I've found a plan that offers everything I need for about thirty bucks less a month than Sprint.
Also, the "premium data" fee on Sprint bugs the hell out of me. Anything but dumb phones increase your rates by $10 per phone. It was originally a 4G fee but Sprint decided crap 3G speeds should pay it as well. I mean the PR fiasco of charging extra for 4G when they had it in just a few cities went so well, why not just charge everyone ten bucks extra for slower speeds?
Yes, I'm quite bitter about Sprint continually screwing their old customers when we're all that's keeping them afloat. Ah well, I got two years of excellent service from Sprint before they went stupid.
