As a current Sprint subscriber, I can say the speeds are abysmal in my area (Abq, NM) with my Evo 4g. Strangely, we have wimax here despite it not being listed last I checked. I can get around 6mbps on wimax (yay my battery lasts five hours now) or I can opt to have my phone last through the day and get between 200 and 500 kbps on 5 bar 3G.

When I first moved to Sprint from AT&T about four years ago, I got about 3mbps on my... what was that thing? Samsung slider phone, android 3.5" screen from around four years ago... Anyway, I found that perfectly acceptable for 3G but since then the speeds have just been going down and down. Last time I was visiting in Portland, I speed tested my 3G at 500kbps in the same neighborhoods I was getting 3mbps four years ago with a far inferior phone.

Basically, my Sprint service has been slowly declining over the years and I find it unacceptable. Now that AT&T offers that 1gb shared plan (since I'm almost always in a wifi bubble except when driving I rarely use more than 60-70mb a month) I've found a plan that offers everything I need for about thirty bucks less a month than Sprint.

Also, the "premium data" fee on Sprint bugs the hell out of me. Anything but dumb phones increase your rates by $10 per phone. It was originally a 4G fee but Sprint decided crap 3G speeds should pay it as well. I mean the PR fiasco of charging extra for 4G when they had it in just a few cities went so well, why not just charge everyone ten bucks extra for slower speeds?

Yes, I'm quite bitter about Sprint continually screwing their old customers when we're all that's keeping them afloat. Ah well, I got two years of excellent service from Sprint before they went stupid.

Because many people have experienced noticeably slower data speeds compared to ATT & VZW. It usually depends on the area you're in as to how well the service performs.

When I lived near Tampa, a huge city, I could not get near 1 meg download. Now in North Carolina, I can't get near .5 meg down. Sprint sucks.

Come September, or whenever I can I make it in, I'm going to Verizon. Sprint's 3G makes my iPhone useless. I can barely, if ever, download ONE email before I get tired of waiting and just close the mail app. And forget about updating an app. No way. Hell, I can't even get the app store to tell me if there any updates because the 3G speeds are so slow.

jesus what did you run it 24 hours a day for a month? I can't think of any other way to get 21gb in a month at sprint speeds.

this was like 3 years ago when i was getting 1.3mb all the time, and streaming netflix and heck I even gamed on the connection.

it added up quickly

So I guess what I'm asking is why is Sprint always talked about so negatively compared to AT&T & VZW?
Situations, preferences, coverage, etc vary. That's why. If Sprint works great for you, good for you. Don't assume that what works best for you works best for everyone no matter what the topic.

Here is what i get at my house in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Also to point out i have to go outside to talk on the phone, and then i still have a 75% dropped call rate.

Good grief Oakmhcky21, I thought my service was bad. Mine is great compared to yours. Any reason you're not already off Sprint? I'd think they'd have the decency to let you out of the contract for service THAT bad.

Okay I get it,coverage maps are a little weak & customer service isn't the BEST,(but who's is? And their Internet service agents are FAR more helpful). But their prices and unlimited NON THROTTLED data roped in our family of 5,& in Baton Rouge Louisiana I've never experienced slow or unusable data speeds, even in the country parts. Will I be streaming Pandora with no buffering? Heck no,but I can load a web page pretty quick.

So I guess what I'm asking is why is Sprint always talked about so negatively compared to AT&T & VZW?

because speeds are so terrible people can't even download 1 megabyte with such an unlimited precious plan.

The theme here is that Sprint is slower in more places then verizon anf att.
So you need to do research beforehand. For me sprint is good. Just depends on where you live.

I get an average of 1mb/s which is what average CDMA speed is.

Come to think about it, if my Evo 4G's battery life wasn't 3-4 hours without any usage (just email pushes etc) on WiMax, I'd be very happy with Sprint's service. Both cities I frequent (ABQ and Portland) have wimax and now they went and tossed out every phone that has wimax.

That's kinda like AT&T releasing their 4G LTE phones without HSPA+ support. No one would be happy with that at all. Seems odd to roll out all the wimax 4G and then have nothing that can use it. I'm guessing there isn't anything built that can support the CDMA, wimax AND LTE which is kinda a bummer for me at least. Sprint would be a great network for me at least if that was offered.

Sprint is knocked because they deserve it. Worst network of all the top-tier carriers hands down. I know there are exceptions - after all, cellular has always been location, location, location. But Sprint pretty much sucks everywhere. I avoid Sprint and any resellers like the plague. Cheap(er) yes but you get what you (don't) pay for.

I just moved about a two weeks ago. It was about as bad where i was living but i was able to make/recieve phone calls. I will be switching to verizon when the 5 comes out.

----------

Also, i get those speeds on sprint, all my verizon buddies get full service 4G at my house...
