why are people so against just using iTunes to update it? problem solved.

I suppose not ALOT of people know this. Iu will be surprised how little some people don't use iTunes syncing (myself included) heck I don even use iTunes anymore.

I guess people forgot about it over the years with iCloud and WiFi syncing but it's always the best way to update, especially with major releases.

It makes perfect sense that OTA updates require localized storage space to unpack the update and shuffle files around since the whole process is confined just to the device. Once it's done it cleans up after itself and gives you the space back (minus the added space eaten up by the new OS).

Updating through iTunes means your computer is doing all the shuffling and unpacking and just sending the files to the phone. It's probably using close to the same amount of storage on your computers hard drive to temporarily unpack and shuffle you just don't notice because a few gigs on a modern computer is a non-issue.

I haven't done an update over iTunes since iOS 5 introduced OTA. I think for the vast majority OTA works just fine and the people having trouble and reporting it on tech sites like this are the vocal minority.

The point of OTA was for people without computers to be able to update the OS via the device itself. Maybe they should reduce the footprint needed, or not sell devices with 8GB of storage.

Or at the very least change that message to clarify why so much space is needed. Instead of just saying "this 1.1GB update needs 5.XGB to install" and causing confusion, say something like "5.XGB is needed temporarily as part of the update process, you will gain this space back when the update is complete. If you do not have the space available update on iTunes instead."

Much less confusion.

i cant backup my phone at all, i deleted every app i could possible and it still wont allow me to back-up and im not purchasing new space, this is ridiculous

This is precisely why it's ridiculous that Apple is selling the iPhone 6 starting at 16GB. Several people I know just aren't updating to iOS 8 because they don't want to mess with having to clear a bunch of stuff off their phone. I don't remember the iOS 7 upgrade being quite this bad, was it? Apple doesn't want to fragment their install base.

How many photos/videos do you have on the phone?

App data takes little to no space. It's photos and videos that fill up icloud.

check your camera roll size in cloud backup. you will be surprised

16 gb and 8 gb folks are getting trolled.

Don't you think guys that iOS is getting larger and larger year by year that we can call ios 8 as a bloated operating system?

It's no different than Samsung's touch wiz loaded Android update file.

Do you know anyone else with a computer? You can use any itunes to backup and update your iPhone. You could probably even go to the Apple Store.

yes i do, my sister just recieved a new 1 she has a 5s also, ill be glad when the next minor update rolls out, hopefully they fix that and this photo album

Well for me when I go to iTunes and click on "Check for Update" it says I am already on the latest OS - which happens to be iOS 8 b5. I guess I can download the update file and force it but I am remote and that isn't as easy as it seems at the moment.

I just put mine into safe mode and restored.

I took a pic before and after installing ios 8 on my air 16 gb...

Before: 12.8 total, free 9.6

After: 11.7 total, free 8.1

So I lost more that 2 gigs...

Hmm? Isn't that less than 2 gigs?

What's up with that? There's a 1.1 GB difference in total, and 1.5 GB difference in the free. Where's the other 0.4 GB?

[Edit: well, wherever that other 0.4 GB is, the key is that you have 1.5 GB less free :( ]

Yes, I lost space in total and in free space apartments... I feel robbed #

Oh, I think I see where you're getting > 2 gigs lost. You're saying you lost 2.6 GB because you added 1.1 GB used and you lost 1.5 GB free = 2.6 GB?

That's not how it works. You can focus on the free space number...effectively, you've lost 1.5 GB of space. Don't know where the other 0.4 GB went or if you an get it back.

Hope that reduces the sting a little...

Yep I understand losing 1 gig of free space, but I don't get losing also 1 gig of the "other" space...

I'm also puzzled by why people who already have computers don't just use iTunes, especially if they have a lower capacity device. It's like some people have an allergic reaction to anything involving wires, even though wired updates are usually more reliable and faster.

The large storage requirement for the iOS 8 update is a safeguard just in case things go wrong during the download and installation. It keeps the old OS intact, so that the device can still work if the installation fails. Imagine the uproar if Apple chose to purge the old OS copy at the beginning of the download process, leaving people with bricked devices if the download and extraction was interrupted at any point.

If you're short on storage, OTA updates are fine for point updates, not for major iOS revisions. If someone doesn't have a computer or doesn't want to use iTunes or gets rashes when handling wires, you can go to an Apple Store and have them handle the iOS update.

FWIW, Ars Technica's iOS 8 review indicates that the OS itself uses up an additional 740 MB to 1.03 GB of space compared to iOS 7.1.2.

"Other" can entail any number of different things. A lot of it is just cache that builds up over normal usage. But, a lot of it is also junk data that cannot be purged unless you restore the device back to factory settings. A lot of the "Other" space is taken up by failed installations and downloads, or other garbage left behind by apps and iOS itself.

As noted above, Ars Technica noted that iOS 8 takes up an additional 740 MB to 1.03 GB of space. This comparison was done using identical devices restored to factory settings and fresh installations.

On my iPhone 5 16GB model, under usage section. It shows used 5.9 and available 6.8 and after doing a simple math, I come up with 12.7GB. This means 3.3 GB is used internally by apple. Is it just me or other have same thing.

iOS 8 noticed that you now have less user space then before? My 32gb iPhone 5S user accessible storage is now 26.8gb and my iPad Mini Gen 2 now has 26.3gb and after a reboot, I lost an extra 500mb to go down to the current 26.3. from after update of 26.8gb.
