It could also be because the A5 has been in circulation over a year. It has been produced in mass and there may be hundreds of thousands of these things laying around. Its easier to stick on older readily available part into a new device than it is to ramp up production on a new chip that is used in a device that is sold out or in short supply.

Yeah I got a feeling if the iPhone 5 came out in summer like the iphone 4 did, the new iPod would have a A6 chip.

Why even complain? The iPhone 3GS is still fast and it's not even A4. It's not even A-anything.

And yet the iPod touch has A5, much faster than the A4, that is much faster than the 3GS, you're still complaining?

It's not like the A5 is as slow as hell, is it?

That is honestly not the reason.
Your average consumer knows nothing about processors or anything like that.

I know, but I know many people who are average and who just want whatever is the newest thing and who are like op, don't want a 4s with a larger screen, a worse camera, and no black screen without choosing the black back

First world problems

To be honest i'm starting to wonder whether the touch will be phased out in the next two years with all signs pointing to an iPad Mini and the increasing trend of going larger with screens sizes.

Highly unlikely. You still won't be able to fit an iPad Mini in a pocket or strap it on an armband.

The market for small PMPs still exists. It's smaller than it used to be, but it's still a moneymaker.

I know the iPhone 5 has the A6 but couldn't the iPod touch 5G at least get the A5X?

Because of chip size.

After the 3rd generation iPad came out, Apple began manufacturing a new version of the iPad 2 with a smaller version of the A5 chip.

That is what they are using here.

Apple is a business and wants your money. At this point they couldn't care if they lost one consumer. The ipod touch is the kid's device basically. Why would they put it at the same specs as the current iPhone which is basically their masterpiece?

All the adults on my family, including my 70 year old mother, have iPod touches. I don't think any of us consider it a "kid's device." The kids only rate a nano.

Because Apple wants us to purchase the iPhone 5 and not the iPt5.

There are a ton of people like myself who arent interested in the iPhone 5 and have another phone but would like the same processor and camera thats in the 5. Not a deal breaker though, I will still get the IPT5

one example isn't it enough to set it off. Tons of kids have an iPod Touch and I've seen mostly adults with the iPad. Teens and people in their 20's - 40's have been using any of the 3. It caters to people who don't need or want a phone which it's biggest demographic IS kids.

Business Strategy

Apple did not put the A6 chip on the iPod Touch 5th generation for the following reasons (at least my speculation):

1. Maintain its pricing structure for the iPod Touch - the A6 chip is the fastest chip that Apple is currently producing. If Apple placed the A6 chip on the iPod Touch 5th generation, the pricing structure would have to change - higher prices would have to be charged for the iPod Touch. Apple does not want to lose the main market that purchases its iPod Touch. Thus, putting the A5 chip on the iPod Touch 5th generation makes more sense.

2. Controlling the limited supply of the A6 chip - since the A6 chip is fairly new and there is limited supply of this chip (at least when the iPhone 5 was launched), Apple wanted to make sure that it used that A6 chip on the product that would net it the most profit - the iPhone 5. Thus, the A6 chip went on the iPhone 5, a product that caters to a different market than the iPod Touch.

3. Keeping a smooth sales flow of its products - after the A6 chip matures and supply grows, Apple will begin putting that chip into its other devices like the iPod Touch, iPad, and mini iPad; consumers will be happy and will be looking forward to the next best thing from Apple. By this time, Apple will be more than half way done working on its next chip (A7?). Thus, the cycle will begin again. The A7 will go into the iPhone (Apple's flagship product), then gradually move onto the iPads and iPod Touch.

Kids, adults both have iPod touches.
