I just don't see the need for another device. I already have an iPhone for when I'm on the go. An iPad for when I'm at home. A MacBook Pro for when I need to do some serious work and an iPod classic for music when I'm on long journeys.

then don't buy it, it isn't for you any way, apple is going after all the people that can't afford the 499 iPad, this thing will be in the 200$ range, well within reach of the MILLIONS of people that can't afford the larger iPad, don't you people get it????

That poster you quoted was just saying why *he* didn't need a 7" iPad, not saying anything about why other people might or might not need/want one.

Obviously, IF Apple came out with a $200 tablet, then that would make it affordable to many more people. But considering that the *iPod touch* currently starts at $199, well, I'm just skeptical about what kind of features/quality Apple can offer at that price point.

I was addressing why I won't get one, not why there shouldn't be one. Basic comprehension skills would've made that obvious.

Simple... Fear.

Fear of what?

It's not like our iPads or iPhones will suddenly stop functioning on launch day. Some of us just choose not to get our expectations so high that we find ourselves disappointed when the imaginary device is not what we expected or is never introduced at all.

I'd love to buy a buy a teleportation device and a time machine when they're released this October. I just hope they come in cherry red or I'm not buying one!

If a 7 to 8 inch iPad becomes available I will be ordering as soon as possible. I want something lighter and easier to hold than my iPad 3. It's honestly why I ordered a Nexus 7 and I've been a consumer of all things Apple for the last ten years.

That size and form factor is very important to me.

I want a 7" iPad. The entire point to me is the reduced size. I WANT smaller size, lighter weight, and better portability.

I DON'T want a cheap product. I want a premium tablet in 7" size. I am willing to pay more than $200 for it. I don't know why everyone says it has to be $200. Plastic pieces of crap of with laggy processors and no iOS app store are $200. The iPad Mini can be priced between those and the full iPad.

I don't care if you and "all your friends" only want 10 inches. I am not you nor one of your friends. There are others like me. The market is large, and people's needs and wants are varied enough to support multiple iPad sizes.

It is not an either/or proposition, there will still be 10" iPads for sale.

A $200 price point is enticing to people on the fence about tablets, but I think your right and the issue that keeps getting overlooked in the price wars is that there's a significant amount of people who want a smaller iPad REGARDLESS of price. People who buy Apple products tend to care more about quality over saving money.

While this may be true, I've yet to see any data in this thread (or anybody in a position to have access to the sort of data) that would actually support this conclusion. Stuff pulled out of nowhere and anecdotes about what a few people on MR want don't count, obviously.

Like the above, for example. Who actually knows how much 'people who buy Apple products' are willing to spend for a 7" iPad, and how would this affect Apple's decisions? Truisms about 'Apple consumers aren't as price-sensitive' doesn't mean anything.

No data? I made two points, (A) the market it large, and (B) there is room in a market that size for additional size iPads.

(A) There IS data that says the market is large, in the tens to hundreds of millions. Tablets are on track to exceed desktop PC sales by next year.

(B) Granted there isn't a LOT of data here, but reading in any forum about the 7" size and you will see plenty of defenders. Secondly, here is a MR poll showing 55% yes to 7". Third, Kindle Fire has sold millions and it doesn't even have a decent processor, app store, or user experience. (And all the stories about the infamous drop-off in sales turned out to be incorrect.) Fourth, to believe an entire customer base of that size, a size that will exceed that of desktop PCs, only wants 10" is extremely limited thinking.

You cannot possibly convince me that in a market of that size, which is still growing, that there is no room for a small, lighter, less expensive, and more portable iPad. Whether or not it is what you want is not relevant; these are very desirable traits to many people.

"Tablets are selling in the millions" isn't evidence for the claim "There is a market for Apple to make a 7" tablet at the price for which they would have to charge for their business to remain optimal" .

You can't seriously cite an on-line non-scientific poll as evidence for what a company should to with billions of dollars, it's stupid.

I already said MR anecdotes are not evidence for your claims, by definition.

The Kindle Fire selling doesn't mean it's profitable for Apple to make a 7" iPad at the price it would cost them etc.

Finally, I never said that such a customer base 'only wants 10"', only that "wow look at all the people who buy tablets, there is therefore definitely a market for Apple to do X" would get you booted from making business decisions pretty quickly.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything. There may very well be such a market, and it's irrelevant what I want (you'll notice I never even brought up my preferences). The point is that you, ActionableMango, haven't given sufficient evidence to convince anybody (who doesn't already want to believe it) that such a market exists and neither has anyone else in the thread.

PS italics aren't an argument

I posted my belief and opinion, based on knowledge that seems logical and sensible enough for me. I did not realize on MR all opinions had to be based on scientific polls. My mistake.

Oh. I thought when you posted something like

The market is large, and people's needs and wants are varied enough to support multiple iPad sizes.

that we could ask whether your opinions and claims are based on facts. I thought you were making an argument, supported by evidence, and we could see whether your reasoning was valid and evidence was strong. But you're just saying "It's my opinion, [based on nothing substantive] that Apple should make this thing". If I wanted to know what your opinion on this was worth, I'd look at the evidence and your reasoning, and having done that, I think my point stands.

I did not realize on MR all opinions had to be based on scientific polls.

Nobody said they did. I just said that the poll doesn't support your claim.
