All over I see people saying how there is no need for a 7' iPad. Honestly a smaller iPad would be great. Because some people like to carry their tablets around and 9.7 is too big for some people. And everyone keeps comparing a 7inch iPad to the ipod touch. These are two totally complete things. If someone wanted a 7inch iPad they wouldn't buy a ipod touch right? And what about children? A parent might want to give their child a iPad but maybe a smaller one. Also Steve Jobs said" there is no good 7inch tablet", but honestly if apple makes it, then im sure it'll be pretty good. Ok so I know this may sound like a rant more than a question but do you think its a good idea? Why or why not? If so what price range do you think it'll be? I was thinking $300-$350 maybe, just maybe, with a very small percentage, $250

It will be $249 and APPL will barely keep up with demand. This is not a 7" tablet. It will define a new segment. APPL bashing is in vogue. Mainly because when your "The Market" someone will always be trying to "push you off the curb".

Once you see it, you will realize that this product IS a new segment (Think New APPL TV)

Once again. :)

A few of my reasons.

1. Because the 9.7 inch iPad owners see it as a threat over their purchase. Jealousy? Resell value?
2. Steve Jobs said that a smaller iPad makes no sense. People are following a ghost.
3. A cheaper smaller iPad would harm Apple's profits.
4. Some believe fragmentation would be an issue.

I say screw these people. I see no harm to consumers or developers. And a smaller iPad would be an excellent edition especially with Christmas shopping season only a few months away. Yes, a iPad mini will water down the iPad brand. Yes, a iPad mini would hurt Apples profits but it would hurt even more if Apple does nothing against Nexus 7. The 7 inchers really do fall into a separate category and Apple has nothing to show for it.

Heh. Yeah. Steve often dissed stuff that was already well into the Apple pipeline from drawing board to market. Remember he said no one reads any more, who needs a tablet? Yeah. So out pops the iPad in the next round of offerings. So people who are taking his (or his ghost's) comment literally are making a major misinterpretation. And I, too, don't actually think fragmentation will be a problem. I have found myself sometimes transferring a book onto an iPod touch and popping the fontsize up when I don't feel like carting the iPad around. I make the font big enough so I don't have to move my eyes much to take in the page, and just keep flipping. But, that midsize iPad would be perfect instead, and would fit in most of my handbags, which the iPad does not.

I would never give up my iPad at this point. Cooking apps. Magazines. Movies. Books... I would never give up my iPod touch either (although i mostly use it for watching downloaded movies and TV series). And forget giving up the iPhone, it's my computing device of choice when my laptop is not around. But I would love love love to have that midsize iPad for books and slightly easier-on-eyes surfing. I bet that I'm so far from unique in liking that size for a tablet that Apple will sell hundreds of millions of them, as well as hang onto the fullsize tablet market with the iPad.

I would very happily buy a 7.85" iPad.

Me too. I wear a lab coat at work. My iPad does not fit in the pockets of the lab coat. However, the kindle fire fits in it very nicely. I would indeed be very happy to add a smaller iPad for use while at work for work and play.

i want one. i had the original iPad and it was just too big for what i want out of a tablet device. if/when they shrink it down a bit i'll be back on board.

I was laughing along with one of the bloggers on youtube. He said "have you noticed that screen on tablets are getting smaller while mobile phone screens are getting bigger?" Why? Why is this necessary? I don't see why Apple needs to market a smaller iPad when the current one is selling. Selling very well too. I can't think of a reason why I want something smaller than a DVD player. The reason I got an iPad was because the screen was bigger than a portable dvd player. The perks of traveling with a bigger screen is endless.

I love carrying mine around. Inside my Timbuk2 Flex sleeve it feels like a small book. Sorta like a notepad. A lot lighter than bringing along a MBP or MBA. All my notes and info is housed inside this unit. When I need to share, its easy for two people to view at one time. I can't see it getting any smaller.

The same with the iPhone. Too many people thinking it should have a bigger screen etc. I always think of the iPhone like the Motorola Razr. Both changed the game. As did the iPad. And the razor kept its size for years. Only changing the software. The market for iPad accessories and iPad is full. I don't see them adding another gadget to the pool.

This.

Jumbo smartphones put the nail in the coffin for tweeners. And Apple should keep the iPhone the same size for one handed holding and thumb input.

----------

If it comes with 3G/LTE I'll happily buy one. The iPad 3 is just too big to carry around. We need another one in the house anyway.

If wifi only I'll pass.

Too big to carry around? Much better than carrying around a laptop.

All over I see people saying how there is no need for a 7' iPad.

Really? On the first page of this forum alone there's multiple threads full of posters saying the opposite. A few people say there's no need, but to say "it seems no one wants a 7" iPad" you'd have to willfully ignore a lot of activity here.

I remember a million threads of people claiming no one wanted or needed the iPad and it was just a big iPhone and would never sell.

In that case, nobody had seen an iPad. However, we've already seen 7" tablets that have failed to set the world alight (I don't know that the Kindle Fire has been a flop, but it hasn't ruffled Apple's feathers much). Actually picking up a 7" Galaxy Tab in a shop did nothing to dispel the impression that it was 'too big for a phone, too small for a tablet' and that was before world+dog started releasing smartphones with huge screens.

This is not a 7" tablet. It will define a new segment.

Yeah, but that could go either way.

One way: a 7.8" 4:3 tablet might prove to be the perfect size, with enough extra space to make it usable without the size and weight of a full iPad. Could happen: one of the problems with existing 7"ers is the potty 16:9 aspect ratio which is great for watching 16:9 movies but too long and skinny for reading text/webpages, working on documents, typing or, for that matter, watching 4:3 videos.

Other way: a 7.8" tablet might not have the one killer feature of 7" tablets: the ability to fit it in a coat pocket.

Why does it seems no one wants a 7" ipad?

Maybe because no one actually wants one? :)

Sure there are some it might benefit, but most iPad users (like myself) bought it because of its current size. I do not want a smaller, widescreen aspect ratio, device, and most current iPad users probably don't either. And if you happen to own an iPad and an iPhone (which I bet a lot, if not most, here do), then you're really not likely to need a 7" model.

Being rational about a non-existent apple product is a waste of time because people out here work backwards. They listen to a proposed problem and if Apple doesn't make a solution then they create excuses about how that product SHOULDN'T exist.

4"+ iPhone - They pretend smartphones won't work if you can't use with one hand and ignore that smartphones/PDAs (including the iPhone) have been two handed for decades.

Touchscreen Macs - They claim Gorilla Arm yet ignore that Touch is in addition to existing inputs so it only adds function. And clearly Apple is moving in this direction.

7" iPad - They rely on closed minded thinking about resolution independence, app scaling, portability, profits and even EXISTING products in order to say this product shouldn't exist. But when it does it will probably sell huge and these same people will get one and claim Apple figured out a non existent problem.

Personally, I'd gladly buy all three of those products. Just because they don't exist yet doesn't mean they aren't worth wanting to own.

Both in the phone market, but even more so in the tablet market, it is important for competitors to be different from Apple. That's why they make phones and tablets in different sizes than Apple does.

Apple certainly would sell lots of iPads at a size close to 8". They would also sell a million or two at 13" size; I would buy one (but that's just me). Close to 8" at say $300 would be desastrous for Apple's competitors.

Now an idea that just occurred to me: A 5" iPhone (in addition to the 3.5"), or even a bit bigger - not the optimal size for me, but one that's most damaging to competitors. And then a switch to "iPad" mode where it behaves like an iPad shrunk to half size and runs all iPad apps unchanged.

The best posters on this forum actually engage other people in conversation, even if they disagree, instead of resurrecting the same tired strawmen to knock down, again and again, in an endless sea of white noise posting.

EDIT: See, it's easy: Being rational about a non-existent apple product is a waste of time because people out here work backwards. They fantasize about what device they think they would like to have, and if Apple doesn't make a solution then they ignore any possibility that it's because it doesn't currently make economic or technical sense for Apple to do so.

Well I do

and so do about 500 of my news media colleagues.

The only reason I, and our photographers (best part of a 100 of them) haven't jumped ship to a 7" android tablet is down to 2 specific apps - once an equivalent app exists for android, & assuming Apple don't have a 7" tablet, we'll be off.

Apple has thrown out the idea of a 7-8" iPad. Instead they are going to make a 7-8" iPod touch.

Would the debate be the same?:)

I don't believe a 7" iPad would be sold by Apple simply because it wouldn't be as good of a user experience as the original, 9.7" iPad. Everything would be smaller, and even refurbished iPad 2s are being sold on their site for under $350 right now.

Steve Jobs even said it when talking about their deal with Microsoft. They don't have to make Microsoft (Android, etc.) lose for Apple to win.

"We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose. We have to embrace a notion that for Apple to win, Apple has to do a really good job."

Simple, really. And Apple is already doing a really good job with regard to iPads.

Just my thoughts.

Why the dislike of a 7" iPad?

Simple... Fear.

Being closed minded.

Choosing to compare it to Fire or Nexus 7.

Mostly fear.

It's what stops both people & companies from moving forward or taking a risk.

Keep in mind the iPad 2 isn't as good of an experience as the new iPad but Apple is still happy to offer it. I think it's time to look at Apple as just another company with a sole purpose of making a profit.

Too big to carry around? Much better than carrying around a laptop.

Yes, correct. I find it a tad too big to carry around. I never carry my laptop around if I wasn't going to do actual work on it.

But now that tablets exist it makes it easier to. Why can't I wish Apple made something a bit smaller and make it even more portable?

If people don't want a smaller tablet, then simply don't buy one! There seems to be enough interest out there with a slew of companies trying to tap into that market. Apple is just like any other company out there and if there's a potential to make another product to turn a profit, I'm pretty sure they will. As expected by their shareholders.

Well duh! WTH did you think they were doing? Designing products for the betterment of man kind? Apple's sole purpose is to make money for their shareholders!

I will have an honest look at it. the only "problem" will be that my eyes are now used to retina and less is difficult. But if the solution looks good enough and not as "bad" as iPad 1 and iPad 2 I will give it a shot. Will be a nice book reader for my Kindle content and iBook. Also try to convince wife to get one for our son.

Some people simply have that elitist/selfish attitude in that the only thing they care about their needs and not see the full picture.

After using the ipad 9.7 and xoom 10.1 I cant see myself going to 7 inch tablets, however I could see why one would be interested in a smaller one, budget for some and better portability.

I just don't see the need for another device. I already have an iPhone for when I'm on the go. An iPad for when I'm at home. A MacBook Pro for when I need to do some serious work and an iPod classic for music when I'm on long journeys.

When I think about it, I can't see a legitimate gap that a smaller iPad could fill for me, so it doesn't make sense for me to buy one. Maybe in the future that gap will show itself, but for now I don't need a smaller iPad.
