The multi touch on mine worked great and it performed well and the build quality is top notch. But like you said. The ergonomics are terrible and it's uncomfortable. I hope they do an update that feels better. It's a good start and still better than the hockey puck mouse :)

I do have one complaint about the Magic Mouse: to me the gesture to go back is too easily triggered. I can't count the number of times I have accidentally gone back while on a web page. Most times it is not a big deal. But other times it is a pain (ahem, like playing a Flash-based game).

I have tried Magic Prefs and BetterTouchTool to try and tame it, with mixed success.

I absolutely adore my magic mouse.... I admit that it is terrible for gaming, but makes scrolling through long, boring, academic papers a breeze.

The only thing I don't like about the magic mouse is its too heavy. If I used that all day my wrist would be broken. I good mouse needs to be light and slide easily. Thats why I use laptop mice on all my computers.

Makes me wonder if the Magic Mouse now differs somehow from when they were first released?

My experiences are the same as the OP's, tried it for few weeks, tossed it in a drawer and went back to the Logitech Anywhere USB mouse.

We ordered two the day they where released, both didn't work well on many surfaces, pointer was slow, jumpy and not precise. I'm going to try mine again, if it doesn't work better than it did will try buying a new one, hopefully that solves the problem.

I 100% agree. Although a beautiful and smooth device, moving it on the desk is just too much hard work. I presume it would work better on a very glossy desk, but on a normal office desk it seems hard work.

I still continue to use it as it doesn't need a USB connector, but I must admit my Microsoft notebook optical is a far better in terms of ergonomics.

Seriously, it may look nice but it is the most awkward and uncomfortable mouse I have ever used. Do Apple expect people to change the shape of their hands to use this mouse???

Not to mention its performance isn't very good either. It doesn't move very well on certain mouse matts and its wireless connectivity is extremely temperamental.

Honestly, I hate the thing.

So yeah, this is more a rant than anything else but just wanted to know if other people agree or can recommend a few solutions to these problems.

It's sucks ass big time agreed, I never got the shape of this thing either, too uncomfortable, say what you want about the much maligned magic mouse, I personally loved it with its quirks, but the shape fit the hand perfectly.

When even the head of os x can't use it and embarrasses himself on a keynote with things popping up when they shouldn't...well that's ample evidence it's a **** product, and an overpriced one for that matter.

How do you make your hand almost flat to hold it, to cup it that is? Fells like trying to cup a small breast...not a good feeling if you know what I mean.

Cupping any breast is never a bad thing.

I personally love the Magic Mouse.

i like the magic mouse touch areas for back and forth and the scrolling but not a fan of the other parts of the touch idea also do not like the design of the body of it why have such a narrow profile trying to use it makes my wrist hurt if it was the basic shape of a normal mouse it would be perfect the same for the logitech touch mouse it has the same basic profile of the magic mouse

I'm guessing not many people use these for anything technical. This mouse is a nightmare. The ergonomics are terrible, the surfaces are far too touchy (even after adjustment), and the surface does a poor job of multi touch, especially when using software like magicprefs (which you need to make up for the shortcomings of the original settings). Running CAD, Adobe CS6, 3d modeling, it is the single most frustrating component of my process.

Mine works fine. I like the side scrolling and two finger swipe. Have only had minor connectivity issues once or twice in years.

Earlier you wrote, "It doesn't move very well on certain mouse matts and its wireless connectivity is extremely temperamental."

I assume you meant mouse pad. Are u trying to use it on a plain old mouse pad? I personally never use a mouse pad with a MM. Mouse pads were born in the era of the physical mouse wheel. Why use one now? To me it only makes the MM work worse than it should, and you still have the "running out of runway" issue.

Plus, the MM has, essentially, it's "own" pad: the rubberized black strips on the bottom.

Michael

If you use an optical mouse on a slightly rugged wooden table, the mouse cursor will jump around the screen because of the light not being reflected to the sensor as expected by it. That's why some people, like me, still use a mouse pad. Wish I didn't have to.

Gave up

I gave up on the magic mouse and reverted to the mighty mouse.

I prefer the track ball, though the attempt to avoid a mechanical device that doesn't get full of crud is a good idea. Feels like I have to move too far back on the magic mouse to scroll.

But the main reason was not being able to figure out how to handily activate spaces with the magic mouse. I really like the left, right, middle options.

I found it hard to use at the beginning but now I think it's great! I remember I found the gestures "impossible" — especially swiping through Spaces. But now I'm used to all the gestures, and the application BetterTouchTool made it even better! I can even perform a middle click, close tab and close programs in addition to the default functionality, with my Magic Mouse.

I can imagine if you have giant man hands it wouldn't be a very comfortable mouse. I actually really like the MM.

i know its an old thread but i just googled "why does my magic mouse suck" and this came up.. having some serious drops in connection and laggy pointers as well. i have used multiple different MM's and its the same thing every time, never notice it with either the keyboard or the trackpad..

although I do like the overall look and no track wheel all touch thing they went for and started an epidemic, but is it just me is is bluetooth always kind of hit or miss?

also, they need better gliders. MM on a soft mouse pad is horrible

I use my MM on a piece of thing pad-cloth thingy that I got for free, took some thing to get used to it but I'm fine with it now. It does feel a little heavy though, especially since I use a Logitech Touch at work and that thing is LIGHT. I wish it would also work with only 1 battery.

Could your connection problems be due to interference?

Some Minis are missing a piece of bluetooth shielding that weakens the signal when a USB is plugged in.

I have been using the Magic Mouse for almost a year (I have 2 one for 2012 iMac, 1 for 2012 rMBP) I can say that it is awesome, my hand has never cramped up (Unlike my old USB PC mouse) and the gestures are awesome! It never disconnects and the batteries last about 3 months being on 24/7 and being used a couple hours a day. To the OP, I would get a new one, sounds like you got a lemon, it shouldn't disconnect unless it has less than 3% battery power.

----------

1 thing, if you are going to use it for gaming... Don't, it doesn't work well for gaming, for everything else; yes, but gaming; no.

Another hand cramp victim.

Wish they would make an additional mouse that was fatter/taller to cure the issues some are having with it.

I think the problem I had with the Magic Mouse is the size. I think that the multi-touch area on the mouse is too small and my hand was too big. I have a trackpad and love it.

Seriously, it may look nice but it is the most awkward and uncomfortable mouse I have ever used.

Love mine and never experience the issues you have described

You need a mouse that fits your hand. There's really only one way to choose a mouse: find a bricks and mortar store with a range on display and see which size/shape/weight is most comfortable for you.

Personally, after using a Magic or Mighty mouse for about 45 seconds, I want to gnaw my hand off - I know other people who like them (although I have seen several fail because the battery terminals lose their mojo).

Heck, I know one person who liked the famous "hockey puck" mouse.

Apple's problem is their one-size-fits all approach.

Personally, I'd recommend the Logitech Performance MX (provided you're not left handed) but for the fact that mine has developed a tendency to produce spurious double-clicks on the right button.
