19,1 iMac w macOS 12.6
iPhone13 Pro Max w iOS 16 (20A362)

With a lightning cable I connect my new iPhone13 Pro Max w my 19,1 iMac. I am told I need a software update to see the iPhone. So I click to install, it fails every time. Why? The system software on both devices are up to date. Why do I get the message and it fails?

There's this recent thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...o-connect-to-iphone-fails-to-install.2360866/ with a couple of suggestions.

From what I've read on Stack Exchange, there's a possible bug in the MobileDeviceUpdater, and a workaround is to install XCode from the App Store. You don't have to do anything with the app once installed.

I've also read making sure your phone is charged to at least 80% might help.

For a much more technical explanation, you can read this:

Thank you will check it out. Ive read the comments and will reinstall Xcode. I have it already, but will reinstall, also try the iPhone battery at minimum 80% with a different lightning cable.

I have done two things to get the issue resolved. I don't know which solved the issue, but it no longer shows when connecting the iPhone13 Pro Max to 19,1 iMac w macOS12.6.

1. I changed lightning cables.
2. I opened Xcode14. The app began updating itself. So whatever was installed earlier was not enough and it needed to update itself.
