I don't understand why people say it's wrong to include an olio phobic coating. Without it you'll need cleaning liquids to remove the oils that came from your fingers.

For me, the coating is not a problem and there is no way I'd send my SS back for this or any other reason. However, I am disappointed in Apple's vagueness with regard to just what this coating is and its ramifications to ownership. They hit that "sapphire" marketing check box loud and clear. Now what about this coating that covers it and the ion-x glass? And, they even say in their support documents that it will wear away. Well, what are we left with then? How long will this take? And so on. Vague vague vague. So in this case Apple deserves some scrutiny as to the materials used, IMO.

And lastly aren't we just making assumptions that the olio phobic on the OPs watch is scratched. Which may or may not be true.
Agree, absolutely.

Something just doesn't add up here. How is it that Consumer Reports who is known for being very discriminating when it comes to Apple products was unable to scratch the sapphire screen and sang it's praises, yet we're already seeing several people claiming they have scratches?

This is very true.... #weird.

Lol, you're new here? This is Macrumors. If there is a good product, someone will be around to tell you that it's terrible, Apple has lost its way, Steve Jobs is in heaven pissed off, demanding that God send him back before Tim Cook dooms the company.

So the watch comes with a sapphire face that is almost scratch proof only to be coated to resist to fingerprint smears which apparently scratches easily but to prevent scratches in the coating that reduces fingerprint smear, we will cover the near scratch proof face with a screen protector to protect the coating that resists fingerprint smear only to be met with constantly needing to clean the screen protector because of fingerprint smear.

Brilliant

We all have the oleophobic coating on our iPhones and microscratches within the coating aren't visible except under certain lighting conditions (sunlight, etc.) so why is it an issue on the Watch?

If you're the anal retentive type get over it.

Why have a sapphire screen if the coating gets scratched?

Speak for yourself, my phone hasn't.

Unless you have a film over it, bet you you'll see them in bright sunlight. You induce them just from normal use and it's perfectly normal.

I am looking as we speak, outside during a hot sunny day, nothing. I don't think it's that normal else I would of noticed it on all my idevices.

I have a film on my iPhone 6 Plus. My brother doesn't and stated that he has no scratches on his screen. I held it up to the light and moved it around and the screen is covered in tiny scratches. Glad I stuck with the film

Not looking careful enough then. I guarantee you I'll find them if you give it to me.

Exactly. Really no different from some members here.

I haven't put a screen protector on and never mentioned it so not sure where you got that from. I'm just saying the sapphire screen is pointless.

I don't understand these posts showing scuffs in the sapphire glass when Consumer Reports and numerous other reviewers are putting the screens through torture tests and are raving about the durability of the sapphire glass. Something isn't right.

The only thing I can think of is that it's a QC problem with certain batches of screens. It just doesn't make sense that one screen shows no effects from a drill bit and another is babied and shows scuffs and scratches.

Must be, I've seen a few people having issues with the coating on the screen.

And you didn't made a photo? You are member of the MacRumors. You bought a new piece of Apple Watch, found scratch on your unscratcheble watch and didn't made a photo?! Are you kidding me?

The fact I didn't take a picture doesn't change much. It wouldn't show up on a picture anyway as it could only be seen in certain light and was rather small.

Then forgive me if I take what you've said a grain of salt. I'm thinking about getting a SS and I'll run my own tests to make my decision.

Go for it. The actual watch is fantastic.

Can't you remove the coating with alcohol or hand sanitizer? Thus removing the scratch but inducing smear city.

Another fact for me is that the steel will be less prone to scratches too. The SG sports scratches don't look sexy

If they are microscopic scratches that can barely be seen, by your own admission, are considered normal for a coating used on all of Apples touch screen devices, please tell me why you have determined the watch is a flawed product and a total rip-off.

Watches, by the very nature of how and where they are worn are exposed to accidental scrapes and knocks. Having a hard scratch resistant face is paramount and is considered a welcomed and excellent design feature, not a rip-off, in my opinion.

The sapphire display is used with the purpose of being durable and resistant to almost anything. The fact it isn't due to the coating in the way makes the Watch model worthless to me as the sapphire screen was the main reason I got it. I'm returning it because I don't feel I need the watch yet, the fact the screen scratched is almost irrelevant. I had decided to return it before i noticed the scratch.

Do you even own an iPhone? They're the same microscratches within the coating and are normal. There's no defect here.

No I don't, I bought the watch without owning an iPhone. But why have something that scratches on to of a sapphire screen that doesn't scratch. Makes no sense.

Is there any chance the watches sent to certain review sites didn't have the coating? Not making an accusation here, just wondering.
