I've got the new 16" Macbook Pro and it's the best MacBook they've made in years. I'd been holding off for ages in the hope they might make a better one and this is it! So I find the idea they ruined the MacBook Pro laughable. They finally actually made a half decent pro machine again that I was willing to buy!

The subject of the thread is design as in aesthetics, though :)

I have a 14 inch Macbook Pro with the menu bar permanently available even in fullscreen thanks to that notch. I have never had an issue with menu bars not fitting. Haven't even needed to turn Scale to Fit on. It's a nonissue memoji pfp. I've heard this argument time and time again with the iPhone and on the Mac it's even less of an issue since there's options around it.
Not an argument. It's a fact. I have over 20 menubar items. It is an issue. Probably why Apple came up with Control Center on the Mac... but still doesn't help.

So it's a you issue because you have an absurd amount of items on your menu bar. Got it

Seriously just turn Scale to Fit on. That's what it's there for when there's more menu bar items than normal.

They look outdated and anachronistic with that bulky, boxy design. The new MBP looks similar to my ancient Macbook Pro from 2006 and the colour options on the boring new iMacs are just silly. Go into any Apple Store or reseller and they just look out of place.
I don't think you get how design/style change over time. Maybe you think that design looks outdated and too similar to 2006, but to me, the 2018 designs look outdated, overly polished and "breakable" for a computer. Apples new design is more simplistic and made to look like premium but slightly industrial feeling equipment. Maybe you don't like the design, but that doesn't mean Apple ruined it, it just means you don't like it. The new Macs aren't even close to 2006 machines. They've got thousands of times better speakers, displays, performance, battery, and yes build quality as well. And I happen to think they're MUCH better looking than the MacBooks they replaced, which used the same design language for quite some time.

If you mean the menubar items on the right, those have been a problem for years even before the notch came along. Many of us got Bartender to be able to move the less useful icons to another area. It and some clone apps work well for that. I've only got 6 icons show and about 18 in the Bartender overflow panel.

Ridiculous comment. The whole point of a comment section is to come on and express your opinion and get a discussion going.
It seems more like the purpose of it is to seek validation for opinions that you know are ridiculous, and when it doesn't happen, throw a tantrum.

I thought the notch was an awful design compromise at first from the press shots, but I got a 14" MBP anyway since everything else about it was perfect for my use case. I was all ready to find software tweaks to bring the menu bar underneath the notch and fill in the above with black, but within 10 minutes of actually using the machine I forgot completely it existed.

I guess it's something that's easy to hyper-focus on when you're looking at a static image, but when you're actually using the computer your attention is captured by the actual screen content and the notch vanishes from consciousness. Personally a big fan of the extra vertical screen real estate, especially coming from a 16:9 laptop.
My next computer is a MacBook Pro. Apple has absolutely nailed it. Notch never bothered me on iPhones and certainly wouldn’t on a computer either.

I just sold my M1 yesterday and picked up the midnight M2. I know there's not a huge size difference, but for some reason the M2 feels dramatically smaller in my hand than the old wedge-shaped design. The old wedge was a great design, but was around for far too many years and definitely needed an update.

To me, the 2018-2021 MBA design always looked a bit cheap. And I owned and used the original 2008 and a 2015 model for years, so I had experience with both previous Air chassis.

The M2 looks different but not in a bad way.
I can understand someone not liking the design, sure that's a matter of opinion, but I cannot understand it being considered "cheap".

The new iMac actually had the involvement of Jony Ive and is a callback to the original iMac with the colors. Would you have complained about colors and "sticking out" when the first iMac came out?
While I think Ive's involvement is the main reason that the current iMac is an awful design (lack of ports, lack of internal power supply, etc), I do have to say that the current colors are NOT a "callback" to the original iMac. The original (and subsequent) colors were bold and aesthetically pleasing (bondi blue, tangerine, blueberry, grape, lime, strawberry, indigo, ruby, sage, etc.). I loved Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian, too. But the current iMac colors are awful. Muted pastels that look like they sat out in the sun too long and faded. The white bezels just add to the awkwardness of the color scheme. iMacs in a variety of colors? Great! The current colors?...pretty bad.

You are in the minority.
The last opinion poll I saw on the MBA design change (back when it came out) indicated he'd be in the majority. Not that Majority or Minority matters. Public consensus doesn't factor into Apple's design decisions. Apple could decide to shape everything like horse apples and everyone who needs a new computer capable of running 2023 software would still be buying it. Every car on the road made after 1969 looks like a plastic door stop too, yet the roads are full of them, because people need to get to work. The US doesn't need good design, it needs a steady supply of product to feed its gaping maw. Might as well have your crap designed by engineers. The rich can buy Italian if they appreciate design. Yeah, guess my industry.

Notice any difference in performance day to day? I think my ideal dream computer would be a Midnight 14” MBP. I want ProMotion with miniLED and the extra ports.

I actually prefer the white bezels if the iMac. I initially didn’t like it but once I got purchased one and set it up on my desk the white blends much better then the black. And I think majority of people won’t even notice it after having it in their room. Same thing goes for the iPhone notch. No one cares anymore because you don’t even notice it.

I looked at the new M2 MacBook Air in an Apple Store recently and came away thinking how thankful I was for going ahead with my purchase of the previous wedge-shaped MacBook Air. I was hoping the new MBA would look better in reality than the photos and videos I'd seen online, but it actually looked worse. The flat design is boring and already looks outdated, it was covered in smudges and fingerprints, and the notch and Touch ID button on the keyboard both stick out like a sore thumb. It just lacks that sleek perfection that the previous MBA design had, which actually looks more futuristic now than the new M2 MBA. I just don't understand why Apple is doing this, taking big backward steps with the look and feel of their products. They've already done this with the new iMac, and MacBook Pro, and now the new MacBook Air. Moreover, the new Apple Watch Ultra is the ugliest device they've created in years. Why are they doing this? The reason I loved Apple products in the first place was the sleek minimalism and beautiful aesthetics of their products but they are slowly eroding that approach to design. Is it because Jony Ive has left?
As simple as, because old MBA design is so thin and couldn’t fit more ports. After Jony left, nobody insists design over function.

Whatever floats your boat when justifying your purchase of last-gen product…
