I really like the M2 MacBook Air. So glad I bought it. And regarding the fingerprints, I got silver and fingerprints don't show up. Glad I chose silver instead of Midnight.

LOL. Sad but true. This is why I laugh at *agist slur*'s when they talk about their 1977 Firebird being the end-all be-all of cars. They still judge cars by their look and sound and have no clue how absolutely WHIPPED anything from their childhood is in comparison with today's products. We've evolved and moved past constraints of whatever "looks" sexy and "feels" fast. Now we make things that are...actually fast. Ever seen that video of a Honda minivan beating a 60's Corvette around a track? Boy the *agist slur*'s were fuming and saying it was rigged and fake and making up every excuse. Sorry but progress don't halt just because your feelings disagree.

But if somebody asks why all [current product] look alike the simple answer is "because that's what people are buying".

No joke. My 16" kills me as does every MacBook of any range, size, and vintage that isn't an Air.

I sure remember the first days of the Air. Everybody slammed it and rightly so. It was a piss-poor excuse for a netbook being sold as "full featured". I wanted one until I tried using iMovie on it. The MBA did literally nothing well except balance out wobbly tables. With the release of the M1 Air, I feel that the design was finally ready for prime-time. I believe I have a fully uncompromised machine. I do not need any other computer at all to do everything I will ever need to do except run multiple displays. It is not a laptop sold on "look and sound" like a Corvette (in the first quoted message of this reply). This is the Air that finally doesn't need qualifiers and disclaimers. I wrote an entire review on this achievement and how it feels that so many of my dreams were realized after more than a decade.

All of Apple's machines with AS are finally making dreams into reality. It's like stepping from faux-3D (StarFox on SNES) to real 3D (N64). Enough faking it and setting everybody up for disappointment because this is the real deal and every modern Apple machine truly delivers.

I will agree the M2 Air does look more advanced.
Damn , it kills you? Did you try the m2 air ?

I was at a point where I would just avoid using my 16inch just because of how uncomfortable it was, I’m glad I returned it . I’m afraid the mba m2 lacking the wedge shape might also not be as comfortable as the m1

For those complaining about the notch (still) and menubar icons disappearing... there is an easy and elegant fix for this - it's an app named 'Bartender' and it is a must-have. I tuck all my infrequently used menubar items on the secondary menubar (the 'Bartender Bar') so the 'important' icons on the main menubar never disappear. Just a quick mouseover will reveal all menubar items. It's a great little app.

Its great that this app exists - I hadnt heard of it until someone posted it here yesterday and I have already downloaded it and love it. But the fact remains that this should be an inbuilt feature on my £2000+ mbp.....I shouldn't have to pay extra to restore functionality. Apple shouldnt be getting a pass on things like this.

It really depends on which third-party apps you have installed. Some apps put one or more icons in the menu bar. If you have a lot of apps it adds up, but the default installation doesn’t have very many and most people don’t install enough apps to fill the menubar. Apple could sherlock Bartender and build their own version in but there hasn’t been enough demand for it.

To me, this sounds like it is an aesthetics issue for you, and not a "design ruin" which sparked this thread.

I mean, for the past 11 years, I've had that mid-2011 13" MBA. Wedge and all, I have kept that Mac in a BookBook case by TwelveSouth. After buying my 16" M1 Pro MBP in April and putting it in a BookBook case as well, I have felt no difference in comfort, wedge, no wedge, or otherwise. In fact, I've seen a bit of the opposite; heaver dirt from palm prints on the wedge of my MBA than I have on any MBP; it makes me glad I put a dbrand skin on my Mac.

That certainly is not indicative of ruin of any design, but more of an issue for what you want in a Mac. In short, one person's issues do not make it every person's issues.

BL.

Some people complain just for the sake of complaining.

Everything that apple has done recently is to mitigate the MISTAKES they made in the second half of the Intel era. What we are seeing with the new MacBook Air/MacBook Pro designs are what should have been in place YEARS ago starting with the donglebooks.

I look at these new machines as a return to normalcy instead of painstakingly testing in labs to shave off a few ounces/milimeters each update just for the sake of doing so. The reason the Unibody 2008-2012 design is held in such high regard outside of upgradeability is the fact that the machines actually performed extremely well.

Doubt the claim? Take a look at the Luke Miani video in where he perfectly explained what I told people for many years. A 15" 2012 MBP was still going toe to toe with 2017 Macs because of the thermal envelope squeezing Apple was doing post the unibody era.

Good riddance to the wedge design MBA.

M2 MB Air blows away the M1 in every way. Best laptop ever.
in terms of design it's boring and ugly and looks incomplete without Macbook Air branding.
the M1 looks much nicer.
the repeat the same mistake of removing branding just like they did with Macbook Pro 2015.
for this reason alone,I'm buying an M1 over M2.

⬆ Proof that change can be hard for some people. This is all subjective opinion.

It's a matter of opinion. I love the clear bezel of the M2. The old MBA bezels now look crude to me in comparison. Not so much that I wouldn't consider using the computer, I still think it's great, but I certainly don't prefer seeing the printed label. I also similarly liked the 2015 MBP and bought one at the time.

Maybe some need the reassurance that they are indeed using a macbook air/pro and not some ridiculous off-brand PC

I agree. They ruined it. To be fair the M1 version was the start of the downhill spiral. It weights more than the version it replaced. The new one is just not as good of a field machine for us. The new colors are also trash...starlight < gold...as rose gold < gold on last version. I think they need to drop Air from its name and make a proper Air.

Is this a joke or? The M1 Air kept the same design and removed the fan.

Exactly. The M1 MBA was a sweetheart of a computer when released. It received rave reviews. The M1 MBA is still one of the best laptop values on the market today. You can find them on sale between $750 - $800. The perfect computer for a college student on a tight budget.

I didn’t like the new MBP at first. I even made a thread about it. Then I saw it in person and got my hands on one, and it grew on me immensely. I haven’t gotten to see an M2 Air in person yet but I think once I do I will love it.

The main thing I don’t really love about the new iMacs are the white bezel. I wish it was the same color as the rest of the front, or the back. Or maybe even all black glass like the Intel iMac was. That design would look really sharp in sliver!

So strange how different people can have totally different takes on things like this that you'd think would be pretty objective phenomenons. Neither with my 2013 MBA nor my 2020 MBA have I felt it as being imbalanced or precarious when using on my lap. Now, if the back were hanging off my knees instead of being on my knees, then maybe I could see that, but I've never positioned a laptop in that way.
I just now had my laptop on my lap and noticed that my knees slope slightly downward... in most chairs that's just my natural seated position. Maybe you're fortunate enough not to have that posture!
