No one here cared about NFC payments until September...It was a pipe dream here, but a reality on android. Now that we can use NFC we actually care about its uses. And we can now actually realize the benefits of a more secure and anon,us way to buy things.

Speak for yourself. I've been dying for a way to use nfc on my iPhone since wallet was restricted and softcard had very little option for compatible cards.

I don't consider myself an apple pay snob by any means but i think some people have developed a superiority complex or something over apple pay and at the end of the day its just a phone.

I find it humorous that some people act as if NFC didn't exist before the iPhone 6 was released.

<<--------well count this person in as being a snob.
I used apple pay at an apple store. The experience, meh.
However, I went to whole foods and when I got up to the register I discovered I left my wallet on my desk. The cashier asked if I had an iphone.
Having an iphone the forgotten wallet issue was resolved in 3 seconds.
No scanning various codes and so on. Just held it up and done.

The bottom line is that so many people who own iPhones are douchebags. They think using an Apple product makes them better than everyone else. Trust me it doesn't.
I dunno. Ive never once heard an iFan claim or act like this lol. Ive only heard insecure people claiming iFan people think are better than.... but the real world is a different story. In fact I find that usually people who use words like douchebag to describe others should stand in front of a mirror.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I've noticed one thing since the introduction of Apple Pay that didn't seem to be present when there was only Google Wallet. People have become way too snobbish towards Apple Pay. Why is everyone getting so bent out of shape when their favorite retailers or even retailers they probably don't shop at in the first place are disabling NFC/Apple Pay? I get that NFC may or may not be the future of how we pay, but refusing to pay any other way other than Apple Pay is getting out of hand. Don't you think? Admittedly I've been an Android user for the past few years with access to Google Wallet, but I just don't see the allure of NFC. To me it's almost like a novelty. Maybe I'm the only one? Sorry for the rant, but I'm trying to understand the hype with Apple Pay. Is there some incentive to this over conventional credit card use? I never use cash if that helps and almost always pay by credit, but I'm trying to see the bigger picture I guess.

Maybe everyone's just excited because this is something new. Perhaps the hype will die down after the "newness" wears off.

/Rant over.

Snobbery may stem from flashing their 6/6+ when paying for goods and services. "Look what I have" syndrome. :p

For those that have had credit card fraud committed to them and have had it be a massive hassle I'd suggest a card with better customer service like a card directly issued.

I've had this happen to me. Got an email alert, clicked it was a fraudulent purchase. Card was refunded and reissued, had a new card in 2 days. Literally 2-3 minutes. Then another 5 to change my Hulu, Netflix, and gym membership to the new card number. Mildly inconvenient but in no way a nightmare. That was with Discover, Amex is just as easy. I use other cards where those 2 aren't excepted which is surprisingly few places (been 3 years at least since I used a MC or Visa).

The nightmare comes into play when you add a crappy bank with crappy customer service into the mix.

Off topic yes but regardless of ApplePay you guys should protect yourselves this day in age.

To answer the question why have so many become applepay snobs - its because they're all sheeps. They follow some trend just because some company said its great and they should use it. They dont need it, their life wouldn't be any harder if they didnt have it, yet they still act as its the most important thing in the world.

I'm still waiting to use Apple Pay with my iPhone 6 Plus. Literally none of my cards work at all. I try to add them whenever I hear news on the net that Apple has added more banks and stuff.

Thanks for the opinion, Smartass. There are other reasons, though. Some people would prefer to get away from our current ridiculously insecure credit card system.

I've never cared about NFC even when I toyed with androids years ago and google wallet. It is not that big of a hassle to grab my credit card out of my purse. The only way I'm using NFC regularly is if I have no choice.

My boyfriend on the other hand things NFC is the greatest thing since slice bread. To each his own!

It's not about having to pull out the credit card. Apple pay has another layer of security where the merchants never see your real card number. Remember when Target has all credit cards number stolen? It will not happen with Apple Pay, even if they get a hold of your numbers it's useless because they're virtual number that needs to be unscrambled.

As others have said, it has nothing to do with snobbery. I don't shop or not shop at stores because they have or don't have apple pay, but the security is miles better than the traditional credit card system. One of my cards has been compromised twice in the last 8 months. Not the end of the world, but annoying. If that kind of annoyance can be alleviated or eliminated with Apple Pay, I'm all for it.

Exactly this. I had my card info stolen not once, but twice. First time from Target, second time from Home Depot. I have owned both androids and every apple phone to date, and each have their great points. As the one who is paying for my iphone, and paying my cell phone bill, I am entitled to like whatever I choose. I don't think I'm better than anyone, and have only ever encountered that type of attitude here on the forums. Just like what you like, and stay in your own lane for cripes sake.

My perspective is that if Apple Pay fails, the banks will never try contactless payments in the US ever again.

Most people don't know this but some American banks actually issued contactless credit and debit cards in the latter half of the previous decade. No one ever used them. There are various reasons why:
  1. A significant amount of paranoia around them by the media which spread to some members of the public. It's bad enough now that banks have to have FAQ sections that basically say "no, your new chip and signature card does not support contactless at all".
  2. Contactless required POS/terminal upgrades, much like Apple Pay does now. Unfortunately, there was no incentive for merchants to perform those upgrades then (unlike now with the chip migration) so there were very few places one could use the cards.
  3. They weren't much faster than swiping and provided few other benefits for consumers. (However, contactless/NFC is faster than inserting a card, which will soon be another incentive for consumers.)
As a result, there are very few issuers that offer those cards any more. Even if they do, the feature is extremely underpromoted and likely opt-in. For instance, American Express has them but you have to browse extremely deep in their website to realize the feature exists; meanwhile, Apple Pay has a huge banner on their home page right now.

To be fair, Apple Pay and Google Wallet/Android Pay are superior to the contactless cards. For one thing, the NFC radio only turns on when you're authenticated. There's also the tokenization that Apple/Android Pay have which reduces the impact of future data breaches. But therein lies the issue; if a superior technology doesn't take off, why would banks bother to even consider bringing back an inferior product that basically only causes customer complaints?

That's why the CVS/Rite-Aid/CurrentC thing really pissed me off. It's like they knew that the NFC solutions were superior to their vaporware system and were trying anything they could to make sure it never succeeded. Now we know that it won't, but back then when NFC acceptance was a lot lower it was definitely a possibility. That said, some of the stuff that members of this community were doing (e.g. leaving shopping carts full of items at checkouts) were definitely the wrong way to express their frustration and anger.
