OS X is only an opinion Pre-req. There is nothing you can't do on Windows.

OS X vs Windows is more opinion than anything, having a batter LCD and audio is fact.

All the obese folks are going to love that battered LCD and audio. MMmm.

Um???? I hate to dissapoint you but "hp horror" gives 25.8 million hits. "apple horror" gives 87.4 million hits. Just saying. Check it if you don't believe me.

71 million for me on apple horror BUT it is named after a fruit and list movies + apps based on horror.

It's a shameless and embarrassing rip-off. It steals things that Apple pride themselves on and pretty much ruins them (but most consumers wouldn't see these details). The design is god awful compared with the MacBook line, the specs may be better on the paper but Apple choose their specs for a reason. I can honestly say that this is the HP Pavilion series all over again (and I hate them with a passion, trust me). It's going to be a show off on paper but in reality a clunky, tacky, unfriendly piece of crap... The tipping point for me when I went full rage on this was 1:10 in the 2nd video, from which I quote; ''what we did with the keyboard is unique''. It's disappointing to see a company like HP now so spineless and unoriginal. Caught up in the spec war with no regard for actual user experience. There's my (slightly anger warped) view.

What's really funny is that the copied design on the Mac Book Pro is a design that is almost four years old. When the new design hits within six months HP will do the same thing in another three years.

Despite all the "copies" I've seen, none really take after the true attribute of Apple products, which is simplicity.

Yes, they really did make the notebook look like a MBP, and it doesn't look bad. But they are missing the point IMO.

Instead of copying Apple's design, they should just minimize their own original ideas and create their own original product with a minimal, simplistic approach.

A number of things I see "wrong" with it are:

- Beats button (It's big and just hideous.)
- Track pad isn't center of body (One reason I despise full keyboards on notebooks.)
- Envy logo laser etched into body (There is no reason for it)
- The track pad labels (Again, unnecessary and clutters the design)
- Ports are cluttered about on both sides (When you plug a lot of things in, it's going to look like a spider is sitting on your desk)
- The corner keys are rounded way too much
- The hip-roof looking lid is kind of odd, why not just make it round?

I like that there is two Display Port connections (at least that is what I think they are). But even then, why include an HDMI port? It's just redundancy.

I'm not dogging on the design, it's really not that bad. But it is in no way a MBP copy. There is more to Apple products than the look, it's the attention to detail and minimal design. All I see the competition doing is making their products look like an Apple product and leaving out the attention to detail. Seriously, I wish other manufacturers would stop paying attention to other designs and pay more attention to the detail in their own designs.

True to an extent.

Hardware and OS may be 50/50, but how that OS integrates with said hardware is what determines its functionality.

One thing about Apple is you will never have a problem with the OS not working to its full potential on their hardware.

macbook horror still gives 5 million hits. Also don't forget that the HP number contains the printer business.

iphone horror and ipad horror give 100m+ each.

asus horror just has 3 million hits.

stupid way to measure quality :D

I agree, but that also mean it will never see its full potential ever, as Apple never has the most cutting edge CPU's or GPU's or RAM speeds, or SSD's.

Sadly the fastest OS X will ever be is as fast as Apple decides to support, which often is NOT the fastest hardware. While I love my MacBook, i sometimes hate that I'll never have a 69xx ATI card in my laptop, and they don't offer SATA3 SSD's or 1600MHz RAM. Even though it works. I often feel they limit themselves by aesthetics to much. I wouldn't mid a bit thicker or heavier laptop if it mean't "best of the best you can get today."

Alienware M18x, huge? Hell yes. but if it had Apples designed applied to it's hardware I'd like to have one.

Why would you want a laptop that only lasts 20 minutes on battery? That needs a 200 W charger?

And you can easily upgrade your SSD and RAM to SATA3 and 1600 MHz.

LOL so funny. I guess he never thought to check before posting that little Gem.

Freakin grief their low quality junk has caused me over the years...

The grief HP has caused me:
2005 HP ZV6000
-OS corrupted (not their fault)

2008 HP TX1000
- charger broke at 8 months
- Wifi card failed at 8 months
- logic board started to die around one year
- dropped it and the screen shattered

2009 HP DV6
- first charger broke at 8 months
- battery started having problems around 11 months (though the computer is no longer flashing errors) HP customer support is so hopeless I gave up trying to get it replaced under warranty
- second charger broke at 20 months; it was shooting out sparks, thank goodness I was home
- this computer creaks and trim pieces are falling off
- it has always been VERY slow on boot up, even though I've restored it 3 times now and barely have any start up programs

It comes down to scale. At the end of the day if they have to spend more on parts to get a potentially small increase in revenue then it doesn't make business sense.

Not having a 69xx did not stop you from buying, so what is the incentive of offering one?

Bleh I think Windows needs one of their larger oems to step up. They should come up with something cool that is unique to their brand and sets them apart. Windows still runs on a ton of new computers, although I'd be interested to know the statistics on what first time buyers choose (those without heaps of software written for one platform or the other).

I want to just mention regarding the chargers, I've personally had chargers from Apple break going all the way back to the G4 (they'd last a couple years but this is even when I was careful with them). I have experienced creaks with Apple laptops which basically ended with the unibody design. Apple support can be extremely frustrating outside of warranty so I've gone to using some of the third party authorized repair services rather than Apple directly.

Experiences with HP, friend's laptop froze up while I was checking email a couple years back, HP displays dying on people just outside the warranty, etc. It hasn't been very good. It's just that Dell also sucks and HP can't fully compete with them on price, so they really should reconsider the structure of their line and quality control given that HP has retained a fairly strong portion of the corporate market.

Yeah...wear on chargers and such is to be expected, but at least Apple would replace the charger right away. HP support is so bad that i'd rather buy a $49 charger than have to wait on hold for an hour, and then be stuck a month without a charger while HP sends me one. PLUS one was literally was shooting out sparks. I'm glad it happened while I was in the room!

A blatant, crappy ripoff of the MacBook Pro. Just look at the seams on the machine. HP clearly attempted to copy the form-factor of the Pro, but failed in that it's not a smooth unibody. They certainly love to talk up the specs (probably the only area an HP can match a Mac).

I had an HP laptop a few years ago. It was decent, but I quickly realized that its quality and performance were extremely lacking. HP's laptops are fine for people who are on a budget and don't really care about their overall user experience. You can, basically, get the same work done on a Mac as you can on any other Windows machine. The difference is how well Macs run and how fun they are to use. Apple's products are a step above the others.

It perplexes me why other companies can't make a good effort to match Apple. All the plastic Android phones and tacky Windows boxes have the same things in common - low quality build, "high" specs, and relative unreliability. I guess you can see this trend in any business, though.

I am always cheering for more competition in the notebook field because that's a good thing. (OSX is just another operating system to me).

But I'll believe the "fine" engineering on that Envy when I see it. The gaps just surrounding the trackpad are big enough to drive a truck through.

Give me solid and precision craftsmanship over all the other bells and whistles any day. PC makers just don't get it.

When will companies realize that if i want a laptop that looks like a macbook pro, i will get a macbook pro? Especially near the same price.... these guys are clowns.....

THumbs up if you agree......

Original Poster was shady for deceiving people with the title though....

If good design is what the consumers want then why not give it to them? Many Macbook owners bought their Macbook because of the good design, not because of OS X or any other 'magical' quality that you believe your Macbook has.

I personally have owned two Macbooks, and I only bought them because at the time, they had the best design on the market. I use OS X but from a usability/comfort standpoint it's not any better than Windows 7 (you're just deluding yourself if you believe otherwise).

So if other companies want to improve their products, then let them. Industry moves forward, and everybody wins.

Apple copied Sony's chiclet keyboard because it was good design.
Many manufacturers copied iOS interface because it was good design.
Apple copied Android's notification system because it was good design.
Many manufacturers copied the 'long battery life' idea because it was good design.

How have we not all benefited from this? This happens in the industry all the time. Adopting good design and getting rid of bad ones, it's how we move forward.

So please, stop with the blind brand loyalty, it makes you guys look pathetic.

It may mimic the MBP but I feel confident it will be an epic FAIL in the " fit and finish " department.

There have been many attempts to copy in some way, Apple's deign, and all seem to fall short in that very important aspect.

1.5 minutes into the first video ..... FAIL !

.

Mimic? They went far beyond the macbook pro. IPS display, more advanced backlight technology, 9 hours of battery life.

I'm still waiting for Apple to put IPS displays on Macbook pro's.

I agree. I read the presentation a bit more carefully, at least the internals blow away the average MBP. Here's some interesting notes:

6 GB Ram minimum. It's not 8 GB, but it's better than apples 4 GB.
9 hours battery. If that's true, it would be amazing (but maybe that's only with the extra large battery?)
choice of Radeon HD graphic cards? (the current 17'' comes with a 6850M)
two HDD slots in the 17'' model
full HD in the 15'' model (and of course in the 17'')
blue ray player
replaceable battery, extra large battery available
high quality sound system
new display technology?
up to 4 years warranty available
temperature management

Of course, it doesn't work with OSX. But more important is whether HP gets the small details right, e.g. a touchpad that is as good as the MBP, and if the screen is actually good. Also the previous model seems to be a bit louder than the macbooks, at least when idle/small load.
Anyways, the ingredients are there. Whether HP can cook something that at least comes close to an MBP remains to be seen.

It appears that the ENVY 15 will have the AMD Radeon 7690M. That should be a power optimized HD 6770M. These are not the 28nm cards you are looking for.
