Because it will be my first iPad, and it's really worth enough for me to buy one instead of iPad2.

Give me a break.

None of the people that posted in this thread actually need the new iPad, let alone people that already have an iPad 2.

It's just how much you want it, and how much you're able to convince yourself that you "need" it. It's amazing device but come on. Have some self awareness.

Well honestly NOBODY needs an iPad... this was supposed to be a fun thread. Thanks for being a buzz kill. :)

You should go ruin Santa Claus for some little kids while you're at it.

I am sure a few of you are like me, an owner of the iPad 2 who is considering the iPad 3. While its definitely more of a "want" decision I'm asking why any of you NEED to have the iPad 3.

For me it's the retina display for reading. Now I can actually finish Steve Jobs biography and not be able to use the excuse of eye strain. Or I could buy an e-ink ereader to do the same thing.

I don't need it. I want it. That's reason enough for me.

I do actually need an iPad. Part of my job involves reviewing iOS apps and writing news and editorial pieces about Apple. Therefore, to be able to give a reliable, educated opinion, I kind of actually need to the device i'm talking about. And, of course, I can't review retina apps without a retina iPad. :)

----------

I'd also like to get into app development at some point in the future, which is another reason.

i love these people who try and make you feel bad for wanting something that isn't a need...same type of folks who voted for hope and change

Ha good call. I also need one to write a review of on my blog. :D:D:D

I develop, and program, so my iPad usually needs to be up to date when something huge comes out, like the retina display.

'Need' will never be applied to a product like this. But from what I figure, it'll be useful enough to be classified as an investment.

Face it. You don't NEED it. No one NEEDS it. You WANT it. If you can afford it, then great - go for it. I've read about 40 books on my Ipad2 and never once felt eye strain. I think it's a fallacy, perpetuated by ebook manufacturers to show how their product is better. You don't have to justify wanting something. You want it. If you're not taking food out of anyone's mouth or blowing the mortgage payment to get one then you should do it and not feel a bit of guilt!

We easily write off the retina display because we've had it on our iPhones forever. But, it's going to be a really great experience on an iPad. I can't WAIT to start using it.

I'm looking at the home screen. I'm looking at the keyboard. I'm looking at the weather app. I'm looking at the OS.

Technically, they didn't lie, so allow me to correct myself:

It's true, from a certain distance your eye can't distinguish between the individual pixels, (I would debate that) but you can see them. Unfortunately the display itself is still pixelated.

Whatever numbers they have on this, I suggest that they double, triple and multiply it to improve on this display.

I want it to be so clear that it looks like I'm seeing through the screen.

They're not there yet.

Uh...who cares? They don't need to be "there" because no one else is "here" or comes close to here. Have you looked at the thousands of Android phones (released each week it seems)? If you're complaining about retina displays showing pixels, you'll sh-t yourself at how easily you can see pixels on Android devices (of course, not ALL...)

lul.
