Viewing angles are overrated. Nobody is going to be viewing their laptop screen from 360 degrees.
I disagree. Viewing angles are extremely important to me. I use it as a side monitor, etc.,

This is why I didn't buy a cheap screened computer like the NEO. Mine is a premium OLED with over 500 nits of brightness at 16" (and a resolution of 2500 x 1600). The laptop also cost well over $1500.

But I also think that as long as one knows what one is getting for their money ($599), then the screen in the Neo is fine.

Why do many people on this forum get upset when someone returns something to Apple? I'm glad the OP returned something he didn't like. I couldn't care less if Tim Cook didn't make as much profit due to customers returning products they are dissatisfied with.
The thing is that it is so obvious he should not have bought it in the first place (as the devices he already uses unequivocally indicate he's not part of the target audience) that many wonder here what is the purpose of starting a thread about it, apart from getting replies that wonder about the purpose. This is not going to help those who already know the neo is not for them, and not going to help either those genuinely belonging to the target audience, who may end up here being worried about the viewing angles of a screen they'll never look at from such extreme angles.

I stopped in the Apple Store today and they had the Neo and the 13 inch MBA side by side, so was able to do a comparison. Here’s what I saw in just a quick side by side:
  • First off, the Neo has such a premium look and feel.
    • Love the trackpad
      • To be fair, I enable touch to click on all of MacBooks and stand-alone trackpads…so I’m never “pressing” to click.
    • Love the keyboard feel and coloring
    • love all of the colors:
      • Indigo, which I didn’t think would be my favorite, was my favorite, Silver next, Blush was awesome (for me…third though) and Citrus just is not for me (although I can see how others would love it).
    • Really a quality little laptop
  • The display comparison (Neo to MBA)
    • The Neo has noticeably more glare/reflections. It’s not close when compared with the MBA.
    • The off-axis viewing of the Neo did lose a bit of crispness compared to the MBA (e.g., less contrast)
      • Would not be an issue for me as I’m always looking straight on to my laptop.
      • I had the 24 inch iMac for a while (e.g., 4K display) and noticed the same thing when comparing to my older 2015 27 inch iMac 5K display. Off axis viewing of the 24 inch iMac far inferior to the 5K iMac (massive loss of contrast).
    • Colors were not quite as vivid on the Neo compared to the MBA.
      • However, viewing the Neo on its own (not comparing)…they were very good.
    • I should have looked at the text and graphics (e.g., comparing each)…but didn’t…so can’t comment.

I think it’s more so the need to hop on here and make some grand announcement, like no one needs to know. This type of post needs to be band around any new item launch as all it does is get people to fight and disagree. With what’s going on in the world who needs more of that.

Why must we consider "what's going on in the world" when deciding what to talk about?

Can I ask.... and I've always wondered about this: what are American consumer's rights to return goods, particularly used goods?

Here in the UK, even though we still have the EU directive enshrined in our Consumer Rights Act, our right of return doesn't seem half as generous.

Americans on here seem to be able to fully use goods for days, and still be able to take them back. Is that right? Or is it just an Apple thing?
I agree. I see the rationale of disliking an electronics product and returning it. But it seems it's gotten out of hand (at least in the U.S.) in constantly trying and returning something just to check it out. It seems so wasteful. And it likely increases costs for the manufacturer and ultimately us.

Likely these items get recycled and sold as refurbished, but it just feels like over-consumerism to me without much thought or commitment given to the item. At least check out a display model first if possible.

It's extreme selfishness but that's the society we live in (at least in the US). And yes, it's ultimately detrimental to society.

Got my Neo today. Put it through some paces, and just got back from the Apple Store to return it.

Why I returned it:
  • The screen size is just a little bit too small for my liking. The 13.6” MBA size is a better size for me. I could sort of live with this, if it wasn’t for:
  • The screen quality is just not good enough for me. Two main issues with it: the viewing angles are noticeably worse than a MBA and MBP screen and the clarity and crispness of the text and graphics is noticeably not as good as a MBA or MBP. Everything looks slightly blurred on screen in comparison to Apple’s Pro devices and even compared to the MBA.
The Neo’s screen made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I can’t go to a screen like that when I use devices like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPad Pro M5, the MacBook Pro M series, and a M3 MacBook Air.

I did side by side comparisons with the same content as well just to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.

Overall really nice device though. Great build quality, nice keyboard and trackpad, decent sounding audio, ran apps well, etc.

UPDATE: I BOUGHT THE NEO BECAUSE I AM LOOKING TO REPLACE MY 15” M3 MBA WITH A SMALLER DEVICE AS THE MBA IS MY NON-WORK PERSONAL LAPTOP. I BOUGHT THE NEO TO PUT IT THROUGH ITS PACES AT HOME OVER A SEVERAL DAY PERIOD, NOT A FLEETING HANDFUL OF MINUTES IN A RETAIL STORE. I INTENDED TO KEEP IT AND DON’T REGULARLY RETURN PRODUCTS TO APPLE. THE SPECS OF A SCREEN ARE NOT ENOUGH TO KNOW AHEAD OF TIME WITHOUT USING THE DEVICE WHETHER IT’S ACCEPTABLE OR NOT.
Respect for not mentioning it only having 8GB RAM.

I personally don’t have a problem with threads like this but I do know they cause a lot of chaos. Like when the iPhone Air came out, I definitely did my fair amount of trash talking it. But at least in the Neos defense it isn’t trying to be anything other than a budget Laptop, where as in my “opinion” the Air was priced too high for what it is.

Like I said on a previous post I bought the Neo for the one off times I need a Laptop or more flexibility than my IPad Pro can handle. I’m not spending $1099 on something I know I’ll rarely use day to day. $599 with my education discount is about all any Laptop is worth to me.

Hey I have a the aforementioned refurbed Lenovo Legion gaming laptop and being refurbished saved me a ton of money, so I am glad for these people. 😀 Have done the same with my M1 iPad Pro 12.9". In addition, I buy a lot of used stuff off Swappa--including my Surface Pro 9 which I got years ago (like when it was a few months old) for $600. So am glad people are wasteful, selfishly anyway.

Yeah, from that point of view it does work out, though somewhat selfishly. But understandable!

If you want the absolute best viewing angles you have to get OLED. I was viewing a LG C5 OLED the other day in Costco and it was next to a mini LED TCL and the viewing angle differences were night and day. In this case I would pay extra for that viewing angle on the LG. I've never in my life seen a TV with that good of viewing angles.

No Neo for me, on account of lacking a backlit keyboard, but I am happy for those purchasing one and not returning it.

Apple has neglected the low-cost market for far too many years, and more market share for macOS can only be a good thing while Microsoft tries to push PC users into a Windows AI cloud subscription framework.

It is all assumed in price. Off centre is horrible, but it manages to get 3 people in the center.

I bought 65 inch tcl q7m mini led because it is the cheapest hdr 4k 120 fps compatible tv for xbox/ps.

It is the best TV for 750 i paid for it.

Now LG C4/G4 back then were no brainer better, but similar size were going for 1800+.

It is like comparing neo to mbp 14.

Agree about viewing angles. My wife likes often watches our TV at an angle while sitting on the favorite chair. While the viewing angle may not be important to some of us, it is extremely important to most people. I can understand that if only one person is looking at a photo or drawing displayed in a small screen angle should not be a problem, but if he or she is showing the same photo to a person it becomes more difficult for both of them to look at the photo unless the display can be slightly moved back and forth.

Next time, if you want to visually differentiate your update from the initial post, PLEASE use italic writing or thicken the title or word Update instead of using full caps for an entire paragraph.
THAT JUST MAKES IT HARDER TO READ AND FEWER PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ IT.
You don’t need to yell into people’s eyes.

Apart from that, I understand your reasoning regarding the return.

I would imagine Apple are using multiple suppliers for their panels, there may be better and worse panels that are all considered "within spec". Maybe some have slightly better viewing angles and colour saturation.
That would be a very worthwhile thread to read, if people figure this out. Especially if we could eventually make a good guess based on serial number at the store which one we might end up getting.

Sharing another datapoint: I tried out a Neo in-store yesterday and I didn't notice a problem with fuzzy text. Based on this thread I was expecting to be disappointed but I really just couldn't see it. This is not to say that OP didn't experience it with the unit received and/or he has better eyes than mine (very possible).

I did try adjusting the resolution to one notch less than default (which as I've understood from others should result in sharper text by avoiding non-integer scaling) but didn't see a benefit. I also looked at a nearby MacBook Air M5 and did not find its screen an upgrade (note they were not side-by-side).

The screen is perhaps the most important aspect of a laptop for me and it would have been a dealbreaker for me if the Neo was fuzzy the way I had imagined it. Note I don't do any professional photo, video, or similar work so I am not evaluating it for that. Simply how does it looks on text in a word processor or web browser. I thought the screen on the store's display model was fine for that purpose.

That said, I would spring for a refurb MacBook Air M4 if buying for myself. They aren't (or won't) always be available but in the ~$750 range (can't remember exact figure) they are a great deal.

Last while I hear a lot of comparisons with the MacBook Air M1, note it is unlikely that Apple will support that model for as long even if its performance +/- Neo in many cases. I will be surprised if the MacBook Air M1 is still supported in macOS 28.

P.S.I'll also note the Neo felt lighter than the Air to me when holding in one hand despite their similar weights. I think the weight distribution might be more centered.

Agreed, refurb M4 Air seems like a great sweet spot right now.

I didn’t buy into any ‘hype’. I knew the specs. But having never seen and used the device in person, it’s not possible to know whether something will be good enough or not. I posted days ago that I expected that I might return it.
You did nothing wrong. You did the right thing. Tim Cook is a deceitful man who has made it his mission to cut corners on products in order to maximize profits, so your reasoning and actions, based on a healthy level of skepticism, were rational.

FOMO is real but this could have been worse out side return window. Fully expect some regret posts here when FOMo disappears in few months. Happens after new product launches.
It's a good time to remind people to always check return policies before buying. Some retailers have a 15 day return window, and some have a restocking fee for non-defective returns*.
If you are planning to buy something as a gift or otherwise think you will need a long time to decide, wait until the winter holidays. Besides probably paying a lower price, you will also often get a return window open until mid-January, even if you buy in late November.

*They can't resell it as new, so they lose money unless they return it to Apple, and their negotiated wholesale cost may be at risk if they send back too many as well.
