It is not a bad unit. When I got to the Apple Store I also reviewed their demo units and the screens were the same as my Neo.

It is an objectively inferior screen to the MBA and MBP. It uses a narrower colour spectrum, has a 60 Hz refresh rate… and most importantly, appears to have a delaminated screen. This delamination creates an air gap between the LCD and the front glass. It then traps light and slightly distorts content underneath.

Apple has moved past delaminated screens and when you look at any modern MBA, MBP and iPad Pro, you will see how there is virtually no distortion and the screens are incredibly crisp and clear. This is largely the result of lamination.

I am not saying Neo’s screen is bad, I am saying it is not good enough for me.
Weird. I was trying to think of reasons why your screen would have that issue where letters shifted when you move your eyes and mine doesn’t have it (or any issues really). Oh well, either way too bad it didn’t work out.

Confirmed it'll have Wifi 8, 5G Red Cap, and Satellite too.
Rumoured is also a fold out inflatable life raft but I'm less confident about that one.
Nah, they shelved the inflatable raft because it leaked too much memory, but good news: the next pro-motion will actually refer to the fold out personal helicopter blades that is replacing the raft in the roadmap 😛

That's an exciting development! Thank you! I'm looking forward to that.

Got my Neo today. Put it through some paces, and just got back from the Apple Store to return it.

Why I returned it:
  • The screen size is just a little bit too small for my liking. The 13.6” MBA size is a better size for me. I could sort of live with this, if it wasn’t for:
  • The screen quality is just not good enough for me. Two main issues with it: the viewing angles are noticeably worse than a MBA and MBP screen and the clarity and crispness of the text and graphics is noticeably not as good as a MBA or MBP. Everything looks slightly blurred on screen in comparison to Apple’s Pro devices and even compared to the MBA.
The Neo’s screen made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I can’t go to a screen like that when I use devices like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPad Pro M5, the MacBook Pro M series, and a M3 MacBook Air.

I did side by side comparisons with the same content as well just to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.

Overall really nice device though. Great build quality, nice keyboard and trackpad, decent sounding audio, ran apps well, etc.
To be honest, what I don't understand is why you even considered buying a Neo in the first place, given how many high performing laptops and iPads you have. What possible niche could it have filled?

I am just coming back from the Apple store to try the neo and compare it to the Air. I already have a 15" air but sometimes I would like to have a smaller device for when I don't want to take the bigger air (I have the 12" Macbook but that one is slow and has poor battery life). Don't need to be well specced like my air. The neo could be a possibility. However I was hoping it to be lighter than the air and it is not, as for me it was mainly about portability. Looking at the screen I also noticed it's more reflective than the air, you notice it more if you use dark mode. Otherwise I like the indigo color, the keyboard is fine, the trackpad is great and I love that there is no notch.
Screen reflectivity however is something that bothers me somewhat (I wish Apple offered nanotexture for the air, I don't need a pro and I prefer a lighter device, but I still appreciate the decent antireflective coating in the air), I wonder if when you say you find the screen "washed out" is due to lighting reflections that make it look less vibrant. Other than that personally I am ok with the screen of the neo.

If the screen is bothering you now, right up front, I'd certainly pass.

Hard to get around an issue with the screen .. sort of important on a laptop.

I can understand returning a product where you aren't an experienced user and didn't know the specs ahead of time, not to mention didn't already have computers whereby you could cogently see where the Neo would fall. In my opinion. you don't fall into that category. You got caught up in the hype which can happen to some. And instead of taking a step back and getting some clarity, you dove head first into the hype.

I have also never really understood why so many here feel compelled to constantly tell strangers they returned an item to the store. People don't normally do that kind of thing but, it seems on MR it always has to be a a bigger fanfare than needed.
He did a service to the community and has gifted some lucky one an OPEN BOX priced reduced Neo!

Inferior to what? An AIR is inferior to a MBP if you want to look at that way.

The NEO was designed to be what it is, a lower cost MacBook.

No one is twisting your arm to purchase an “inferior” product. If you don’t like it, don’t buy. Let others make their own decision.
I’ll post and discuss what I decide to on here. Others can use information like mine if they want to help them decide, or not.

I’m not going to repeat what has already been said about why the screen is inferior.

I received my 13” M5 Air and Neo together and set them up side by side. I did not notice a difference as in it looked like 2 normal macbooks. When I found this thread I wanted to confirm regarding the viewing angles this morning and I didn’t see any color shifting or washing out. With cheaper screens you can see the shift right away when you move. Could really be the reflective screen, dunno. For the cost it looks like a screen that belongs to an Apple product. For reference I own an Iphone 17 Pro Max, an Ipad 11th Gen and the OG studio display as well as the aforementioned MBA. Take that as you will.

Ok, I'm heading back by an Apple Store again this afternoon and I need to go pay close attention to this again and compare across models.

Beyond the screen size:

Ports are not even close to Air or MBP.

The display is likely same as Air (I spend 10+ hours per day in front of them so paying extra is well worth ending up with less daily eye strain).

Storage I/O is slow

It is cute with too many limitations and shortcomings, unless you pay for a top-end model which is not far from MBA outlay.

This thread is a perfect example of why I’ve stopped coming here…

Someone makes a post about their experience and their impressions of a device. Cool.

Rather than engage in a conversation about the device, people are telling OP what they should and shouldn’t have done in the first place, and even claiming to know their motivations for doing so.

Self-centred, patronizing, and judgemental.

Is it so hard to just talk about tech?!

Edit: I get the irony, lol

Inferior to what? That question has not been answered. Certainly a M5 Air or MBP screen is better but those devices are not in the same category as the NEO. Other than being MacBook. Compare Apples to Apples. There is no other machine in that price category with a screen that is superior to the NEO. By definition the NEO screen cannot be inferior as there is no other product, by Apple, in the same category. By your logic my MBP screen is inferior to the Studio Display which is inferior to the Studio Display XR.

I have looked at the NEO screen, used the machine, the keyboard, trackpad. Everything worked well and the display was excellent. The screen is no MBP, but neither is the rest of the computer. Especially when price is considered. A super high quality screen would have raised the price and would have defeated the goal of the NEO.

It's not bothering me a lot, just a bit, but again since I have no urgent need I'll probably wait another year (maybe by then I'll find a great offer on a M4/M5 air at little more than the neo) or maybe the neo 2 will be better (although my guess is that Apple will just replace the SOC with an A19 pro and that's it, which is already a decent upgrade).
But I have to be honest, what I am really looking for is an ultraportable Macbook, not necessarily a cheap one, and I would even pay a premium for a MacBook under 1kg (if the neo was that weight I would have already bought it regardless of the screen or other considerations). If a lighter Macbook never materializes I'll end up getting whatever is the lightest one (current either neo or 13.6" Air)

People want the Neo to have all the features of the Air which would just make it an Air LOL. There has to be compromises to hit a lower price point. The fact is even the M1 Air was way overpowered for what most people are using them for outside of people on forums and heavily into tech. The Neo is literally perfect for those those people and with the really high single thread score its going to be snappy where it counts.

I just got an M4 Air and it is a Weapon, I use a Mac Studio at work and I don't feel any difference in the tasks I'm doing at home, the M4 is overpowered even for me and I'm a complete nerd.

They did - at home.

There are so many threads on here about people buying iPhone Pros (much more expensive than Neos, of course) and returning them because they changed their mind about the colour, thought they might have seen a spec of dust on the lens, or swapped between sizes a few times until they decided which one.

But as soon as someone says they bought a Neo, tested it, and returned it, everyone is suddenly worried about Apple's profit margins.

Radio Shack used to be my first stop after paying my paper route bill on saturdays. Taught myself BASIC playing on the TRS-80 Model I. Still remember my first program (paraphrased)
10 PRINT “PBG4 Dude is awesome!!!”;
20 GOTO 10

(The semicolon in line 10 kept the Next print command from forcing a new line.)
Great memories! That was my first computer! I couldn’t type worth **** at first and I remember being up until 4:00am the first night I had it trying out some really basic (no pun intended) stuff. Cool thing for me, as it turned out, I was pretty sure at 4:00am that first night I would be doing some kind of programming for a living. I sort of “outgrew” BASIC pretty early and I remember saving up to buy the “Editor/Assembler” (on cassette LOL!). I remember an early electronics project was building a gadget that connected to the expansion connector on the back and allowed me to connect an Atari 2600 joystick to it so I could use it in my programs. Good times! 😁

I do not like when people abuse the return policy. Hope Apple cracks down on people who abuse it and limit returns
This isn't abuse. This is Apple's return policy working exactly as Apple intended. OP is likely going to buy a more expensive Apple laptop at some future date, and the meantime Apple is still going to sell OP's lightly-used Neo at a small discount and still pull in at least a 20% gross margin on the thing.

Your "hope" that Apple limits returns is pretty irrational. There would be all downside and no benefit to you at all if Apple were to do this. Your concern with Apple's return policy is a waste of your emotional energy. A healthier alternative would be to go to Costco and leer at people taking extra helpings of the free samples.
