You will definitely miss the retina screen. Welcome to the 3GS screen density again in 2012. ;)

Such interesting justifications for wasting money.

That's your opinion. A smaller more portable iPad is definitely worth it. It may not be useful for you but for me, someone who takes their iPad with them at all times it would be excellent to have a smaller more portable one.

The screen density is not 3GS. It is the same res as iPad 2 shrunk down. Also you hold the iPad further away from your eyes than an iPhone so pixels will be less noticeable.

Both iPhone 3GS and iPad mini have a 163ppi pixel density. Of course the color, saturation and contrast will be much better in the iPad mini but the density is the same.

I had a love and hate relationship with my iPad 3 but I figured I hate more things than I love from it

Love
- retina
- battery

Hate
- heavy
- bulky
- uncomfortable
- long charging time
- laggy (pretty often) I read it was because it had to power the high resolution retina display

My dream since I seen the first iPad was a smaller iPad. Lighter. It has now become true. So when people say it is stupid to go from iPad 3 to the mini I think not. Because this depends a lot on what experience the buyer is looking for. I know I'm not the only one doing this. If anyone is wondering I sold my 16GB wifi only (white) on Craigslist for a good $400 today (oct 24)

My iPad mini will be with me everywhere. My iPhone 5 will get less love now. It will be more of a phone now (just for phone calls) and the iPad mini for everything else, coming with me everywhere. Something I could just not do at all with my old bulky heavy FAT iPad 3.

Ugh how much I hated you iPad 3.

Are you getting the wifi only ipad mini or the cellular version? I have been struggling with wether or not to sell my ipad 2 and get the ipad mini. I like the smaller size but worry the screen will be too small. I have been traveling g a lot lately so having the better FaceTime camera is a plus.

IM keeping my Ipad 3 and getting the Mini why you ask becuase I can:cool:

You "can" also put the money you save into a 401(k), but then how would you show off the latest iPad version to complete strangers in office/subway/Starbucks/whatever, whether it's better than the iPad 3 or not?

I'll shut up now...before I get into trouble!

Yeah me too, love the iPad 3 but it's just too big. Too big for bus or plane travel (for me anyway) and yes - too heavy.

Now if only the preorders would go live....

Put money in a 401 K?? wellllll I do that to....Still will keep my Ipad 3 and the Ipad mini. In fact we have 3 ipads in the house along with the Mini now...why you ask?? Why not:cool:

I will be getting the wifi version. I have the 2GB $25 data plan on my iPhone at the moment. I also have a 25% college discount on my AT&T account. So my plan is (since my iPhone is with me all time) to add the $50 5GB data with tethering plan and my 25% discount will lower that to basically $25, so I am not losing anyways. So that works for me. I'll have my iPad with me everywhere and do everything there, also 98% of the people I text have iMessage so texting will be done on the iPad all time. With data at all time from the iPhone 5 in my pocked :D

I looked at a lot of the responses and people seem to confuse the physical size of the pixels with "shrunk down" iPad 2 size.

iPhone 3GS pixel density = ~163 PPI

iPad Mini pixel density ... wait for it = ~163 PPI

The pixel size is roughly the same.

There's no denying that the iPad Mini and the iPad 2 share the same pixel count with a resolution of 1024x768 but putting the same resolution in a smaller form factor isn't the same kind of magic you get with the retina display.

If you think an iPad is heavy, you reeeeeally need to lift some weights. I have never had any trouble with the weight. What is it, maybe 24 ounces? Rest your elbows on the bed or something. I seriously don't think you've found a good way to hold it if you think it's heavy. I do understand complaints about typing on it, but it's not exactly made for that and you can adjust the keyboard. It's a little weird split, but it's an option.

Whats obvious is that you really don't do anything with your ipad....at least anything that lasts more than a few minutes.

There is no good way to hold it.

Some day they will get the regular ipad as light (or lighter) as the mini and you'll be first in line wondering how you ever put up with the iPad's over weight.

People who say the weight is fine...dont do anything substantial with their ipads.

each pixel is smaller... if your eyes are old enough I don't think it will matter anymore :) (just kidding)

Spot on! The screen may be of higher quality but the pixel density is the same. If you think the 3GS screen is grainy, then the iPad mini will be as grainy as that. The color may be more vibrant and the contrast may be better e.g. blacker black. But that's all about it.

Joshua from the verge said the screen looks nice. I trust him.

I bought 2 minis today. I'm getting rid of my ipad 3 once they have a keyboard for the mini similar to the logitech. That keyboard changed my ipad completely.

I want a 3rd mini but they limit to 2. :(

There are exceptions to this argument though. Some of us have arthritis in our hands, have some other disability perhaps, or a repitive type injury that makes grasping something of this weight painful after a little while. I know that likely doesn't apply to the majority, but it's nice that we now have the mini as an option.

Stop telling lies :s

Going from a larger retina display to a smaller screen without retina is like going from blu-ray to vhs.

Thats because Gravity is a constant thus making your blood follow in the same direction. Its like hanging upside down and all the blood rushes to your head. I get this same "arm strain" when holding my phone that way or anything. it doesn't necessarily mean the iPad you have now is heavy or bulky in anyway. Also I'm a 6'3 230lb amateur bodybuilder. I think you'll be ok

Good point and well taken...but that still leaves my two thumb typing, without splitting the keyboard...
