That was a good article and ironic that he posted it today.

Interesting article indeed. Reminds me of the time when I had the Curve. It was my first smartphone that can surf the web and my first time signing up a wireless data plan. But using the browser is a complete nightmare, everything is scrambled and I don't get that surfing experience as I would on a desktop. Out came the iPhone and I was thrilled with Safari. To me, that browser was a big part of why I switched over to the iPhone. I can't justify paying $30-40 per months just to receive emails on my phone. Desktop integration is all a PITA. Had to use one software to install stuff and another to upload music/pics. It was just all over the place. I'm much happier with the iPhone.

Blackberry has its function and it is a better business phone than an iphone, for many reasons, however they are not without their issues. I have 5 cases opened with RIM and that is just the last 2 and a half months. (My company has 17,000 BBs and thats just one country.)

I will cross over to BB if I can IM with Obama.

Funny, I've been a long time BB user (have had three, using 8900 Curve now) and I've been thinking of switching to the iPhone 3GS now that it has MMS and a few other features.

But, it's a difficult choice. I love my physical keyboard of the BB and the many options. But, my father and a few friends have iPhones and I love the UI. Another problem is my BB is with TMO and I only pay about $60 a month for full service. I know the iPhone 3GS will cost me at least $90 or so a month...

If Obama has a BB that is just one more reason I would never get one and why i LOVE my iPhone with all my heart! :D :apple:

Side note: I played with a Pre for the first time yesterday which also has the physical keyboard and it was HORRIBLE! It didn't have intelligent typing at all and the keys are so small it is worthless. I honestly love the onscreen iPhone keyboard and I can type VERY fast on it!

I just have a problem with the abbreviation RIM.

If a known sex act was called an Apple Job, I might also have the same adverse reaction to Apple.

I love how the list of reasons for people switching to another cellphone is continuously shrinking. A few months ago, this list would have been much longer.

Someone give this guy a cookie!

News flash: Nobody gives a crap that you are switching to the black berry cheap plastic junk.

iPhone: Multimedia powerhouse
Blackberry: Plastic Junk for business users

So after a couple weeks of deliberation, yesterday I picked up a used BB Curve 8900, switched over, and retired my iPhone. I was unsure about whether I would be able to adapt after a year on my iPhone, but after just a few hours, I know that I won't be going back. Here's why:

Complete customizability
Every aspect of the BB can be customized to your liking... how many vibrations are given off, font, profiles... part of why I love my Mac is that it is completely customized the way I like it. The iPhone gives only the most basic customization options.

Options for everything
Every conceivable option is available... native support for folders and hiding icons, dealing with messages, etc.

Always-on IM
There really is no match for BBM... every BB user has it, it's always on, there's no service to sign in to... really a genius move by RIM

Fast OS
This might be a product of being jailbroken (which was necessary to get some basic features I required), but this BB is miles faster than my iPhone. No lagging, no stuttering.

Real multitasking
Push notifications were neat, but the BB can do real multitasking. Leave an application running in the background while you check something else.

Better notifications
iPhone's notifications were really lacking... the BB has an LED to show notifications, as well as statusbar icons (something I needed to jailbreak for on the iPhone)

Now, there are some things about the iPhone I will miss...

Seamless syncing with my Mac
I had to use a PC to get my contacts over, and I'm not even going to try moving my calendars over

iPod
'nuff said

Uncrippled wifi
When connected to wifi on the iPhone, every data feature was available... I'm on an unlimited email BB plan (no actual data allotment), and a lot of features are unavailable, which is annoying

So there you go... I had my iPhone for a year, and I really did love it, but the BB is just a powerhorse.

Why do you have to feel the need to justify why you are switching. You could have done this in the secrecy of your own home.. Seems like you are looking for some sort of support or mass aggreement that you made a good choice...Well.. I think you made a mistake. but thats just me.. Cause once you go Mac.. you never go back.. iPhone included..

Like I said earlier, just giving my perspective on the switch - you never know who might come across this and find it helpful. I certainly would have a couple weeks ago.

You really decided to leave the iPhone fast. You used your iPhone for a year, and your Blackberry for a few hours and decided that quickly that you were never coming back? Wow. Guess what, I did the same thing with my MotoQ and I once again own an iPhone. I got my MotoQ and thought it was the greatest thing and that my iPhone was garbage. Well, that didn't last more than a few months. Lets see how long you last.

How anyone used the original MotoQ for more than a few hours amazes me. That phone was just a mess.

Ain't no amount of customizations that will make the UI not fugly.

Once you had OS 6.1 on it which gave threaded SMS and an improved UI, it got more usable. But it still never shook a stick in comparison to the iPhone. I didn't realize how much I liked my iPhone 2G until I didn't have it anymore.

Owned Blackberry's since their original 957 model .... until recently owned the Bold and 8900 Curve, along the way I had an iPhone 3G .... long story short the Blackberry's have been turned off and sold, and my iPhone 3G has turned into a 3GS.

Coincidentally, Blackberry Head Offices are right here in my City, 15 minutes from my house I know a lot of people who work there.... here in my area BB's are easy to find for sale and cheap but I have no interest.

Blackberry advantage, imo, is ONLY the push email and the option to put all your incoming emails into one folder, that's it, iPhone excels everywhere else...

It's much better than any BB ever made for computing purposes, surfing, phone, gaming device, music, movies, app availability and on and on ....

Only if you need/want your email to instantly push into one folder would a BB be worth it in my opinion, with the 3GS here now the BB is far too slow, web surfing sucks, it's hard to hit the buttons just to make a simple phone call, screen is tiny...

The Blackberry is for guys like the old corporate windows dude in the Apple commercials ... :D

I disagree that the superior push is the "only" advantage. As a recent convert to the 3GS (which, on balance, I think was a good move), there are a few other things I miss as well -- custom signatures per account, ability to set it up so that it automatically went to vibrate when in the holster and automatically came out of vibrate when it was taken out of the holster (actually, I got so used to this that I find myself forgetting to put the iphone on vibrate when I need to), superior notification system (light, status bar, etc.), custom tones for email/sms (even custom between accounts), etc.

The list of little convenience features I had gotten used to that are missing from the iPhone kind of go on and on. But, I have to say, that I miss them in the sense that when I realize the iPhone doesn't do it, I say to myself, "doh, that kinda sucks" and move on to all of the other wonderful things it does. So, do I wish the iPhone did all those things in the same way (or as well) as my BB did? Yes. Do I miss those things so much that I'd go back? Not a chance.

Thought I would put my 2pence in on this thread, even tho it is one of a many.

BlackBerry's are obvioulsy aimed at the business market.

That said they provide some good instant messaging integration. There are a couple more that aren't listed there as well.

Over the air software updates are available with 4.5 firmware and above, and weigh in at XXMB, and you don't have to worry about restoring your data, as it doesn't get deleted. Plus the fact it doesn't have to be connected to a computer to update..

Tethering, I was doing that 2 years ago with BlackBerry's, not I just have datacards

Customising a BlackBerry, assuming you aren't a BES user with a security focused IT dept, allows for a good day of playing to get it setup like you want.

Themes, many of them, plus you can create your own.

BBM, everyone slates it, and gives it 'send an SMS or IM', BBM is IM, and it comes out your data bundle, so doesn't really cost anything

Media, I play music on my iPhone, my BlackBerry can do this equally as well. I don't watch Videos on any mobile phone as I find the screen to small. I'll watch videos on my 46" T.V. thanks...

Storage, BlackBerry allows for removable memory cards, that can be encrypted

Third party applications, without the approval process. I had turn by turn maps on the first BlackBerry with integrated GPS, for instance

More than 1 (one) current device...

Push email and PIM without the battery drain

Background apps and notifications is nothing new...

BUT, in mind of all the above, I have both BlackBerry and iPhone.

BlackBerry, then iPhone. Use both at the same time, on corporate and personal networks and enjoy both, but enjoy iPhone more.

I do prefer the iPhone, it is quciker than my Storm (probably not my Bold) and I just like the look and feel of device and UI

Just my opinion

Well said.

I went through a crisis of conscience and bought a Blackberry Curve 2 months ago.

I returned it less than 24 hours later.

And I'm sorry, unless you're work has BES, BB email is pathetic- no folders, and no way to even view emails that don't arrive in your Inbox after you set up email on the device. It was ridiculous. I was expecting some sort of revolutionary email experience and was extremely let down. Maybe I just didn't figure it out, but I found BIS a joke.

I did enjoy the "real" multitasking and the physical keyboard (the main reason I wanted to switch) but it was not nearly enough to make me want to stay. Not to mention what a dog the Curve 8800 is, sloooowwww.

The BB Bold is a beautiful phone though.
