Because it's ugly.

172.gif

It would be hidden under the glass or earpiece grill and would be turned off by default so people who are crazy enough to think it's ugly wouldn't have to deal with it. Including it would simply allow the people that like it and want to turn it on in the settings the option of doing so.

If I recall correctly, Steve Jobs said himself that he hated the LED notification light. Just ruins the look of the phone.

But honestly, I wouldn't mind having a tiny LED light hidden next to the front facing camera. If it wasn't obnoxious, and you could choose different colors, I think it would be pretty cool. I miss the light from my Blackberry.

Yes I know I'm in the minority on this.

I never look at the LEDs on my Android phones, so I don't know why I need one on my iPhone.

While I think a glowing ring around the home button would have looked fantastic (especially if you could customize the color based on the type of notification), it's pretty clear that screen-off notifications will be supplied by the Apple Watch. And I think that is a more elegant solution overall. Of course, you have to like and want the Apple Watch in order for that to be useful to you, and the watch has to have enough battery to keep going throughout a full day of use.

I would also be down for a Moto X style system of notifications. Mayb in iOS 10.

Oh yea, my HTC G2 had a glowing ring around its "home button", and looked great. I suppose Apple could do that. :)

Having a notification LED is nice! I don't get the stigma here. You don't have to check your phone unless you know you've got a message, and conversely, you'll know if you've got an email without having to check your phone. That's nice, when you're expecting something.

Of course, it can also be distracting if you're working or watching TV and the flashing light gets your attention and distracts you for no reason.

My notofications show up on my watch. Don't need a notification light to let me know what kind of message I have. Calls, emails, text, iMessages, other app notifications: my watch notifies me. No need for LEDS.

Before buying this watch I would have had to agree wth you. The flash let everyone know I had a message and didn't really help at all.

Ironic that you call an LED notification light old tech yet wear a watch that has a display that looks like it was ripped right off of a 1996 Palm Pilot.

Mike
I take it you have no idea what epaper is or how it is vastly superior from monochrome lcd screens you were referring to.

This thing lasts a week between charges because of it.

I will never understand, given the variety of ways your iPhone alerts you of messages (and the customization therein), why people are so adamant about a stupid little LED that tells you nothing more than "hey, you've got some type of alert".

Once upon a time the iPhone didn't have a means of letting you deal with notifications you received at a later time, I remember those days and my having to argue for a notification center on these very forums. Folks honestly didn't get it until Apple showed notification center. As it is, my wife doesn't even use a fraction of the features Apple has introduced since the original iPhone. Lots of it is becoming to hard to remember.

I also agree with the posters stating that a smartwatch is a decent compromise to not having to constantly turn your screen on.

Would I like the iPhone to have a notification led? Sure I wouldn't mind it, it would be yet another way to see if anything was missed without turning the display on.

Should Apple do Glance of Active Display? Sure, though I have a hard time believing Apple would switch to AMOLED after all this time. I guess I should prepare myself to be surprised.

Lastly it sure would be nice for the 6s to get that wireless charging setup they are doing for the Watch...

Let's see extra battery life or damn light. Hmm. Battery life please. The light would mean nothing to me anyway. I could care less for it.

OP, why are you so damn stubborn to ask for something that is so 90's? living under the rock for the last decade?

better yet, how about some disco lights around the edge of the iphone? flashing blue, red, yellow whenever there is notification?

Steve Jobs, "No"

A low power LED light will consume less battery than checking your home screen multiple times a day for messages. Plus I'm sure if they did implement an LED light, you would have the option to turn it off.

Omg, this is ridiculous! Some of us would like LED notifications. Geesh. Apple should have that option, turn it off, if you would rather keep checking your phone. So stupid these endless arguments.

Good question.
They certainly have the bezel room for it, don't they?

You sure got that right

Could pretty much fit a cat inside that thing with all the bezel! ;)

I would hate an LED flashing. Sweet mercy. What for???

Someone didn't read the thread ;)

The LED light could be hidden under the glass & turned off by default, so someone like you wouldn't have to worry about it. For the other half of the thread that wants it though at least it would be an option.

I think some kind of unobtrusive LED notification system would be very practical. I had hoped the touch ID sensor would bring something like it. I don't get the hate here.

And a quick annoyance I have: So many posters here claim "it's ugly." THERE IS MORE TO A DEVICE THAN LOOKS! My goodness people! Not everything is pretty. Look at anything "ergonomic" like mice and chairs. They're usually ugly, but very practical. Just like the iPhone antenna lines. Get over it! If it adds useful functionality, I don't care if it isn't gorgeous.

LED light is a no brainer. Blackberry may have fallen behind in the past 5 years.. Or fallen off the map completely but they one thinh they had going in the right direction was the blinking light. I can't understand why Apple refuses to implement ideas that simply work.

Hopefully people read this 1st response on a new page and keep the thread on track

We are talking about an LED light for notifications that would be:
- hidden under the glass or earpiece grill
- turned off by default in the settings

This way, haters can't say "because I don't want something like that" or "it would be ugly" since they wouldn't have to see or deal with it at all and it's only there for the people who want to turn on LED notifications...

I think people have memories of a lone blinking blue or green dot on their phones. If Apple were to include a notification light, it wouldn't look anything like that.

Its a perfectly logical request.

You shouldn't have to pick up and press a button on your phone to see if you've missed something.

It's so simple.

Apple doesn't think enough people need or want an LED notification.

It has nothing to do with stubbornness, it has nothing to do with who's a "fanboy". It's a simple business decision.

Most people don't find a need for it. Those who do are unable to articulate that need in such a way to convince Apple that it's a good business decision.

hint: calling them stubborn or their customers "fanboys" will not help influence them.

That's really the entire story. The end.
