I have a strong suspicion that both the size AND the price play a role here!

Personally, if I had to buy a brand new laptop right now, from what is available at Apple, I would think pretty hard about the 13" uMBP over the 15". Money isn't an issue. I like the size and form factor more than the 15" uMBP.

However . . . that said, I love my pre-unibody 15" MBP Classic most of all. By a large margin. I like the ExpressCard Slot. I like the 400 and 800 FW ports. I like having USB on left AND right sides. I like the front-loading DVD. And I far, far prefer the keyboard and aesthetics of the powerbooks and pre-unibody MBP's to the new stuff. Oh, and I like the matte screen, although I understand that now you can get a matte option. At least I remember hearing that. Anyway, point is, that I would NOT buy a new MBP or MB of any kind at this point, if, God forbid, something terrible happened to my MBP so that it couldn't be repaired, or was stolen or whatever. What I would do is go on ebay and buy another one exactly like it. I bought mine on Oct 6 of 2008, a mere 8 days before the unibody release. And I am so, so glad I did. Although, in hindsight, I realize I could have gotten a somewhat better deal if I'd waited a few weeks. But not by much, as I get a discount for being a staff at Cornell, and I wouldn't have wanted to risk NOT getting this laptop. It's my dream laptop. I wanted it for years. This exact layout. I'm really glad I have it.

Granted, I do prefer the new glass trackpads to the one I have, and I would appreciate a longer battery life! But overall, I prefer what I have. 15" is a bit more trouble to carry, but it's nice to have a larger screen.

Sorry, I'm rambling. Working the graveyard shift. Tired.

Short answer: BOTH price and size contributed to the popularity of the 13" MBP in my opinion.
