I'm beginning to think a lot of people here have abnormally small hands.
These hands will magically grow once Apple releases a bigger iPhone. ;)

You are so right.

And if the iPad ever comes out with a digitizer, Apple will have invented the magical I-pen!!!

Well I am 6 ft tall with normal to small hands and I seem to be able to do it fine?
Maybe you have "small people hands"? there is nothing to be ashamed about that.

This screenshot actually highlights the issue. You aren't supporting the bottom of your device, so you have to push it against your palm to hold it straight up. In that position if you hold it so you you can reach the top, you can no longer reach the bottom.

Your thumb can't reach backwards.

Please, take two pictures back to back, while holding the phone in the same position. One with your thumb touching the top of the screen, then immediately after, without repositioning your grip, with your thumb touching the bottom of the screen.

No, no, no. I am convinced people are being intellectually honest. Therefore, I fully expect a slew of complaints from our fellow Apple fans that Apple has made an egregious mistake now that these users can't reach the top of their iPhones to hit the Back button or pull down the notification menu; and furthermore, I expect them to say that all the benefits of a larger screen are nullified and made utterly irrelevant by their inability to reach the whole screen.

Apple will get an earful, I'm sure!

My Samsung Galaxy Note with the 5.3' screen does not last as long on a battery charge as my iPhone did. I simply carry a spare battery with me and it fits easily in my wallet for those times I need more juice.

Tradeoffs are made every day. A larger screen for me is worth more to me that the "huge" inconvenience of lugging around all this extra stuff such as a spare battery in my wallet..

Do you really care about this? C'mon now. Of course the iPhone is much easier to use with one hand. I don't think anyone is arguing that. The point is that for many, the ability to use the phone "easily and comfortably" with one hand is not paramount. I can actually use my Galaxy Note with 1 hand, but it sure isn't comfortable to do so, and I risk dropping it, but I knew that when I bought it, and for me the phone is a device I look at as well as touch, and I'd rather look at a larger screen, even if it takes both hands to operate it.

Damn that was a long sentence!

Why are other phone screens so big?

Why is quantity better than quality?

And what is the deal with airline food?

exactly...:D

i never really noticed this but when i went to look at some new phones yesterday it dawned on em that the iphones screen is tiny compared to most of the competition

Don't like it, buy something bigger. It really is that simple. The iPhone is still the best selling smartphone on the market by far, so dramatizations like 'tiny' are probably out of place. People like pocketable phones apparently. Who knew..

They can innovate a bigger screen when they can innovate me a larger hand that can still use it one handed and my thumb still reach across to the far corners.
This is the dumbest comment on this board. Unless you are one of the smallest human beings in the world, your hand is plenty big enough to effectively handle a 4.3" inch screen.

That's fine if you don't like Android, it's fine if you love Apple and only want to use the iPhone, but these stupid "my hand isn't big enough" comments have just got to stop, they are laughable. If your hand is really that small, then I feel sorry for your wife or girlfriend because you know what they say about small hands.

Just so I'm clear, someone made the argument that they can do something with their phone, then posted a picture to the contrary. Upon pointing this out, the first response I get it is:

Do you really care about this? C'mon now

I'm trying to have an intellectual debate, and the first response I get is asking me if I care about my argument?

Wow, some people here have really small hands or have no clue how to hold a device. Here is a pic of me with all 4 fingers cradling my 4.3 inch Razr Maxx with my pinky supporting it on the bottom and my thumb easily able to reach the top or bottom of the screen, even the physical buttons below the screen. Had no problems with my SII either and that was 4.5 inch

The iPhone 4S was released over 6 months ago and still has the fastest CPU/GPU of any smartphone to date. Android has yet to release a phone that beats it in any CPU/GPU benchmark.

It is literally the most technically advanced phone on the market.

How does beating another device in a benchmark make it the most technically advanced?

Doesn't have LTE, NFC, the highest ppi screen, USB hosting, barometer, etc.

That's like saying my iPhone is more technically advanced then apollo 13 because it has a faster processor.

It seems much of the arguments here from those who want a bigger phone, turn into name calling or making fun of the other person. Do you have a large Android phone? If so, please participate in my open challenge above.

If you try what is depicted in the photo I posted, and find you cannot reach everything with one hand, you will understand why some people don't want large phones.

Finally someone addresses my question :)

You have proven me wrong. I will note that you had to play the "Balance the phone on 4 fingers" game to reach the bottom, and aren't properly (IMO) supporting the bottom of the phone, but it's definitely possible!

How big is your phone?

I already posted the benchmarks for the Galaxy Nexus beating out the 4s in another thread and the HTC One X with the quad core obliterates the 4s in benchmarks. Google it.

I am supporting the bottom of my Maxx in my pics

Personally, I use an iPhone 4s and Droid Razr Maxx...I like both and I cannot fathom the idea of anyone saying that the 4.5 screen (or whatever it is) of the Razr Maxx is unusable with one hand. It's just ridiculous and baseless. If you truly cannot use a 4.5" screen phone comfortably with one hand, then you have abnormally small hands, period. This is not an opinion, it is fact, the phone is totally useable with one hand that is of average size.

Thanks MrButters, while you may have a little trouble reaching the top right with your thumb, you've clearly shown that its not a big deal.

Again, I stand corrected.

How big is your phone?

Galaxy Nexus 4.6 inch screen.

Also that is my left hand and I am right handed, so in my right hand its even easier to reach the corners as I am more dexterous with my right hand.

You do have to hold larger phones in a slightly different way, but they're very usable with one hand.

You're clutching at straws if youre saying that not being able to hold a larger device in exactly the same way as an iPhone is a problem.

It's just starting to look small now because of all the android phablets that are out now :)

I'd like to keep this thread on topic, especially since this has been discussed many times in other threads here, but the only benchmarks the iPhone 4S has lost in, have been browser javascript benchmarks. There has yet to be an Android phone released that beats it in any CPU/GPU benchmark:

Let's take the discussion to a different thread of you'd like to debate this further.

The galaxy s3 will probably change that. They are usually powerhouses after all. Either way, the galaxy line of phones tend to be very fluid (with the exception of the first galaxy s that had some teething problems).
