Awesome Pic! I honestly have no issue at all with waiting for a jail break to be released...

What I can't stand is all of the people that bitch and moan everyday because they don't have a JB for their phone yet. With all of the complaining and **** talking that comes from impatient idiots, I'm surprised that anyone is even willing to still release a JB...

Just saw this. I can't believe the iPhone 4S has been out for nearly a month and there is still no true untethered jailbreak. What's the hold up?

For all the complaining iPhone fans do about Android fragmentation, Android rooting seems to be a much more universal process than iPhone jailbreaking.

everytime apple comes out with a new ios, they try to fix those bugs that allows jb, just be patient untethered jb will be on its way soon, check out twitter and stuff muscle nerd posts his progress

Rooting and jailbreaking are two totally different beasts:

Rooting an Android phone consists of finding a way around the signed bootrom, then getting around read-only filesystems to install a recovery image which is a necessary step for a custom ROM.

Jailbreaking an iPhone not just requires dealing with a signed bootrom, but building a complete architecture on the device for apps, including the MobileSubstrate, the Debian dpkg install system, Cydia, gpg, libraries. Then the jailbreak code needs to stash apps. While cracking a ROM on an Android device takes a lot of effort, an iPhone requires cracking the ROM, as well as installing a working platform in order to have anything usable at all. On Android, one can have a terminal with a shell that on a non-rooted phone can access everything. On iOS, the app will only see its own file structure, and if it does try to get out of its working directory, Apple will not approve it.

So, I applaud Android developers and the speed of getting roots/custom ROMS out -- it is a lot of hard work. However, iOS takes a lot of work to build on exploits, and has a far smaller JB community.

You think it was announced and no one said anything here? You'll definitely know when it's available.

The problem might be that they are not releasing whatever they have done. If they'd release SOMETHING for other developers to chip in, we would see a faster/better jailbreak.

It doesn't need to be a one click thing like always has been. It could be a complete method and dedicated thing.

For all the fragmentation that Android has, its developers aren't and iphone's are.

You aren't honestly comparing the droid razr to the iphone are you? People want what they can't have. The harder it is to jailbreak the iphone, the greater the interest. Look at the resources apple has and there is your answer...Pay anyone enough and they'll get what you need done.

The moment they released anything, Apple would learn the exploits they're using. Within days they'd have a new iOS version out that patched the holes...and they'd stop signing the old firmware. They can't release anything until it is completed and they have a working path to downgrade.

The Dev Team has proven time and time again that they know what they're doing. They've been responsible and released in ways that guarantee a jailbreak and unlock for as many people as possible. People should stop second-guessing them and learn a little patience.

Yea op, why haven't you released it yet? You've had a month to complete the jailbreak since your original whiny do nothing post in this thread.

Although I think if you can't get it done by someone else you do it yourself, I still feel really bad for the i4S users right now. Honestly if I had to wait this long for a JB, I would have gone to Android a month ago. Even a tethered JB would be totally worth it.

I got several of my i4S friends looking to me for a signal about a jailbreak, and every time I just shrug.

Just hang in there, guys. I'm still certain something will come out of the woodwork eventually. But all this is making me consider not buying an iPhone after my contract runs out next year.

Easy with the sarcasism guys. The OP has brought up a point which in my opinion is fairly justified. He has positioned his question naively though but if you read between the lines; there is a point to be made here.

Dev Team and the other so called iPhone developers have exploits ready. It’s a game they like to play as they are indeed talented to keep all of us holding. Most of us including myself do not have the knowledge as to how they do it which is why we have to wait.

If you think about it, what is so different with the Gevey sim. They came up with the hardware unlock SIM which costs about 10-15usd. If the Sim can have an unlock then whats the hold up with the soft unlock. Its all a $ game. Why would you give out something for free when a good sum of money can be made with a flimsy hardware. You never know Gevey might just be a brain child of someone well known.

A natural soft unlock has not been out in a long time. The last software unlock was during the initial iPhone 4. When the iPhone came out in the early days, it was more like Microsoft Windows. The whole community was into it trying to jailbreak and make it work. Now it just seems like the big boys have lost their drive and there aren’t more talented folks to take it forward.

Don’t you agree?

As I read the question, it addresses jailbreaks.
The majority of your response pertains to unlocks ?
Not sure why ?

The jailbreaks will come once they are complete and tested.
Although your response is much more respectful than the OP's question, the notion that the OP or you have a valid point for criticizing the time factor is foolish given that apparently you nor the OP cannot get it done any faster.

From what I understand, rooting is an exploit-based process like jailbreaking (that is, it relies on a flaw in the system software that can be used to override the phone OS's security protocols). It's a tight line -- whether you jailbreak / root or not, you want a secure phone. So you don't want too many of these loopholes.

In an ideal world Google and Apple would be doing the rooting of their devices for users who wanted the additional flexibility, and no open exploits would be required. Not going to happen, of course. :(

The main difference is that Google generally designs Android so that you do have full root access to the phone. It's the various manufacturers and carriers that implement restrictions. There are a few things going against those manufacturers and carriers for implementing security:
  • They're not as familiar with Android as Apple is with iOS
  • They have to ensure that their modifications don't break compatibility with future Android revisions (and I suspect this is why most phones get the updates pretty late).
  • They don't have as much time to implement security as Apple does
  • If one manufacturer manages to implement extremely tough security, people will simply buy one of the many other Android phones.

I suspect that if they really wanted to, Google could really tighten up the security on Android. But it's not in their best interest - the "openness" is their main selling point over Apple. The fact that 90% of their users wouldn't benefit from an open system is pretty irrelevant.

It's completed, they are just not telling anyone.

There won't be a 4S jailbreak until at least after iOS 5.1 comes out.

Maybe. Thats what I miss about Geohot. No waiting...just release the jailbreak.

Note: I don't think there is a completed jailbreak. Hopefully pod2g can figure something out.

This might be the dumbest comment in the thread. Are you suggesting that the only reason you bought an iPhone is because you thought you'd be able to jailbreak it? And you would switch to Android just because you could root it?

All I can say is WOW and shake my head, dumbfounded I am!!!

Thanks, guy. :) You misunderstood me and I don't care to explain myself any more. Go roll eyes somewhere else.

Honestly I'm kind of with him. I am more patient than to switch after a month, but if the dev-team quit altogether, I'd probably leave Apple.

if you care so much get of your ass and do it yourself. you should be thankful people are willing to spend their time to help you, and its all free.
